Lindsey Buckingham is still alive, has anyone tried asking him about these details?
@RobertNolan
@RobertNolan 3 месяца назад
The amount of cocaine that fueled the making of this album would probably make Pablo Escobar blush. The hour long cocaine infused arguments were at the forefront of every session and it would more than likely be the longer lasting memory than how the guitar was set up for Dreams. This is ultimately my assumption in the end based on the history, but I would definitely love to hear if he actually remembers it!
@ScottatHouseonaHill

@@RobertNolan I agree, but that being said, Lindsey is also a freaking perfectionist. I wouldn't be surprised if he remembered it all exactly as it happened in the studio.

To tell the truth, the best part of the song is the first part and the simplest, just two bass notes. Lindsay knows exactly how to accentuate this. Brilliant.

I'm old. Been playing 59 yrs. I have vintage gear from the time. I can easily get the sound. Use a wah pedal as an expression pedal to get the bends. Lindsey was not a string bender. His first instrument was banjo and he used the picking technique. I met him and we discussed it. A dedicated attack pedal with slow attack also helps. Brian May used this on Killer Queen.

Interesting info, thanks. Yes compressor pedals with mix option are a powerful tool I use as well for tone shaping, also multiple amps mixed.

One has to take the whole 60's and 70's music culture/practice into account. The transition from tube amplifiers to solid state and introduction of modular effects pedals also facrors in. Mixing a clean signal through one amp and a borderline breakup signal through another amp (one that would distort according just to pick dynamics) was standard blues/rock practice, Leslie's were quite common (along with Hammonds, as well as tape echoes). The volume swells alone are quite prominent and etheral. A very simple technique which is always underrated (nobody thinks of a volume pedal as an effects pedal). It also sounds like the final clean signal is ran through solid state amplification/P.A. board for clarity and amplitude/volume.

Lindsey is a very underrated guitarist. His approach to recording a song and building it up from the bare bones is really creative and amazing to listen to. He’s definitely been an influence on my playing as a guitar player. Would love to see you tackle “Go Your Own Way” that song has several guitar parts layered throughout the whole song. From the solo lines to the volume swells placed through the verses. It’s a well stacked song

its overrated to call every well-respected, often imitated, admired, awarded rock guitar player with fans the world over and milions of albums sold, underrated. Lindsey. Buckingham iIS NOT underrated. He's one of the best rock guitarists alive. Everybody.recognizes this to be true. Nobody denies Lindsey's impact. or talent as an artist and guitar player. Nobody would say he wasn't. Can't fools just stop throwing around the underrated moniker like they know so much more more than anybody else, its high level douchebaggery in action. Rick Nielsen is not. underrated and neither is his band Cheap Trick. Nobody's underratesd, furthermoire it probably shouldn't even be a thing Society would be well served by eliminating the word from language wholesale.

@mpirron1 to the average listener he may be underrated but anyone who knows what a pentatonic scale is he is held bin the highest regard. Production techniques he used and his understanding of what a song needs or doesn't need is legendary. The band followed his every direction their confidence in him unwavering. See my comment on Ken's interview.

This was fascinating. To me it was obvious off the bat that he was playing the Les Paul in the recording. And I totally agree it could easily be a Marshall. The Leslie I wouldn't have guessed at all. And I was also astonished when I heard those bass notes in the licks. Fascinating all round. He really isn't as appreciated by most guitar players as he should be.

I'm not a guitarist, but this has been one of my favorite albums since I found it on vinyl in college, and I've always been curious about the instrumentation of this song. (I've listened to Dreams hundreds of times and have never even been sure if the electric guitar part was really a guitar!) Anyway, thank you so much for this, you nailed it. I watched another, very famous RU-vidr 'analyze' this song and was really disappointed and confused that the acoustic guitar part he plays on the chorus does not actually sound like the song. That sent me down a YT rabbit hole, and to this video. Fantastic job, well done!

This is great! I’ve put lots of thought into what makes this song sound so unique and this is the closest I’ve seen! Though something that I think might also have gone into it is two tracks on the electric, which could be where we’re hearing the bass notes/chords over those licks. That could’ve been what Ken meant by having the dry guitar in the left channel. Maybe that channel is strictly chordal stuff and the rest is the Leslie parts. I also saw that isolated tracks video you referenced just before clicking on yours and had the same realization about the F/G in the chorus, and you confirmed it for me!

To me, what explains it all is the discussion Buckingham had with Pete Seeger years ago in which Seeger asked about Buckingham’s emulation of banjo in his guitar playing. LB experimented with sounds in a very active way together get the feelings he wanted. The most amazing guitarists in the 70s did this. This is what composers do.
