A Neil gem, and very well played! Verse 6:45, Minutia at 9:53 (Am), 12:15 (F), 15:50 (G), 18:30 (E string) and 19:30 (C). Just brilliant

Hey, I’m a massive Neil fan for 30 years and an acoustic player for almost as long, though I’ve only got serious about it in the last 3-4 years. I play without a pick using my index finger reinforced by my thumb. Although I can do most acoustic styles fairly well, Neil’s characteristic “percussive melodic” thing eluded me for some reason. Then, out of the blue when I was absent-mindedly noodling with Young-esque chord progressions about a week ago, I suddenly figured it out. I’ve now been rewatching your Neil vids. Apart from the continuity of the rhythm, I think the most valuable point you make these is that the trick to mimicking his playing style is to be a bit sloppy. For most of the other artists I try to mimic - Paul Simon, Stephen Stills, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, etc. - precision is key. But not so Neil.

Nicely done! I've been working on more and more Neil covers and working on getting his playing style down, and you really have nailed it here. I have a 1979 Yamaha FG-335 which I keep permanently in stepped down tuning and I play a lot of my Neil covers on it, so that's a way to go. Any Neil fan who has multiple guitars and can leave one in that tuning full time, I highly recommend it. And if you can do that with a vintage guitar, the added bonus is less tension on the neck and bridge. Again, superb job on this lesson. Thanks!

Something that took me ages to realise is how he sometimes let's up strokes ring out a bit during a chord change, a kind of snarly noise that adds grit and darkness to the tone, I remember when I realised and started adding to my playing a friend I used to jam with commented he liked the way I played Neil's songs and how did I get that sound into the playing, thanks for this great tutorial and really well explained interpretation. 😊

Hello Justin I hate to be picky but at the end of the little riff he plays at the end of the chorus he goes from E7 to A7. Try it and you'll hear what I mean as it took me years to work what was different when I played along with the original. Good work regardless, Benny
@myyootube2
@myyootube2 4 года назад
To play the studio version, the chord you play at the end of the bridgy part (shown at 19:55) should not be an F but rather an A major, which holds and then drops back into the verse as Am. I just looked at the the Farm Aid version 2004 and see that he does play an F (to G) there but that's not the original transition.
