Welcome to the first hour of our livestream! Rodney Mohr is making a Violin Bow over the course of this week while Ohio is under a "Stay-at-Home" Order. The proceeds of the sale of this bow will go to Samaritan's Purse International Disaster Relief. Samaritan's Purse are hard at work helping victims of the Coronavirus in Cremona, Italy, historic home of the violin. They have also deployed another mobile field hospital in New York City to aid the overwhelmed hospital systems. Please help support their relief efforts by visiting their website: www.samaritans...
Jake Brillhart is making a violin live on Facebook. He is raffling off the instrument he is making and all of the proceeds will be going to help musicians that have lost their income due to canceled gigs. Check out his Facebook page / violinbuildingmusicianaid

Now 2022 covid still present , if only you guys knew how it was going spread back then , here in Australia it’s gaining more rapid then before , things are much more relaxed now though and can travel , a Lot more freedom, makes you wonder why we all had lock downs and people lost there jobs, their homes and so on , anyway enjoying your videos on Bow making for violins etc , I was thinking this is as intricate as making fly rods , very detailed and weighted for balance and so on , liked and subscribed will follow all your other videos , thank you both for sharing a fabulous video. 👍

I adjusted a bow using electric heat lamps and wedges on a board to get the shape. Let it all cool down before releasing . I got told off for that . But it worked .

What ever works for you. You just want to make sure that the camber matches your graduations in the finished bow, this will help it pull an even sound and so the player can keep an even pressure as they pull the bow along the strings.

Hello. Instead of silk, could I use polyamide threads? is there any objection?
@RodneyDMohr

The important part of the material is that it doesn’t stretch. Bead cord for making necklaces is perfect. Nylon or silk.

Great, thank you so much to Share your wisdom☀️ You use a lot this large plane 9 1/2 Is it the most useful way?
@LearningTradeSecrets

Use the biggest tool to remove the most amount of material. We like the Stanley 9 1/2 because it has an adjustable throat. Pernambuco likes to tear so having a small opener opening for the blade prevents the wood from tearing as much. And of course really sharp blades help make things easier as well.

Thank you for your answer. A lot of makers use this stanley plane. I discovered that some others use a lie nielsen low angle... Best regards David

Very sad that so much Pernambuco wood was used for Railway Sleepers .
@LearningTradeSecrets
@LearningTradeSecrets 3 года назад
Pernambuco was once a lot more prevelant. It was also ideal for railways because of how dense it is and that most bugs didn't want to have anything to do with it. Thankfully it's not being used for that anymore and because of it's desirable properties it is still useable today after so many years of supporting trains.

Where did you get your head template?
@LearningTradeSecrets
@LearningTradeSecrets 3 года назад
Rodney designed his own head shape out of a thin piece of walnut. It was developed through studying classical bow makers such as tourte. You can easily make your own by making an accurate sized copy of a head profile you like from the many bow reference books out there. Laminate it or use packing tape on both sides of the paper and cut it out with some fine scissors making sure not to remove the image or leave too much of the background. And there you go, you've got a head template of which ever bow you want to make. You can find lots of fine bow reference books at holfter.com/
