WA sounds like a great home base for all the reasons you gave. As a former cabin-in-the-woods resident: go overboard on insulation; seal every crack & crevice during framing; covered parking; and build on a foundation, not piers. The winds and critters will always be trying to get inside.

I think you are really making progress on the guitar, nice work! A cabin in the woods (or a tree house) sounds amazing. I never thought of living in a rainy environment as beneficial for work but it makes sense. I left a rainy/cloudy/dreary environment many years ago (MI) to out West (CO) where the sun shines most of the time. I've been in Utah for 4 years now and if I were to wait for a rainy day, I'd be waiting a few weeks or months 😄 Thanks for the great videos and insight.

Much like Washington, we also get a lot of rain up here on Vancouver Island, and you are so right, there is a season where one can get some creative work done. That being said, a build in Washington would be great, being a day trip away from so many beautiful. Good luck with everything Christian.

To add to the ideas. My place in the mountains is 500 sqft with 2 acres. When I need it for family/kids, the plan is to add to the existing property to reach the 1000-12000 sqft. This way you aren't "turned off" by soo small properties selling for less. I'll have a detached office converted from a shed and maybe a detached unit for parents/visitors. Suddenly this small cabin, by using the land property, can live as if it were a 2000+ sqft home...in phases.

Every time I watch one of your videos, I feel like you have taking me along on a journey. Beautiful scenery, captured perfectly, with a little insight as to what's going on with you. Glad you are liking Washington, in spite of the difficulty getting adequate sun on the panel sometimes. This is a response to your occasional house-battery woes . Two things that you can do 1- install a Lithium Ion house battery because they will charge three times faster ( and last 10 years). Also, if you do have to discharge them a lot ( think 50-70%) it won't affect battery life, AND the next day it will recharge 3x faster. 2- Have a portable generator to use if the seasonal lack of sun is a constant. The 100 AH Lithium Ion can be had for less than $350. The Honda generators are light weight and would easily store under the bed. And they are super quiet. As a 20-year motorhome dweller in his 70s, I have been thinking parallel to yours...where is home where it is a constant? Rent, buy land, buy a small house?? This nomad life has been great, but the packing up and moving a lot during summer/fall can be tiring. Thankfully my winter place is one where I can just sit outside a cute small town for 5 months.....for free. I like your approach to an unknown, WA in the winter. Try it. And you have. Best to you.

As a truck driver, I can relate to a lot of what you said. The temporariness of things out on the road…conversations are 95% w/ someone behind a counter…you have to be a certain type of person to do it & not go totally insane. I think it’s good to have a balance. I think everyone needs as you put it that “home base”…that re-grounds you. It’s not a lifestyle for everyone…but like in my case…hell, truck driving is the best way for me to earn a living. And it’s work that someone has to do. Like anything else I suppose. There’s a job for everyone. I think there’s no doubt that this is what you are meant to do-photography, filming, storytelling…but that home base is important. You’ve got to go home to recharge.

Always a treat to watch your videos. I live a little vicariously through them. My dream was also to live in the woods and build my own cabin/home. However I live in a small suburban city because it’s where my daughter is. So I did the next best thing to support my little dream and bought a 900 sq.ft bungalow that needed quite a bit of work. It helps me to release my creatively, my need to problem solve and my apparently annoying quality (so I’ve been told)of having to do it myself. My unsolicited advice when it comes to planning and construction (I also work in the industry) is don’t take the details for granted and be honest with yourself about your needs. So many of these luxury tiny homes give up storage and usability for the romance of art and architecture… two things I love very much. The cabins in your video are beautiful and are easy to fall for. I always need to step back and shake off the dream state to get back to being practical. I solve the problem of art and practicality with the choice of materials. The forms I choose must have function. When building a small home, I even try to make useful areas in the stud spaces. I also kept my costs down by purchasing things like all my kitchen cabinets from a home builder who was doing a show home renovation. Lots of work, but I’m building on a shoestring budget and I like to recycle if possible. Anyway, I’m certain you’ll do great. You already live in a tiny space, so your problem solving skills and use case scenarios for “stuff” is already far ahead of most people who plan to tackle such a project. Hi Chris, I do not really engage on social media but you are one of a very small list of people that I've been following this past year. As a fellow Creative, I think I completely understand your mindset and how you approach life and its unpredictable, exciting paths that often lead us to better understand ourselves. I come out of ad agencies in Europe and have been fortunate enough to lead creative teams for the last 20 years, and I just want you to know that you do absolutely beautiful work capturing moments with an instinctive sense for visuals + music. This is not a skill set but it's really a raw, pure talent that you either have or you don't. It's all about that natural curiosity and instinctive talent for storytelling. You absolutely got that. I mean it. Love what you do. And as I always try to imprint on the next generation of Creatives, 'trust your instincts'. It sounds like you're ready to find that perfect serene home base at this point in your life to make you feel happy, secure and grounded. Of course production value and wonderful cinematography too, but we get to see the adventures of your life without having to pay the full price. Beautiful! I'll share what a friend of mine did. She purchased a repo-property in the Sierra Nevada Mountains with acreage. Fixed it up and rented it out. Renters are paying the mortgage plus, she still maintains her low expense life style, while building equity. Maybe an option of some sort for you. Just a thought. Thank you for sharing your vision...

Interesting… I’m on to year three in my van and it’s been quite the ride! Literally. I’ve found myself, paid debts and made savings, met fantastic people, been to awesome places, all the while struggling to find that perfect home base. An address so to speak. Now I have an opportunity to take over and renovate my childhood home on five acres of beautiful west facing waterfront on an semi remote island. At first daunting, but now I’m ready to embrace the challenge. Yes it’s scary, yes I’ll have to give up a lot of my van life, but on the flip side I can express my creativity in rebuilding what my father started over 55 years ago. All on a piece of land that totally speaks to me and allows me to be in a community of like minded people. So I understand what you’re going through to say the least. Bryan from Vancouver

I knew that I recognized this A-frame treehouse from somewhere. Yeah, I first saw it on an episode from the RU-vid channel "Tiny House Giant Journey" . And, first, I thought I might have seen it on one of Kirsten Dirksen shows, as she had visited so many interesting homes. I love that you stayed there, I'm so very jealous. It looks like an amazing cabin to stay in for a minute. I live on the Key Peninsula, in WA, just over the Tacoma Narrows bridge. When I watched some of your other videos from the Puget Sound area, with images of majestic cedars and lichen covered branches, and constant rain. I knew you had to be near by, that is unmistakably western Washington, LOL! Anyways, I live on 10 acres of forested land, surrounded by rocky beaches. with my wife, dog, cats and catfish., near Home, WA. If you need a place to renegade camp for a stretch, it might be convenient. there's a few really, really nice campgrounds close by, as a back~up plan. It's good to have options.

just a thought this exact A-frame built on top of 2” x 6” x 9’ exterior walls build the front wall under the A out of stone inside and outside 9’ ceilings are really nice a little house on top of a little house 😎

My wife and I moved to Bellingham from Tahoe 2 years ago. We LOVE Washington. Bellingham is a very cool town and community with lots of rural 5 acre parcels just outside of town. As you know, the Cascades are just up the road and the water is right here (swimming, kayaking, crabbing, island exploring). It is a "mountain town" and a "port town" all in one. The summer and fall season are beautiful - plenty of sunny days and not too hot. Highly recommend. Will keep an eye out for a parcel for sales. Good luck!

The time spent in the rain just means the sunshine is 10x better when it’s given to you. I live in the sunshine state and rejoice when the rain (especially storms) arrives.

i'm late to the party... but better late than never? :) re: music - you are sooo right about the "deeper connection." music is a language of it's own. it can conjure emotions and feelings that [i feel] just cannot be expressed with words. which is why it goes so well with film! especially yours - you have a way of putting beautiful, emotive art (your video) together with other beautiful, emotive art (music) - and somehow, miraculously, making something even deeper and more beautiful together. i feel like that is a rare thing. it's like you're making something that is alive. and whenever you release a new video, i kind of have to prepare myself to watch it.... because you bring me to places that i may not be ready for. maybe that sounds corny, but it's true. i love your plan for buying land and having your own tree house - or whatever it will be (that yellow container place was rad). whatever you end up doing - not only will be it a creative outlet, an extension of yourself - but it also will have equity, so maybe think of it as 'home' and 'permanence' but also an investment... you could sell that one day and do something different. there are days i regret selling my old farmhouse, but it was a great experience reimagining it and i will take that and my creativity into new projects. the future isn't written yet! make it what you want. and i loved your grandfather's advice. sorry for the novel.... :)

Have you been to Whidbey Island? You have to take a ferry. Langley and Freeland are small villages, It's not very populated. There may be land available to build on. It has it's own vibe.

I have to say; I absolutely LOVE your strength, independence, logical thought, persistence and goal oriented way. I have no doubt that you will continue to be a success and will find your little slice of happiness in a home. I recently turned 59 and will be striking out to Europe for a few months and then begin to "wander" when I return to Texas. I've got several options but haven't decided which to pursue yet. The biggest downside will be missing my grandchildren and family. But I will never be short of stories to tell! Big hug from Texas!

As an amateur photographer myself, I always look forward to your videos. They're so perfectly done and the video settings are always done with an impeccable "photographer's eye." I've been venturing into doing video with my r5 as well, and hopefully can emulate the smooth transitions & the perfect timing of audio & video you always have. Best of luck in finding that perfect plot of land on which to build. My son & daughter-in-law are trusted house sitters out west and echo a lot of what you've stated of "being in the flow" in the video. Keep it up!

Always liked the look of an aframe and how it blends into the environment. I have only spent a week or so in the Washington rain forest area but it's the ultimate. I don't know if travel will ever get old for me but having a nice basecamp to come back to once in a while to unwind would be awesome.

My God, the houses you sit for are breathtaking! Especially the “container homes”. I’m a city girl and didn’t know those settings existed. We see plenty of mansions but your houses are something…more valuable. I would also feel strangely safe in the middle of the woods in a home built from the solid steel walls of a container. Safe travels!

Grew up in WA....love the Cascades and Olympics....Packwood's always appealed as well as the Leavenworth area or the Methow Valley....have fun with your decision! Been in MT now for 25 yrs....it's where my heart is and better politics. Thanks for the show!

I grew up in western Washington. After getting married I have lived in Phoenix, and central Florida. Both beautiful, warm and sunny areas. I have always had a strong pull to WA and we have been back here for 17 years. This has always been home to me for all the reasons you described. I love the seasons, but winter with the cold, dark and wet has always been my favorite! The right spot is waiting for you to find it.

I know that everything is so impermanent, transient, fleeting :) After working as a busy doctor for many years, I chose a simple life of meditation, traveling volunteering and living with less possessions. I love your honesty, humility and beautiful storytelling in all your videos. It really comes from your heart which makes all the difference. Christian, really enjoyed your video and listening to your dreams and goals. It was great hearing what’s in your heart and where you want to consider home base. It also sounds like you had a wonderful relationship with your grandfather which unfortunately I only knew my grandparents so a short time in my life before their passing. The advice from your grandfather was sound advice and you should think about it. I lived in Washington for many years before I moved to Ohio but I missed Washington a lot which one day I will return.
