Here is another covered porch that is causing damage to the house.
* Definitely not OSHA approved way of taking it down. This is not safe for most people. I gave a couple of tips on this video for why many of these porches fail, then knock it down. But the knocking down is more for entertainment then it is a "how to".

Dealing with something like this now. Have an open pergola thing attached to the house that’s framed with 4x8s and a 4x12 lumber. Worried about the wood piece that’s connected to the house as the house was painted around it and the patio sliding glass door is built into it. If I remove that I will have an open top sliding glass door for the horizontal end pieces and a strip that has 30 year old non matching paint. Place was first my grandparents then my moms and now ours.

Thanks for this video! We'd like to remove a back patio cover similar to this. What kind of cutting device would you recommend to cut through the 2x4's?

First of all I want you to know this wasn't the safest "how to video" out there. I did it more for entertainment value. But, if you are serious about getting rid of an old covered porch then I would recommend a good demolition blade for a reciprocating saw like this. www.amazon.com/Freud-DS0909CGP3-Carbide-General-Reciprocating/dp/B073WM8WHX/ref=as_li_ss_tl?crid=37QPV40ZJPUQU&dchild=1&keywords=reciprocating+saw+demolition+blades&qid=1590200261&sprefix=reciprocating+saw+demolition+blades,aps,195&sr=8-5&linkCode=ll1&tag=greatwhitenin-20&linkId=7f587c6456a464b4d29b6be02b28ac22&language=en_US

Nice Video! I have almost the exact same problem on a rental property we just acquired; did you have to replace any of the siding due to water damage?
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 9 лет назад
I had some facia and soffit repairs to do. There was also a little damage in the wall itself, but no damage to the siding.

Do you have any suggestions or good examples of these kinds of roofs done correctly? I have a similar roof, causing similar problems, over a screened porch. We want to keep our screened porch, but have to replace the old roof to it. How it was connected to the 'awning' over the sliding glass doors has caused leaks.

P Swish thank you for your question. This is a very old video of mine, one of the first ones. Even though it is old, it does address a problem that many people face. I will be honest, I am not an expert on roofs. Though I can see a problem pretty quick. To give a general example of an add on that I do like is one that is not attached. Making the covered porch a completely stand alone structure where the roof has a clear separation for the home's roof. I know that attaching it to the existing house roof is an easy way to make the covered porch roof steady. But therein lies the problem. Without being an experienced quality roofer I can't tell you how to tie it in without the possibility of damage. So the safe way is not attach it at all and just make sure to give the proper cross support to the covered porch structure. I hope that answer helps.

Hello I am getting ready to tear down my back porch..it has an aluminum roof and Aluminum where the 2x4s are in this roof... if I tear it completely down can I make it into a living space? With new wooden roof with shingles, drywall, siding and insulation?? I just don't want this problem

First, thanks for watching and for your question. This is a very old video and the way I take it down is not for everyone. But it does address a problem with a lot of rotten old covered porches. Ok, your question is actually quite complex. So a simple answer is yes with a big but - and I can not lie. Sorry, had to do that. Now, depending on your home, the height and slope of your roof and a few other things makes this easier or harder. Ok, now that doesn't answer your question yet, I'm just stating that there are a lot of variables in play that can make this a good option or one that will always give you troubles. And that is something that I can't answer. You need the word of an experienced builder that can give you an objective opinion of your project. I understand that is not something easy to come by. If the roof of the add on is not tied in correctly, then it will give you never ending problems. Unfortunately in my experience I have come across more people that have had problems then not. It can be done, but not just by someone who is like, sure I can do that. And I wouldn't just get on Facebook and say I need a "Licensed Contractor". Depending on where you live that may not even come into play. You need an experienced contractor with good references from people that have had this done successfully. Sometimes going to a local company with a storefront is good and sometimes not. So, don't let that sell you on your builder. Some of this work will be sub-contracted out if not all of it. Make sure you know who will be doing the different stages and that the person that you are hiring will be taking responsibility for each part. On one of my early flip houses, my partner and I hired out an exterior company that had a small storefront to replace the old damaged soffit, facia, and gutters. Long story short they subbed out the gutter work and it was done incorrectly. I mean, really incorrectly. When I called the owner and the person that I talked with and paid first told me that there was a storm earlier that week and it was probably the reason for the gutter problem and wasn't his fault. I told him the storm did not install the gutters wrong. Can't believe I had to do that. Then I was told that they don't handle gutters in house and that I would need to contact the gutter people myself. I had quite the argument having to remind him that I paid him and his company for the job. It wasn't my job to hunt down the separate people that he had hired. I hope this information helps you out. Feel free to ask more questions. 👍 So glad to help! Thank you for watching. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org

How do you demolish an unsafe porch attached to the house?
