What a great idea! Thanks for sharing. Animals do not want to eat black hay that has been sitting directly on the ground.I hope a lot of people start storing hay properly. It only makes sense. Hay prices are always going up.

We like to use big truck tires to set hay on . Here in NC we can get old tires for about .50 to 1.00 each . They will last forever.😊

Tom, that’s a damn fine idea! Thanks for sending us a message and thanks for watching our videos. We have a large semi tire shop about 6 miles from our home. I will be looking into this. Thanks again!

Thank you for this video. It appears that your bales are 60” both in height and length. I can only bale 4x5 bales with what I have. Would you Therese suggest the 5x7 tarps? Thanks!

Great video. Thank you. What about stacking them?
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms 3 года назад
Hello Ryan and thank you for watching our videos! Stacking can be a great way to save on real estate when it comes to storing round bales. There are a few points we would like you to consider before stacking. First, it may be difficult for you to stack bales without the proper equipment. Secondly, depending on the compactness of your bales, they may settle and crush over time if stacked. Lastly, most of these bales are over 1k pounds and have the ability to damage equipment and personnel if not handled correctly. If you have a farm where children might be present, consider keeping all your bales on the ground where they pose less of a risk to your little adventurers.

if you have a shed you can store stack them on their sides 2 or 3 high depending on your equipment handling ability.

Great way to do it, I'll be trying this method. Question, for feeding goats/sheep/horses/donkeys, where the bale will last several weeks, have any good inexpensive suggestions for how to cover when being fed?
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms 11 месяцев назад
Unfortunately, no. There are plenty of expensive ways to do it but I have yet to find any reasonable cost alternatives.

Great idea this. Are you using shepherds hook type tent stakes? How long are they?
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms 11 месяцев назад
Yes. We are using those stakes and they are standard size, which is about 4-6 inches.

Do you get any mold at all this way? I really appreciate your post and went out to buy a bunch of tarps but I'm feeding horses not goats. I was thinking about putting a layer of plastic under my tarp just as Extra Protection

Hello! Thanks for the question. We feel your concern. Sheep and mold is basically asking for death. We have not had any issues. So long as they are dry when you cover them, and are up on pallets, you will be ok. As I’m sure you know, bales go through a sweat when they are first made (usually). I would personally not cover your bales for a week after being made (if you can reasonably do so) to prevent trapping any of this moisture under the tarps. We really like this “half tarping” because it allows a lot of air flow yet prevents rain from soaking into the bales. Let us know how your experience is. Thanks! Tim

great video. i just tried implementing this and even with a mallet i could not get the tent stakes to stick into the bale. did you have any trouble with yours? any thoughts or solutions?
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms Год назад
Some times we have to find a sweet spot for the stakes or adjust the angles. It’s amazing how hard they are to drive in. We use a solid plastic dead blow mallet, which seems to work well.

What about in parts of the country where it snows and we get two to three feet of snow would you use the same method?
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms 10 месяцев назад
We get snow and freezing rain here in Indiana. You will get some residual loss around the bottom.
@heatherblomgren8531

Do you get snow? I’m wondering how the bales would fair if you had snow blow around them?
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms Год назад
Hello, Heather. We are in NW Indiana. We get 3-4 bad snow storms per year. We also get 1-2 ice storms. You’re going to get about the same amount of exposure as you would with rain. We keep the bales up on pallets and top covered so they don’t get soaked. People underestimate air flow and think the bales are better to be covered up tight. Sometimes people see wrapped bales of silage or haylage and think that it’s hay… it’s not. If you wrap dry hay bales too tight, you set yourself up for condensation. This leads to mold. You have to find a happy medium. Long term storage is another issue. Get what you need for the season and use it as soon as possible. Our goal is to run out of hay by the end of winter. Mice and other critters are always looking for a place to set up camp. Our method isn’t perfect but when you compare the cost of long bale covers which are a pain to deal with and keep tied down, you’ll see the benefit. We’ve been using this method for about 3 years now and have never lost a bale to mold or spoilage. We hope it works for you! Thanks for watching our videos and thanks for the question.

Can you tarp them standing upright in snow
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms Год назад
I would not store bales upright unless they are in a covered structure. The way bales are made, they will naturally repel water when on their side. If they become wet when stood on end, they will hold moisture and mold. Even a small hole in your tarp could lead to a significant amount of damage.

Does it protect whole bale from rain?
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms Год назад
For the most part it does a great job. The rain that hits the top just rolls off the sides. The uncovered portions along the bottom side allow the bales to breathe and we have had far better results coving this way when compared to when we used to cover the entire bale. This way prevents air trapping, moisture trapping, and condensation. The covering on the top regents rain from soaking into the bales. 👍🏻

How long can you keep bales like this without spoilage?
@LinessaFarms
@LinessaFarms Год назад
If you can keep them dry, you can store them indefinitely. Nutritional value will continue to degrade over time as the sugars in the plant material degrade into starches and then the starches will eventually break down as well. I would personally not count on much good nutritional value after a few years.

We purchase our tarps at Walmart for about $5 a tarp. Assuming your dad invented tarps, I suppose I’m paying him however much Walmart pays him minus their cut from the $5.

We use 8x10 but you may need larger depending on the size of your round bales. We are using 1k pound round bales.
