I’ve seen their bells but never heard them. Have to check them out at some point as well. Doesn’t the same person make estuches? Not sure if that is the same company. Thanks for the comment Eduardo! Un abrazo

I enjoyed every single cowbell that was played. I think it really comes down to personal preference of which cowbell to use on a song. Awesome video ‼️

I like JCR (Medium-Low) and Mostly like LP Low Tone- ES-9. I have Colombian bells medium and high pitch that I use often. I also have a Toca Bell Medium pitch. Now just bought the LP ES-15 which I did not like so much. So I'm going to sell it. I'm interested in a low-low pitch if its even possible. But I can do with low pitch ES-9. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and well play.

Good job comparing apples to apples and muffling the JCR like that 👍👍 unreal

I didn’t muffle the JCR. Just the natural tone, didn’t do any EQ or anything. That bell doesn’t have a ton of overtone anyway.

I appreciate you played them consistently. For my personal taste, I preferred the JCR and the LP from your group. Def check out PL Benchmark; I have one of his Mid pitch bells. Difference in types of beaters would be another interesting comparison vid. 👍🏻

You’re welcome! JCR is a classic forever, love that LP bell too. Pete makes great stuff, I have to get one from him. Great suggestion btw! 👍🏼 I’ll consider it for a future videos, have to buy more beaters!

All sound great… I am surprised at how, for lack of reasonably-priced availability of Cali’s bells, the LP bell is close enough.

Hey Ernesto, thanks for the comment. For sure, it’s about personal taste. Some people like certain pitches and some pick their bells depending on the key of the song to see which ones fits better.

The LP. Has a little ring to it. I like dry, but need a little ring to enter the musical world.
@RomanPercussion

Yea I know what you mean, for me it depends on the bell but dry is necessary too. I love the LP bell, like you said a little ring, just enough 👌🏼

The first, second and fourth bells were my favorites. I am fortunate enough to own three JCR bells. I have one low and one high-pitched bongo bell, and one chacha bell. I remember each time I purchased them, as the selection process for me was quite personal. Not being able to see, God has blessed me with a heightened sense of hearing, so I based my selection process on songs and bands that I like. However, the first bell to my collection really happened by accident. Some years ago, my uncle took me to a guitar center down here in Houston to watch me play the congas and other percussive instruments that I could not afford. I wanted him to play with me, so I told him to go find a cowbell, and it happened to be the first bongo bell that I would buy, as it sounds almost exactly like the one heard in Poncho Sanchez's Coco May May. The second one that I bought was my chacha bell, based on the one heard in the mid-fifties to early '60s recordings from the original Orquesta Aragon. The low-pitched bongo bell that I bought based on the second time that I got to see the new Orquesta Aragon at Seattle's jazz alley. If you don't mind, I would like to share an audio example via Dropbox link here, as I believe these bells, especially the ones from JCR are worth sharing with others as they are now collectors items.

I have a set of 10 different bongo bells. Reyes, CP (Colombian percussion) Pezkao, LP (Barrio Bell, ES-15, quite good) and three JCR bells which are my favorite ones. I like the JCR high pitch and the JCR low tone too. I think JCR bells are unbeatable. Greetings from Bogotá, Colombia.

Hey Will. Loved this video! I like the pattern you're playing on the cowbells. If I'm not mistaken, it's the normal typical pattern, but you're hitting the 1, 1-and, 2 in a particular rhythm that makes it sound really cool. Just wanted to ask a couple of questions: What's the name of the backing sound track? And also, do you have any idea where the Reyes Percussion cowbell can be purchased online? I can't seem to find it.

It depends on the style of band and music your gonna play, the jcr,and Lp bells I think are good for conjunto, one must know how to use the right bell for the right situation.

Very True! I typically am a “stickler” for making sure the bongocero’s bell and the Mambo bell from the Timbalero sound well together. Hence I have several bell options to make sure 😂

Hi Will, When you play the J3, is it muffled in any way? Do you get any overtones in real life that somehow didn't get captured in the video recording? I got a J3, and I have to really wrap my hand around it to get a dry sound.
@RomanPercussion
@RomanPercussion 3 года назад
Hey Arvind, so I did not do any muffling to the J3. I think the J3 has some overtone but the overtone isn’t so noticeable. The J2 for example, I believe cuts more and has more overtone. You do have to grip it to get a dryer sound. But for me, it wasn’t until I bought the J2 when I noticed the difference. J2 is much more lively. Hope this helps!
@arvindmohais
@arvindmohais 3 года назад
@@RomanPercussion Thanks Will! In your video the J3 does sound pretty dry, which I like. Good to know that you achieved that using some grip-based muting.
