Some tips and tricks to build a fully concealed covert/low-vis comm setup and use your Baofeng UV-5R or other similar radio undercover. There's a lot of reasons why someone might want to run a concealed comm setup, from professional event security, to private security contracting, executive protection, or just carrying gear in a non-permissive environment.
If you have employed covert comms, I want to hear about it in the comments, so drop a comment below and tell me about your experience!

This is a fairly big set up for “low vis” normally we use a radio in the back pocket or on our belts, the PTT is either remote (wireless) or tucked in our sleeve, headsets were wireless as well. Edit: for my budget guys, there are Bluetooth plug ins for more discreet setups- downside if people are close by, you could be picked up by them if someone’s doing counter surveillance but if you’re running a baofeng for major covert ops then you’re already compromised from the get go, there’s also inductive headsets for really low key

Ran across this recently. I have most of the same equipment you list here. I'd recommend ditching the apple headphones though for just a pair of Samsung or generics. No matter what it is, the blinding white of Apples stuff draws the eye. Even better would be if you can use a Bluetooth headset, although then you run the risk of someone interrupting the Bluetooth signal. Also, for the radio antenna. You could use a longer antenna if you used a cable to extend it. you could run it up the front or rear strap of the ready rig. Love seeing vid's like this. Always bring a few good ideas to make things better.

Found this as a suggested video. Excellent content. I've been a sub to the channel, but missed this since I'm recently subbed. I have almost this exact setup and use the D878 with AES256, same parts and chest rig too. Basically this validated everything I've been doing.

Using a smartphone at all completely invalidates the point of encryption. The military uses smartphones, but they are purpose made and mostly gutted out to make them not the weak link in using the radio for transmission.

Check out the Sonim XP10 that pairs up nicely with the Go Tenna. You can run everything off of that with the PTT built into the phone. So you can bluetooth your audio and then attach your PTT button to the side of the phone. You can also encrypt all the transmissions. Great video... gave me some more ideas. Much appreciated.

You could always use a flexible SignalStick antenna and get max performance out of your Baofeng. Signal Stuff makes good antennas for HTs that you could hide pretty easily.

How well do you find that stubby antenna to work? I've heard they basically don't work. I currently have a telescoping antenna for my lowvis kit because when when folded it's at least 4.5in and gets decent gain, but can be extended if needed. I think the Unobtanium Gear Dank Robber is honestly better than the Spiritus Bank Robber for the features you get, but especially the LV (low vis) split front version. I'd love to see more kit from Covert Arms reviewed and more stuff on covert comms
@MojaveRepeater

The stubby is okay. This one is actually not too bad especially in close proximity to teammates. I've heard great things about the Dank Robber and some friends also run that kit! I'll definitely do some more covert comms content in the future

That stubby's inefficiency limits your range, but also your risk of interception. Your radio is small, but a TinySA is smaller.

@ireilly2000
@ireilly2000 2 года назад
Not sure what connector your Hytera uses, but I’ll bet a bluetooth PTT adapter exists. The added benefit of some noise cancelling earbuds is useful in this application. I use this with my Yaesu- PRYME BLU Bluetooth Adapter for Vertex / Yaesu x42 Screw In Connector.

@@MojaveRepeater even better! I’m definitely in that “intermediate” category, so I haven’t graduated to DMR and 256-bit encryption capable HTs yet, but I’m sure yours have lots of useful features used with some earbuds. Again, great channel! So needed in this community.

I had that issue too, you gotta keep the volume super low and use the 3.5 female to 3.5 male short cord that comes with the earpiece adapter, but it works. If you get a volume lock piece it’ll keep the volume from bumping up higher inadvertently.

Fatal-ish flaw of GMRS Licenses... They leave it up to you, independently, to protect yourself from uhf rf radiation. The shorter ribs at the top of chest, and collarbone, can get very close to resonance, and may not cause pain, but rf and any water molecules is the two bit formula of a microwave's ability to cook food. Not talking down to anybody, just looking out for other enthusiasts. No bones in legs are resonant, unless you are very short in stature, just imagine a 1/4 wave, per frequency (150mhz 1.5'/450mhz .5') and keep antenna away from that. Skull and Pelvis have several loops, and are best avoided. 👍
@MojaveRepeater
@MojaveRepeater Год назад
Definitely something you should consider but RF emits only non-ionizing radiation. While microwaves have the ability to heat water molecules, VHF/UHF does not typically exhibit this property at the power outputs we utilize in communications. Thank you for your feedback!
@whoaedgy7345
@whoaedgy7345 Год назад
@@MojaveRepeater I have never heard of the ionization factor, and a walkie talkie will not cook ramen noodles, but I mean more as a cummulative thing, for security, municipal, ect staff that run on-person radios, for their shift or missions, over span of employment. I will look into the ionizing type rf theory.
