Oh my goodness, thank you SO MUCH for the super sweet shout out! I'm glad I found you as well, I've been enjoying watching you 😊💜 PS you're definitely motivating me to film the video about how we started the shop and all of that, and I will have to deep dive possum as well. I appreciate all your kind words. By the way, other people have probably mentioned this but knitting colorwork socks inside out is definitely super simple! No purling involved. You literally just knit the same way but your knitting is turned inside out so that the floats run along the outside and therefore should stretch out a bit more... I hope that makes sense and you should definitely try it!
I'm so glad the coffee came out of your teccla sweater! I'm pretty sure that to knit a sock inside out you knit in stockinette in the round working on the inside of your circle with the floats on the outside and then when you get past the colorwork you can flip the sock right side out and continue knitting. It just helps your floats be subtlety longer because they're on the outside instead of the inside if that makes sense. I'm so glad I am a continental knitter now. It makes ribbing so much faster!❤🧶
Oh my goodness, I gasped when I saw your gorgeous tree! It would make a beautiful card. This year was my first year to Rhinebeck and the trees there are gorgeous as well. Thank you for sharing! ❤
Don't worry about purling at inside out color work knitting ... it is not happening. Just turn your cuff inside out and knit as you always do. That's all. It seems as if it worked pretty good on my cuff! Thank you for your lovely episode 🤎
Good Morning knitting Amber! I love your fall socks, so color appropriate! Your insights into knitting challenges you experience are so helpful to me, as a newish knitter. As a "forever " crochter, I wanted to learn to knit, in order to make "smooth" socks. But this winter, after not knitting for a year, I discovered what knitted knockers is all about, so I'm looking forward to doing that for my Christmas charity project. I so enjoy your filming style of real life and music choice! Thank you for sharing. Peace and Blessings always, Kay 🧶🧦🍂
Amber, thank you for sharing your time! I always look forward to your podcasts because you are so calming! Also so glad the coffee came out of your tecla sweater. Such good information!
You are nice and tall at 5’8”. I on the other hand am 4’ 9” but I have a long torso and very short legs. It is interesting when we start thinking about body sizes and being able to knit the same sweaters, just need to adapt to the torso length. Always look forward to your podcast, so thank you for giving your time to share with the rest of us. Wow, so happy you were able to rescue your knitting project after the coffee accident 🙏🏻
Hello Patricia! That's one of the things I appreciate about knitting. I can tailor it to my body! Thank you so much for watching. I so appreciate your support!
I'm glad your sweater lived to tell the tale. A friend of mine stained a huge patch of the shoulder of an almost-finished cardigan. She ended up tearing out the whole sweater.
Amber, I'm so glad that those coffee stains came out of your project. I probably would have had a temper tantrum and ripped the thing to pieces. I love all the earrings I have purchased from Pittsburgh Mercantile online in the last couple of years. Staff members are pleasant and helpful. If you ever watched Cady Jax knitters when they were on RU-vid, Jackie and Caitlin sometimes wore earrings from Pittsburgh Mercantile.
I always like when your podcast pops up. You are a calming person to listen to. I bought the same sock pattern with the color work, so I am interested in how yours turns out.
❤❤always excited to see ur visits 🎉🎉🎉 Thanks Amber,,,🎉 I am loving the colorwork cuff club,,,,ghosts on my needles now,,with one socks 👍 I have a few friends that work the colorworkinside out,,,,!!and they find it helps keep loose,,,, Inam ok on my 9 inch and went up to just 2,75,,,,its a snug fit but can get it over my ankle,,,,wouldnt give them away either, Love all the socks,,, Will check out that sock pattern!!!!love it,, And the podcasters,,,, Elaine💕🏡
The smock stitch is very easy to do, and looks great. I used it on my 2x2 ribbing to make a plain teal sweater (in Lanas Light yarn) fancier after watching Fruity Knitting's interview with a designer. I can relate to knitting for a short torso; I am 5'2" with a 31" inseam. I am too risk averse to consider drinking anything other than water while knitting; your tale confirms my worst fears (although you could always spill coffee while wearing the sweater, so it's good that you know how to get it out). Knitting colorwork socks inside out just means that the sock is inside out while you are knitting on the right side (you're knitting from the inside, but the floats are being stretched on the outside of the sock as you knit along).
LOl, you're not losing your mind, I too got the maryann sweater when it was free! Completely forgot had it in my library, you've inspired me to knit it. Knitting socks inside out, just flick your knitting to the inside, so you'll be knitting on the 'back' needle instead of the 'front'. The floats sit on the outside of the sock, giving more space for the floats,. It's a bit weird for the first row of the first time you do it, but then it makes sense, it's so easy. I knit & teach colourwork sock knitting in my country, I encourage my students to use 9" circs, which most do, but there are plenty of videos. I also watch BlackCat Knit co, the New Zealand possum is considered a invasive pest over there, so they had to be culled, their fur is divine, so soft and smooshy. We do get NZ possum wool over here in Australia, wonderful for socks, and for those who have sheep wool sensitivities, however it's been contentious as initially how the fur was obtained wasn't humane.
Thanks Amber, for another great video. I always get excited when I see a podcast from you pop up. I just finished to colorwork motif on first sock of the August Colorwork Cuff Club socks. I think I better stop and try them on before I go any further.
I love your sweater! And I wholeheartedly agree with you, body island is way worse than sleeve knitting-I was telling this to my friend just yesterday. As for colourwork in the round I recently failed at color sock knitting because I am very new at socks and my friend gave me the same advice “knit it inside out”. So basically you knit the same way but turn your work inside out so you have the floats looking “out” -it almost looks like you are hiding your knitting 😂. Thanks for keeping me company in a day where I needed some decompressing after a long week.
I've been enjoying the Black Cat Knit Co podcasts, too! I'll have to look for Galanthus Knits. I plan to do my Advent knitting in January. My December will be too busy. My kids and grandkids will be here for the month, then they're moving overseas Jan 1, so I'll be crying in my knitting (since I don't like beer 😉). I can take my time and enjoy the knitting therapy since the Christmas gift knitting season will be over.
Dear Amber, thank you for another inspiring episode. I have never knit colorwork socks but I whatch Amber from Noble Character Crafts on youtube where she describes in detail how she knits her colorwork socks (also from Summer Lees sock club) to fit her - and it makes perfect sense. Hope you find her descriptions helpful. Love, Christina from Austria
Colorwork socks for me are best knit inside out where the design is facing inside and you end up knitting the back row of the needle instead of the front…after you try it it will make better sense to you. 😊
I can empathize with the coffee debacle, I've done something similar!! I think I was more worried about the sticky creamer than the actual coffee. 🤣😂🤣 I would consider that one yarn an aran weight, which is somewhere between worsted and bulky. You're probably going to have enough yarn for 2-3 hats! 😉 The way I understand "knitting inside out" is that you knit, but the wrong side is on the outside... I guess the easiest way is to say you have the knitting on the inside.. it's really hard to explain, even though I can easily visualize it. Start it as you normally would, when you get to the color work flip it inside out and keep knitting. Hopefully that makes sense.
I also had trouble with that Summer Lee sock, I unpicked and started again, making my floats looser, used 9 inch 2.25 then changed to 2.75 for colourwork
So glad the coffee came out! I don't like knitting inside out colorwork (but have no issues with my tensions anyway 😊). You could try using a larger needle size. Help NZ by buying yarn with Bushtail Possum in it, because they are a diseaster for nature and cattle there! Have you ever watched Mark Vogel's video"s? He is so kind and calming!
Hi Amber, I love Summer Lee Design Co . Colorwork Cuff club, the motifs are so pretty. I had the same problem with the colorwork fitting over my (apparently gigantic) heel/instep. So I knit the second sock using the larger needles (US2) for the colorwork, knit inside out, but I also increased after the ribbing and before starting the chart to the next size stitch count. All these things combined eliminated the fit problem.
Great info! I had thought about increasing to the next size on my next pair. Glad to hear that helps! I'm also going to figure out how to do the knitting inside out thing! Lol
Hi Amber, if you do a youtube search for knitting colorwork inside out, there are a lot of videos showing how this is done. It is still knitting, not purling :) And thank you for podcast recommendations, both are new to me :)
Amber, STOP picking on yourself! You are lovely and so is your podcast. You also are very calming and one of my favorites, so let it go! Sometimes you are too hard on yourself. Any wait to see your new episodes when they come out. What town/township do you live in, I live in Girard Township most of my adult life. Maybe we were neighbors! Have since moved to NC in the area of the flooding. Our property was not hurt in the least, just a little short on utilities for a few days. ❤
I think they mean turn the sock inside out so the right side is inside but you still knit it on the right side (not purling) just your floats stretch more since they’re on the outside. You probably can’t see what you’re doing quite as well though.
Ok the coffee story is crazy because literally this morning I did the exact same thing. I went to set my coffee down, bumped my elbow on the table and splashed coffee into a brand new knitting bag filled with brand new sock yarn. Luckily the bag took the brunt of the coffee and my yarn was brown already but dang! We need coffee cups with warning labels!
There's an "Advent"-type sweater I'd like to knit. It is My Favorite Adventure, by Trysten Molina of Dragon Hoard Designs. I'm going to have to try those Intertwined Socks, they look very interesting 😊
I made a different pair of her colorwork socks and had the same issue 😭. Didn’t try on until after the heel decreases. They are so pretty and I’ll try again.
Amber. Would you be willing to recommend where in the US (or shipped to the US) to buy Drops yarn? I was given some Drops yarn in the past, and loved it. Thank you.
Hello! Yes! I always buy mine from Wool Warehouse. It is based in the UK but shipping fees are very reasonable and the shipping time is usually pretty good too.
Knitting socks “inside out” doesn’t mean purling, it is just pulling the sock through your needles, so the floats will be on the OUTSIDE rather than in the middle of your needles. So it looks inside out as you’re knitting. Clear as mud? 😅
I had the same problem with a sock. I knitted. The colorwork is so pretty, but I can't wear them. No matter how much I have tried, I can't get them over my heel.. I won't do colorwork ever again with socks..
Turn your sock inside out. Turn so your needles are at the back, no needle side closest to you. Now look down into the top of the sock. You will see the knit side of your sock with needles facing you. Start knitting.
The bushtail possum is considered an invasive pest in New Zealand. They are trapped for their pelts so yarn would be made from their fur. It doesn't sound very nice but this possum has had a devastating effect on agriculture in NZ. They carry bovine tuberculosis, which is a major threat to the dairy, beef and deer farming industries so there is a concerted effort to control their population.
