What a cup run from Coventry. Dave Bennett absolute class, silky skills and the ability to run all day. Great memories for me as as 10 year old footballing nut
I never knew David Rennie played for Leeds. As we all know he went on to play for the Sky Blues in the mid 90s and was often praised by Big Ron when he first arrived along with Borrows for their consistency at the back. By that point Borrows was the only surviving outfield player left from this F.A cup winning year and Big Ron was way off point as our defence was a laughing stock under his management. Thanks for the upload and I feel these days are just round the corner. Jordan & Robins Glory Days coming soon 🙌
I was there - what a year, so close yet so far. Play-off final defeat to Charlton to follow - Bremner was sacked the year after, went to Doncaster, sacked from there, then died… in a parallel universe there was no Bennet and Shirtliffe and Bremner went on to win the world cup with Scotland…
Houchen was a real talisman in Coventry's cup run that season. Things just seem to fall for him and scored a great goal in the final. Coventry's name was on the cup that season.
Easy to look back & say that. But it's true, there was a feeling in the city and the team. My mob found out, 9 months before, we had a family gathering in Scotland on the FA Cup final day. We (mostly) did the right thing by the family. I have no regrets, I'd rather I missed the game and we won. And we did !
I loved the final, but this semi was the greatest game i ever went to..sad to say this now but Hillsbrough on a semi final was the most amzaing experience i have ever witnessed.

Can't believe how many opportunities Cyrille Regis squandered. Thank God we had Dave Bennett.
Bennett was a wizard, but Regis was a defensive wrecking ball. It was an amazing year, the team and city seemed to think 'this was our year'. My family had a big gathering on FA Cup day. As soon as we saw the dates it was 'I bet we get to the Finals'. We (mostly) did right by the family, no regrets, I'd rather not be there and the Sky Blues to win..... superstition ! The Final wasn't on TV in Scotland, but we got a radio and listened in.
I was 8yo at this Match, Sat in the Leppings upper with my Mum, Nan & rest of Griffin Branch, Terrifying seeing Dad, Uncle, Cousins & friends in the Crush below, They looked better when they got back from Orgreave than after this
Ohh mate i was there aswell but i wss 9 haha my uncle was from coventry amd moved to scotland , he took me to games at highfield road an shit ,wonderful days .
I saw his first game at Anfield, I think it was against Leeds. He was a very good goalkeeper and I remember that we all loved him but there were never going to be too many openings at Liverpool when Ray Clemence was there. What a game he had in this match.
@@CB-xr1eg Only because the police delayed the kick off for 20 minutes. My brother who was in the leppings lane end nearly died through lack of oxygen. It was utter madness. Sadly an accident waiting to happen.RIP the 96. LUFC.
@@assassinsunite3434 im 43 now and havent been to see the sky bkues in fuckin years as i said before , only home games ive been to was at highfield road !! ✌ill need to get back down ..i stay 7 miles from celtic park and ive been to more coventry games thanks to my uncle..i was at hillsbrugh for leeds v the mighty sky blues ..
@@assassinsunite3434 first game i went to i was 6 years old it was against birmingham and my aunties relatives from coventry worked there and i got to go into dressing room to meet big cyrille and dave bennet aand the rest of the team only time ive been awe struck hahaha , 😁
I stood in Leppings Lane end that day. Not fun. Ask anyone who stood in that end at an FA Cup semi. Look at the space the Coventry fans had at the other end
I was at the Cov end, I remember being packed in like a sardine. But I agree it looks like we had more space. But before and after the game it was a good idea to avoid the Leeds fans, and I wasn't a little bloke.
@@jcoker423 I was there that day and yes Coventry fans were packed in like sardines I' remember there was more Coventry fans than Leeds fans That day Coventry were allocated more tickets
@@robwozencroft8684 Ay as I wrote 'looks like we had more space'. It really does like like we had more space, but I doubt we did. But as you say below, 'Good times great player great year'. PUSB.
@@jcoker423 You had miles more space, the pictures don't lie. The mind can play tricks, and your mate claiming there were more Coventry fans, the pictures don't lie, neither does the audio. Leeds were and are a much bigger club.
One of the great Semi Finals.Ogrizivic played the game of his life otherwise game would have been over at half time.As a Leeds fan I am gutted we lost this game.Ormsby’s mistake changed the game. Some Years your name is on the cup.It certainly was Coventry’s year.Houchen’s header in the Cup final one of the best ever
The joy of winning a semi and thinking "we're going to Wembley!" as opposed to being already at Wembley and thinking "fucking hell we've got to traipse all the way back down here again...wonder if I can get a loan?"
+Nick Nick - Just been reading about it in the Hillsborough news reports. The BBC report has a quote from a Leeds Utd fan who was in the middle pen that day and stated that it was so tighly packed he couldn't even clap his hands.
+bigby1976 I was in the Leppings Lane end for this game it was packed solid but we were evenly spread along the whole terrace. When you look at the footage I can honestly say I think there were more Leeds fans in that end in 1987 than there were Liverpool fans two years later. The crowd swayed back and forth all game but it never felt dangerous it was just a great cup tie atmosphere
"The number of Liverpool fans in the Leppings Lane terrace, didn't exceed its stated capacity." I think the lad's point of view was that it was still way too overcrowded, mate, regardless of stated capacity if there wasn't enough room to clap yer hands, eh?
This letter is from a United fan regarding the 1970 Semi-Final at Hillsborough between us and Leeds: hillsborough.independent.gov.uk/repository/docs/SYP000019300001.pdf
Yeah packing 10000 millwall fans in an end with a capacity of i think about 8000 was a complete joke. Then they wondered why they were frustrated. I don't condone a lot of the violence but some of that was a backlash about being put in a dangerous situation. Lucky there wasn't a fence up at leppings lane when we played derby in '76.
I've read a lot of the independent report various witness statements and letters from fans and the like and it all points to one thing: That a disaster was waiting to happen there it just needed the wrong set of circumstances. I stood there myself before that watching United and it was uncomfortable. At least before penning was introduced you could move the width of the terrace.
That penning was introduced because it was supposedly making the ground safer. I'm unsure about the logic behind that. That Hillsborough archive that I've linked up is very interesting. There's even some correspondence from United regarding a crush at OT when we played Villa in 1988: hillsborough.independent.gov.uk/repository/docs/FFA000003370001.pdf
Is that commentator a Leeds fan or what? Goes mad for Leeds' goals, especially the second, but all miserable and restrained for city's goals! Oh well we won
the press at the time portrayed Leeds as heroic underdogs, there was a lot of sympathy for Leeds by the time they reached the semi final because they had been written off in every round
Yes the leeds defence was all over the place. They could have clared their lines but keaped missing it up. It looks like we'll be seeing Hillsborough again next year in the 2022 Championship the way leeds are playing at the moment.
