We make two of our absolute favorite home canned recipes to enjoy during the upcoming winter season.
First up is Canned Coleslaw, a great addition to any meal and doesn't disappoint with its tangy flavor and crunchy texture.
We followed up with Canned Candied Jalapeños, also know as Cowboy Candy. A crowd pleaser and a wonderful topping.
Our 2021 Alaska Calendar is available for purchase!

Well you all inspired this 60 year old to try new things. I have spent the last 30 years in a fog working so hard to live but not living. I feel as though I woke up. There are several vlogs I follow. Lol I think that is what they are called. I learn from all of you. This year I planted 8 12x4 raised beds. I learned a lot. Like not to plant a tomato jungle. Plants need water and soil management for nutrients. Blossom end rot. My family laughs at me when I am out there giving my garden a milk bath. It worked and also kept powdery mildew away. I also am learning water bath canning. I made your cowboy candy. I also learned from doing that. I had jalapeño and Serrano so that is what I used. Oh my gosh it is hot. I used the F word in front of my dad. We were both dying laughing. A good memory. I also canned the brine as I seen you all do. Thank you for helping to bring me back to enjoying living instead of just living. I wish you both an amazing life together. FYI not sure if my husband is as happy. He now has really long honey do lists. But he does love the end results of the garden and canning. As well as spend9ng time together working on it. Thank you 💕

Hey. I agree. LOVE that lifestyle. My house is close to the woods and way off the road. I have a couple of gardens AND thank GOD a cool basement for storing ... I live as basic as possible , went a year n 1/2 living with no power BUT house insurance found out and said they’d drop me IF I didn’t get power hooked up. 😡. I HATE the way ppl are dictated to on HOW to live. I’d LOVE to live in Alaska 😊😊😊😊⚠️⚠️⚠️

What a great vinegary slaw recipe on a GRAND scale! Drove from Chugiak to Trapper Creek to Talkeetna and home again on Monday and mentally waved to you guys when I drove through Willow! Part of our winter prep this year has been allocating more of our salaries towards stocking up, as we haven't gotten a moose yet and our garden wasn't the raging success that yours has been this year! Sometimes I feel like I'm less self-sufficient this way, but I'm also able to keep a lot of our local farmers going with our purchases, so I'm looking on the bright side with that one!
@Tara-id3rk
@Tara-id3rk 3 года назад
I also live in Chugiak and my garden was also NOT a success this year. Too wet, too cold, too many slugs :( Bummer! Hopefully we get better weather next summer! I’d also like to build a greenhouse in the near future for different crops. And to keep the chickens out :)

You have so much knowelge about prepping, how to make dishes look wonderfull, with the right ingriedients and always a la minute. And your pantry is so awsome stuffed with delischous Produkts. In Germany these Staff would make you a great income, but maybe not such a beautyful life. Greetings from germany

I tend to use those kale ribs, etc, when making veggie stock, along with summer squash & carrot peelings, semi-dried outer layers of onions, onion rootlets and greens that are too tough or withered to eat, etc. It ends up making a pretty good broth.

We have a ziploc bag in the freezer where we throw in everything thats left over from preparing veggies. Small pieces of bell pepper that we peel of the stem, the tips you cut of from onions, carrot peels, wilted parsley, kale ribs, ... Throw everything in a Slowcooker when the bag is full and let it simmer, pour it off, fill up with water and repeat two or three times.

We used to ferment a lot of veggies back then in USSR and we kept them in barrels and tubes outside. Because of salt content they won't freeze fully even in the winter and it's an ok way to preserve your vegetables even in a cold climate if you don't have a root cellar.
