I really enjoyed your ramble about buying hand-dyed yarn. I'm a 19 year old college student who can't afford hand-dyed yarn but it feels like the entire knitting community basically uses that exclusively. It was heart warming to hear you share how you knit from "cheaper" yarns for about a decade like myself! :) I watched till the end, so I wanted to share what I'm working on! I'm currently working on a cardigan from Laine Magazine 4 (Morginn), and a cowl by Andrea Mowery (Across the Pond)
Thank you for watching! I've totally been there! I pretty much used knitpicks (when they go on sale) exclusively in my college years, and made lots of pretty things with it! And ooh I've been eyeing the Morginn, maybe this is a sign? 😬
@@MelanieAsato Before you decide to cast on, just know it takes FOREVER to knit. I'm making the size Large granted, but one row takes me like 5-10 minutes before you put some stitches on hold for the sleeves (maybe I'm exaggerating on the time for one row, but it still feels like forever, you know?)
As for my current wip, I'm frogging a nearly-finished sweater all the way back to the beginning because I didn't make a gauge swatch and it doesn't fit at all! About time I learned my lesson! So I'm taking a break from big projects and knitting some scrap yarn scrunchies for now.
I was knitting on a sock wip which was going great until I got distracted by your yarn haul and just had to tink back a row 😅 I love your colour sense so it was really interesting to hear you talk through your inspirations and the story behind each colour way you create. Thanks for another lovely episode and for inspiring me with your gorgeous projects as always!
Lovely episode Mel!! Loved hearing the color inspirations behind you latest collection. We played the goldfish game often as children when my grandparents took us to the parks in Taiwan. If we won, we would walk home with little goldfish in plastic bags tied up with a pink loop and happily put them in my grandfather's fish tub in his garden. I'm currently knitting on colorwork socks! Take care!~Stephanie
I'm knitting the Perec Vest by Orlane Sucche, like you I love her style. I'm using a lovely natural yarn, Garthenor No 2 in Shale - beigey grey and was going really well until I tried on the body and saw that there was a definite colour band difference where I started the last skein. It's undyed!!who would have thought I'd need to alternate. Must've got a different sheep or part of the sheep's fleece...so I will rip back and alternate just over that transition, the other couple of 50g skeins were pretty identical
First time here, woooow what a yarn inspiration, want IT ALL, some day...im a designer and lately its been alott on the needles, just finish aran/ braided sweater 😍😍 with one strand angora merino and one strand mohair what a lux. Looking forward to see Next podcast, and just wanna get some of your yarn some day!! Regard from Norwegian follower 🇳🇴😍
Mel, great podcast as always. I really love the fact that you take the time to explain what the yarn names mean, not only do I get to enjoy looking at your beautiful work, but I also am learning about Japanese traditions and culture, what a bonus. I am currently working on socks and a sweater (the Summer Tea shirt) trying to get both off my needles. I definitely have a love hate relationship with garmet knitting. Love the beginning and the end, but get tired and bored in the middle. But now after seeing your progress I feel a renewed inspiration to "get back at it".
Hi Mel! I loved catching up and seeing all your beautiful new yarn. I'm working on a secret test knit that's a shawl, it was off to a rough start but I'm having a lot of fun with it now. I love love your new kingyo sukui color way! When I used to visit relatives in Taiwan, we would go to night markets and try to scoop the goldfish. I was always terrible at it 😅
Such a beautiful collection! I love your type btw, I would definitely be all over that as well. I just started hand dyeing yarn and yesterday I cast on my first pair of socks that use my dyed yarn! It is so satisfying to use the colorway I created to make something beautiful! Have a wonderful day!!
Hello! New subscriber here. I am working on a prayer shawl. Well I'm pretty much done I just need to finish 11 more stitches...lol. Yeah i know. I would finish but I ran out of yarn and need to buy more. So while I'm waiting on the yarn ( more like my banking account to fill up) I'm knitting a scarf. I haven't been knitting as long as I have been crocheting, but I love them both equally.
Beautiful collection, love how you explained the details of the inspirations. I’m knitting on a make-it-up-as-I-go shawl in rustic, naturally dyed yarns from both here in Ireland and a local yarn from Transylvania. It’s a fun knit!
Gorgeous yarn... I'm working on the Mynydd shawl by Nellie and Eve.. Its mindless and I'm enjoying it very much. Just what I need at the moment and I'm using a series of browns in wool from my stash.. Love your podcast👍🏾🌞
Oh! When you said Matsuri I immediately thought of Obon Festival :) Your colourways are so wonderful. I'm working on a kids poncho, its a bit of an experiment for me. And finishing up a boxy style knitted tshirt for a client.
I love this episode. Your new colorways are just lovely. Your sweater turned out so well. It is always nice to catch up - I am working on a my little secret crop by Jessie Maed Designs and getting ready to start my Christmas fight knits.
Just found your podcast and love it as well as the yarn you are dyeing :) I was contemplating my next yarn purchase for weeks now and I really enjoyed seeing the yarn you bought as I am a big fan of litlg and positive ease too. Unfortunately buying yarn from Japan is not possible for me as of all the taxes... Looking forward to watching more episodes! All the best from Austria :)
Hi. I don't think your pods are ever too long. I'm working on the Yoki sweater from Making Stories issue 5. Did have a lot of trouble at the start with shaping while keeping in pattern. That's just my inexperience. Also Purl Soho's Half & half wrap.
Hi Mel! Lovely episode.. it's always so much fun catching a glimpse into your knitting world. If you don't mind sharing, but where do you usually purchase your high-waist pants? I often have a hard time finding them ..
Thank you so much! And I usually shop at a lot of second-hand shops here in Japan, so a lot of them are very obscure brands I've never heard of 😂 But my absolute fave brand that I can always find pants from are called "Margaret Howell" - they have great options!
Thank you for talking about how it's okay to not buy hand-dyed yarn if its not within the budget. I've been really struggling with contemplating on buying hand dyed yarn and your words really helped me a lot! That aside, I've never tried doing stripes with speckled-ish hand dyed yarn so can you give some tips on how to do it like you did in the Agave sweater?
I'm so glad my words helped! And I think for striping with variegated hand dyed yarn - it's best to use it along with a tonal or a more solid-colored yarn along side it so that you can really see the stripes pop! Mine is pretty subtle, but you can see that I used "Bramble" which is a tonal, to make sure that there's still stripes there!
Hi Mel! Your sweater is so pretty and looks great on you. By the way, I love the chair you are sitting on. Is it a Japanese design? I watch you from Tokyo and I can totally relate to all the Matsuri talk. I have been in Japan since age 5 and all your talk about the Matsuri is so nostalgic. The yarn colorways you came up with are a perfect match. Have a great week!
Hihi! Thank you so much for your kind words! And we're actually not sure 😬 my husband and I used to run a vintage furniture shop in LA, but Tim still collects furniture and got this at an auction. He says he thinks it's an one-off Japanese craftsman piece but he's still researching lol!
some vids are just 10 minutes, others can reach 2 hours. record what and how it suits you. I can always use the pause button when I need to be excused ( HA-HA ) the Agave looks nice and snug without giving too much heat usual entertaining episode currently, I am test knitting for an American designer/knitter Tim and yourself keep taking care xxxx
please remember to look at the camera so we feel you are engaging with us and not with yourself. Love your content otherwise and the Agave. so many basic raglan sweaters lately.
