Thank you for having the patience and taking the time to ensure those babies bond with a ‘mom’. You give me courage to emulate your practices. God bless.

That’s actually my favorite crossbreed. Half Holstein, half Hereford, F1. The heifers make awesome cows! My Grandpa did that with his milking herd. The heifer calves he kept as replacements were all culled when they were about 20 years old. They can last for a long time.

Great to know! Not many people around here keep them as cows so that’s good to know (if she has a heifer next year). I’ve got one of these crosses that is older and about to be bred for the first time so we will have to see how she preforms!

Farmers are Heroes! (and Heroines) A thankless job. A Dirty Job that takes both hard work and mental discipline! I'm no Farmer, but I know for a fact that if you're raising livestock.. You're usually up, dressed and I'm that barn doing stuff at 04:30 im.the morning.. Maybe by 07:30 or 08:00 you can stop to get some breakfast and coffee!! You Young Kids(like our Host here) who've taken up Farming are just Amazing! Whatcha got there?? A nice looking Holstein Bobby.Calf, eh? His crown definitely indicates some Herford DNA!!

Tie the hind legs of the nurse cow (loosely) while the calf is suckling, to avoid the nurse cow kicking the calf. This is how they do it in India. I saw them on RU-vid. Give the nurse cow grain to sweeten her suckling experience when she accepts the calf. This will encourage and train her to be a good nurse cow.

Dairy cows are usually pretty easy to graft another calf on her. Jersey cows usually will take any calf. They are by far the best nurse cows. My last cow that I raised calves on would not allow the other calves to nurse unless her calf was also nursing and she was half Holstein and half Jersey. I milked her by hand her first year but she gave to much milk. So I made butter and cheese plus fattened out two pigs the whole time her calf got all the milk he wanted. 2nd year I bought two more calves to put on her and after that I sold her

I do the same thing but I usually keep the 2 calves in a small pen together and the cow on her own and let the calves in twice a day for a few days and either the smell of the two calves gets mixed up or the foster calf learns to drink when the real calf drinks 👍
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 4 года назад
We have thought about separating them and letting them nurse twice a day but we have found that we don’t tend to have enough time to mess with it. Once the cow gets attached to both calves we will let them out onto pasture and she will do the rest from there. Thanks for watching!

Why is it called adoption if it’s forced
@MyBelgianAzzy
@MyBelgianAzzy 4 года назад
I mean technically I believe this process is called "grafting" a calf...
@lilmizzconteh
@lilmizzconteh 3 года назад
Deb T I understand that but it’s most of the time not voluntary. And not all accept the calf after this forced adoption. She learns that either feed the calf or be forced to. The word we used to use was grafting, we only used adoption when it was voluntary and no force needed.

Take some of her milk and smear it on his face. Then he will smell more like her. Hopefully she'll be more accepting. I've done this with sheep and it does work. Best of luck to you.

Normally we don’t have much trouble getting her to take calves. A max of 3 days and she normally takes them in and lets them suck out in the field. I’ll have to try that method if we have a beef cow that won’t accept one! Thanks for the advice!

Adopts a 2nd Calf??? Or, gets one 'Transplanted' onto her , successfully?? 😉😉😂
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 4 года назад
I guess you are right, it is more like a transplant 😂 but here in a day or two she will claim the calf like her own. Already on day two and she lets him suck without grain!

Normally we do not have any bad weather until February. By then these little guys will have a big fur coat and some fat to keep them warm. 🤞

Of course, I yield to your farming expertise and farm life experience. I know they don’t need to be treated like house pets, but just so they’re out of any harsh wind and precipitation. Thanks for replying as well as the ❤️. Viewing your digital productions is always something to which I look forward to seeing.

i knew it, i guessed correct that your breeding video would do good, i see it has 350,000+ viewa and counting, this one video will buy u your NEW truck and maybe even more. Too bad that u did not think of making a part 2,3,4 of breeding, dam i would have been sitting in the fields watching the cattle 24/7 for new action, but u lost out on that chance,maybe next year but i don't think any future breeding vids will match this first one. u may have lost your chance. seeing others whom did super good on their first then tryed it a year later got lots lower views. Glad its getting up in numbers , maybe u can repost something that refers to that video to get even more view, u gotta u gotta keep milking it for as long as u can, unless of corse ur not interested in a new truck++. good luck and get that cam working. and YES i really believe that video will buy u a new truck.

I think it's funny when beef farmers say things like "with that big of an udder, she can feed more calves". Please listen carefully SIZE DOESNT MATTER!!! We've had old saggy bags that give barely enough for their calf & fresh heifer with an udder that would only fill two hands feed four calves.. The udder isnt a holding tank! It is where all the valuables come into to go out through the teats. How do you feel about the green hay netting ? Perfume up her nose & on calf butts has had some success if she is too crotchety
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 4 года назад
Yes, I realize just because she has a big udder doesn’t mean she has a lot of milk. However, we know she produces plenty of milk for at least 2 calves and possibly 3 based on previous years. Last year with 2 calves on her, she still had milk running out on the ground! As she gets old we may have to adjust based on how much she is producing. I like the green netting just based on the fact that it keeps more moisture out of a bale and keeps it tighter, but just like twine, I hate the fact that we don’t have any where to recycle it. Hopefully one day someone will come up with a solution for that. Have a good one!

@ka6148

He doesn't He raises the to size
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 4 года назад
No, we do not ever sell to veal markets. All calves on the property are weaned and raised to at least 600lbs before sold. 👍
@Hyperjohn78
@Hyperjohn78 4 года назад
So u are willing to lose money... Most large farms state they slaughter bobby calves when they are days old since they are waste products of the dairy industry. Most of them say male dairy calves are not worth any money.
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 4 года назад
Yes I understand selling as veal can bring good money but in my area no one buys them for that reason. Since these are all beef x dairy cross calves, they still have some value as beef animals. If they were straight dairy calves, veal might make more money sense, but since they have beef in them it makes more money for us to grow them out. My area isn’t a popular area for dairies anymore so most veal buyers have better places to buy.
