(warning - this video is NOT exciting to watch. Absolutely nothing happens, which is exactly what we wanted.) We got dropped too shallow, because of the air consumption calculations we needed to expedite to the bottom. Did a lot more stirring up than we usually do, our bad. People ask why. Have you ever looked down, further than you were supposed to go and wondered? Me too. Well I haven't found any monsters yet, still looking down and wondering what's further down.
6 tanks, 10 minutes to get down, mandatory 2.5 hours of deco to get back to the surface. We go through the reefs and see the pretty fish and coral on the way up.

Great video Dave! Thanks for posting. Glad you made it ok. I dove there in the late 60's with my dad when I was only 13. We were on an excursion with others and we went down past 200' We estimated 230' Our Aqualung brand depth gauges only went to 200. Just one tank. My dad and I were the only ones who went that deep. The others stayed about 170 or less. I wasn't as scared as I should have been. We didn't have enough experience or training to go that deep. Looking back as I got older I realized how crazy that was for us in that situation. One of the guys in the dive franticly dove down to us and freaked out signaling us to go up right away. He said when we got back he was afraid we were never going to come up. He saw us just keep going down. My dad said he just wanted to get to the next ledge and then we were coming up. Nitrogen narcosis had to have set in. I felt kind of like I was dreaming. Interesting experience but I'm not thrilled my dad put our lives in jeopardy.

@@KevinEontrainer381 haha, its not complicated if you don't push the boundaries. If you want to push, then you need to do your homework and follow the plan, no exceptions, no excuses. After you learn how to do it then software (vplanner) will do most of the work, that's what you see in the post. Write it down on wax paper and follow what you wrote down, dive the plan. Computer on your wrist is a back up as well as your buddies. Most dive profiles are go straight down then come up slow, its what depth to stop at and how long to stop thats important. On tje way up we have fun going through walls, swim throughs, reefs and so on. Its simpler than it looks and Deep Exposure in Cozumel can teach you.

I dove for a couple years, and the deepest we ever went was about 70 ft in Lake Michigan on a wreck dive. Surprisingly good visibility (about 60 ft or so) but it was SO COLD, about 48F on the bottom. You could actually see the thermocline as you passed thru it at about 20 ft.. The day we did the dive it reached 104F in Chicago. I was so cold it took me the rest of the day to warm up. This dive creeps me out just watching.

I'm the guy that thinks IFR flying kills the fun of VFR flying. I don't tech dive for the fun of it but because I have to. Now I have plan my dives, check the types and percentages of gases in my tanks, put on at least two tanks on the sides or back, spend a bunch more money per dive (have you priced 7 regulators?), have to have my own equipment and tons of it which I drag around on flights hotels beaches boats rinse it and hang it all to dry... diving is work now when it used to be play. What was a simple excursion now takes all day and forget doing it with anyone you know including your family (they're not crazy). I have to go deep or go into a cave now. I wont go on a single tank dive anymore, its not fulfilling. My advice, stay light, stay cheap, keep it fun, maybe a mask and rent the rest. I think tech divers do it because they have to. After you have a couple hundred dives you'll know if it's still working for you, know you likely wont come back from tech diving and it's not for the fun, or the fish or the coral that I do it. It's for the excitement, precision, discipline and mission. And there is no depth that is enough that's all bull although you'll tell everyone a certain number, you're lying to them and you know it. Tech diving is like IFR flying it's not just for fun anymore...

10K for VFR 10K for IFR, for me IFR is not worth it unless you're going to fly at least twice a month and stay current. IFR is a life change, VFR is for fun.

Scuba is a funny sport, it takes almost no physical ability and it's not at all physically demanding. I don't even think it should be called a sport but never the less it attracts self appointed experts and keyboard bad-asses for anyone that can swim and breath. You don't even have to be a good swimmer so that leaves the only thing you have to do well is breath. Most people got that down by the age of one. Other than that a moderate amount of knowledge and the ability to follow a dive plan without excuses. It's such a low physical skilled activity they want to make it bigger and more difficult than it really is. If you can follow rules and breath and can kind-of swim, a little more than a descent dog paddle will do, you have all it takes to be a great scuba diver. They see an easy hill to take so they take it and claim superiority, the beta male formula. Interestingly enough I haven't seen any beta males at 400 feet yet nor have I seen any an hour from the entrance in a cave underwater. Those are the Non-Beta Zones.

the gauges don't work for this kind of diving. these things tell us a lot more than the gauges do. We plan for over an hour for each dive not including the equipment prep and mixing gases. A friend said that someone could dive just the gauge and it should work. As far as plastic time cards go, we have plastic paper in our wetsuit sleeves that is used on the way up. Shows each stop; depth, time and gas mix we should be on.

Dane, it doesn't feel very different at 400 than at 100. A major consideration is volume or consumption per breath or commonly understood as per minute. At 400ft you use 11 times the volume as at the surface and you don't want to run out of air. Also offloading the nitrogen by ascending slowly which is covered pretty well in basic courses. With Trimix you can change a lot of the parameters; if we go lean on Nitrogen then we can lower our equivalent narc depth, which we max out at 70ft, so we're not all narced out. We can go rich on 02 when we are off-loading (coming up) so we bleed the nitrogen out faster. We can also push the toxic levels of the gases further away by leaning them out. The difference between dives to 100 and 400 could be summed up in deeper dives have a lot of planning, math, calculations and discussions about them amongst the team. I like to fill my own tanks too and I'll use 6 on one dive. Dives to 100 you may spend a two minutes discussing it then jump in breathing whatever's in the tank Jose gave you.

@mowthatlawn5422
@mowthatlawn5422 7 лет назад
Besides feeling a little lucky when you get back to the surface, there were no changes, unfortunately our equivalent narcotic depth is 80ft or so, there's no getting narked. You'd be better off on air going to 150 if you want a good buzz. There are things to take note of, the deeper you go the faster you descend. So once you're deeper than 250 you might want to get a hold of your auto inflator and start putting air in your wing or you'll fly past your planned depth.

Regarding Yuri, it was also a matter of experience and equipment....
@eriknodland8352
@eriknodland8352 5 лет назад
That actually isn’t true, the greatest pressure change is in the first 30 feet, the deeper you go, the less your wing compresses per foot, so if you are neutral and descend, you will be less negative then if you do the same thing at 10 feet. The difference, it takes you longer to notice those changes, and it creeps up on you more, so I agree that you should stay on top of it the deeper you go.

Our END (equivalent narcotic depth) is about 119ft, meaning we only experience what anyone would feel at 119ft. We do that by lowering the percentage of nitrogen in the gas(tanks). in other words we're not narced, although I continually petition the team for a END depth of 130 or 140 so I can have a little more fun. This was taken from the Plan, so at 400 we had an END of 119 and at 240 we had an END of 117. That's as narced as we got, not at all. Level 400ft 3:56 (10) Trimix 10/65 1.31 ppO2, 104ft ead, 119ft end Level 240ft 1:00 (19) Trimix 18/45 1.49 ppO2, 95ft ead, 117ft end

id love to know what you do too. how deep can you go? The idea of NOT having something to breath makes me want to breath. I can probably go to twenty feet as long as I can push off the bottom to come back. I've tried to remain cool on the way back up to the surface but there's something about not being able to breath that makes me scramble to the top as fast as I can.

Super interesting video for those who are interested in technical diving. I have two questions: What is your SAC rate and how much did you consume of your 125 cu ft Trimix 10/65 during this dive, specifically at 200+ ft? I assume you had doubles of the 10/65? How thick was your suit? Is neoprene useless at 400ft?

Couple of questions: 1) what wing/harness/backplate system r u using 2) which computer is that (shearwater?) 3) which course teaches you to handle more than 1 stage 4) what skills are most important to master (or near master) prior to doing a tech course? (I.e. advanced nitrox and deco procedures) 5) how do you pick a good tech instructor? Thanks guys

@davidkey6145
@davidkey6145 5 лет назад
i want to answer 4 differently by stating the differences between rec and tec diving since i don't know what your skills are or aren't. rec is got drunk the night before because youre on vacation, 5 minute of planning on the boat before you get in, check for a figure near you every once in a while. You've probably been dropped in a place you cant go too deep. check your depth and air every once in a while and do things to have fun and make it enjoyable. tech diving, didn't get drunk the night before, instead hydrated (because some people say it helps with deco issues and they could be right) instead, two hours of planning with software that does all the calculations for you with team to discuss strategies, bail outs, strengths and weaknesses of the plan so everyone is on the same page. leave early in morning to fill your own tanks with the right mixes (one to two hours) best to mix your own gas because your life depends on it. drag all the tanks to the boat, that can be a lot of tanks of there are two deep dives with three people. If we're six a piece that's 18 tanks for the first dive unless a rebreather is on the team, could be 9 more tanks for the second dive. the next difference is putting all the equipment on, it can take a while and you dress warmer so it can get uncomfortable quickly with hundreds of lbs on you. when you check your buddy you look at their eyes because its a more serious and meaningful buddy check. if you're at the deep part you don't get separated. in your head you keep track of everyone and where everyone's gas is. in tech diving you don't have to find something to do for fun, tech diving is the fun, it's serious and it's fun. The ascent part looks like most rec deep dives, its darker and we do gas switches but we are in the coral or coming up a wall and may see rec divers after a couple of hours.

The software will do it quickly but then you have to get three people who are betting a lot to agree on the deco stops. That means going back through and adjusting the stops. There's a link to the plan on one of the comments. It takes longer to fill the tanks with the right mixes, label and load them.
