Cozy Winter Clothes from History! Medieval hoods and hose! 

The other thing about real fur that is relevant to Canadian level winters is that it resists or does not clump/gather/build up snow. Making it more effective at keeping you warm than plastic/oil products. As you said, where the fur comes from and avoiding conspicuous consumption, are keys to the decision of using fur.

Yay for historical winter clothes content! Sometimes I get frustrated over the lack of winter clothes content on this platform, in my definition of winter. So good to see someone dealing with winter in a similar climate to mine. Greetings from Finland! I also liked your thoughts about the use of fur. You put it to words very elegantly. You seem to have quite similar viewpoint to me on that subject. I have some medieval hoods and cloaks, but haven't actually used them for historybounding. (Yet.)

totally agree on the fur choice, wasting good material that already exists isnt gone solve anything

angela clayton also only uses second-hand fur so that these items are used and loved rather than wasted. i remember muffs from when i was a little kid--they were insanely warm compared to any gloves i ever had. i hope you sewed a loop on yours so you can wear/carry it on your wrist as you take your hand(s) out.

I love that you are giving a clear voice to real cold weather. It’s all well and good to say fur or wool is bad but when you live somewhere that regularly is at -40 and can go colder. It’s not like you can just say I will wait till it warms up. Life still goes on. There’s no option for waiting. The synthetic fabrics are not as warm or environmentally friendly. It’s just a fact. Lots of thrift stores are starting to put out damaged fur coats that can be reused for other projects. It cuts down their tipping fees (dump charge) and adds to their profit so everyone wins. Aside from all of that there is never one solution that works for everyone everywhere. There are too many factors for a single answer. Thanks for a balanced view that takes in some of the options for cold weather wear.

Great discussion of using antique furs. Back in the 90s one of my environmental studies professors posed that very question to us - more ethical to use used fur or buy a new polyester fleece. It was the era when PETA was really on the anti fur campaign so we all thought duh...polyester fleece. Then we broke down all the environmental costs associated with making polester fleece. And now, in recent years we have learned even more the true costs of polyester and the harm it does as it degrades. I'm still squeemish at the thought of fur, but if I had need of something that warm, I would absolutely try to source a used fur.

When waiting for a bus at - 30° my biggest concern were my toes😬 I could never understand why shoe manufacturers believe that you need more fur at the calf instead of at the foot🙄 and don't start me on thin plastic soles... Eventually I stopped caring what I looked like during winter (NB: I'm in my mid 20s and prefer a classy feminine style) and bought the ugliest puffiest fishing boots. Vulcanized rubber and removable inserts rock😁

My mother's older brother, by 19 years, was married but never had children so my siblings and I were always given very sophisticated gifts that were not informed by the trends of the time. When I was 8 and my sister, 6, we were both given a Kate Greenaway book and a mink fur muff on a wondrous and wide silk ribbon. Though Vancouver winter's aren't that cold, I refused to go anywhere without that muff. I love recycled fur and use it alot for medieval cloaks, collars and cuff on woolen gowns and I even upholstered a footstool with coyote fur. I love this video and can't wait for next week!

I love that it's winterizing for a cold winter! The few videos I have seen about winter historical clothing was normally for far milder winters than in Canada. This year will be my husband's first full Canadian winter as he comes from the Netherlands where it rarely got lower than 5C! Luckily we bought him a good quality down coat and a decent wool coat for chilly weather (before Sears shut down). Can't wait for part 2!

Love this and the choice ro "upcycle" the old fur. I too live well above the 45th parallel and understand cold winters. Thank you for the start of your winter apparrel.

muff are much need for canadian winter - 30 and wind chill make for a ... interesting wait for the bus and the hope that no one catches you dancing to keep warm. but just think if u add a pocket inside it a eye catching purse.

I have a rabbit fur muff that I bought 2nd hand. it has a nice zippered pocket on the inside for decent sized items like a cel phone or Money.. etc. It is a very vintage piece but a great pocket. It is part of my Victorian Caroling outfit. and the mink stoles/collars that I wear are from vintage items. They were meant to last. They keep you warm. and the animal did not die in vane/vein/vain.

Ooooh, as a fellow chilly Canadian, you know what else would be pretty wonderful in the muff pocket? A USB-rechargable handwarmer. This is my personal muff dream anyhow. I often slip them in my mittens because I have perpetually cold hands.

Nice! I have mostly switched to wearing dresses & skirts so its nice to see options for keeping warm. And I think the fur piece looks good! I particularly like the reuse of the pocket! I actually have a huge old vintage coat made from sheepskin, (synthetics being Evil for the ocean with all that plastic microfiber stuff) and some of the pieces are not as strong as others (perhaps those animals were simply less healthy than others, when they were alive?) so I've had to sew up tears in the same plackets several times now. I find simply using a sharp tapestry needle & doing it by hand pretty easy. Perhaps it would be less frustrating to work with old vintage fur pieces slowly by hand as a back burner project? Down here in Mass. I see quite a lot of fur coats in the thrift shops. Also, its kind of nice to hear a vegetarian who isn't really judgy about the meat/fur thing. I've tried vegetarian eating a couple times but due to health matters/body chemistry it just doesn't work for me. So I just do my best by eating only meat from small farms, humanely sourced. Not everyone can be healthy on a veggie or vegan diet. Though for sure it would be nice if they could! Anyways, all that veggie bit to say, that sometimes I feel concerned about the lack of fur coats on the market. What I mean is, that if we humans Are going to still eat meat, I feel that the entire animal should be made use of, and not wasted. So ...where are all those cow hides going nowadays? Total digression I suppose as cow hide would make an odd looking hand muff . :)

If you go into Asia you’ll find different winter clothing. An easily found variety is the winter Russian army winter uniform during WWII. If, memory serves me right, this style goes back several hundred years.

I love the cloak! As a fellow Canadian I've tried looking into some of the more historical winter wear. The quilted petticoats are amazing! I can't wait for the next video.

I agree with you on the use of antique/vintage fur. I'm a vegan for environmental reasons, and antique fur articles just seem much more sustainable than synthetic alternatives. If I needed fur for a project, I would also consider purchasing it from an Indigenous trapper, with the understanding that the project would be something I would wear/use for as long as I could. I didn’t realize you are Canadian! Me too! I also wonder about winter solutions for “real” cold weather. I will be looking for the next instalment. I am working on a cloak made of heavy wool and lined with wool flannel. I have struggled with the neckline because the fabrics are too heavy to layer into any kind of seam finish. I made a wee collar and then just sewed a strip of bias cut outer layer over it to finish the top edge. Now to sort out a hem and add pockets to the inside! Then it will be done. The idea of making a hood to layer underneath the hood is freaking genius. I have enough fabric left to give that a try. I might take apart my collar and just turn the two layers together for a simpler finish as well.

I inherited my mother’s fur coat (1960s). It is wonderful and I have no intention of giving it up. It has tear in it, and I think I should take it to a furrier for repair rather than attempt to do it myself.

With you on the fur issue. If we are to kill animals for food, we should use every single last scrape of the animal and do it with respect.

The fitted English gown in the Tudor Tailor almost makes a warm woolen trench coat which I I love for our snowy weather

I have a children's sized muff (approximate year 1900 or so) and it has a large hidden pocket inside, and this thing has been my holiday party accessory go-to for years.

There’s this seller I go to at my monthly ‘Trade Days’ she sells primarily vintage and antique fur clothing items. We had such an interesting conversation this last time I saw her about the ethics of New vs Old fur- ethical sourcing and then impact of poly furs on the environment. It was truly enlightening!

A good tip, to prevent needing to fuss as much when bagging as you put it, is to use a sewing ham. You are trying to go around edges that are curved or shaped and you can better pin places and sew them so that things with the natural bend instead of trying to force it into shape while flat.

I love that you use binder clips! I do the same thing sewing since I have cats, and they like to do their best to stick themselves, or at least me, when I sew using pins. I also hate how some fabrics are too heavy or too stretchy for pinning.

I agree with you on the leather/wool/fur argument .... though I don't think the synthetics really stand-up to wool and leather (never lived anywhere cold enough for fur). Its probably better for the environment for vintage furs to be used and re-used rather than thrown away and replaced with new fur or petro-chemical alternatives. Personally in my current location, winterwear has to keep out the damp - I actually prefer my wool coat and hat in light rain to "proper" waterproofs.

So glad I stumbled across this! I have just gotten into sewing, and trying to find good "Canadian winter" approved apparel has been challenging. I tend to hunt down reference recommendations from (far more experienced than I) historical costumers and sewists online, but most of them live in far warmer climates than Maritime Canada. I am very much looking forward to part 2!

Rosie is somehow less bad than what my cats do. I had 1 kitty that loves to grab the fabric and roll around till she was a snug little burrito. My current set of kitties enjoy getting under the fabric while the other pounces. Then the fight is on!... Followed by a sprawling nap.😣😕😆 😻 I agree with your frugality and use of old fur. I find its handy to use a chopstick or popsicle stick to tuck/ hold the fur while machine sewing.

The front panel on that hood calls to me. It sings a siren song of "Decorate me. Embroidery or weave..."

The building a wardrobe that both meets our love of history and the function of our northern winters has too my my current endeavor. Most typical modern fibers do not combat the need of hard wearing items in potentially -40*. The current project are knitted mitts out of a llama and merino yarn. A hood if too on my list. Along with wool skirts, quilted petticoats, wrap shawl, and other delights. Slowly complying footage to upload these creations to inspire other such kindered spirits.

I’m doing some of this. I wear tights so I don’t need to sew any but I am going to buy a pair of fleece lined tights for next winter. I have a fingerless glove pattern and I’ll buy a used mink from Etsy to make fur gauntlet cuffs. I saw a German Renaissance dress maker do it and they fold over for an instant muff while keeping my hands free for a cane or walker. I haven’t made the AD cape because Capes don’t look great on me. However, I realized the bodice portion looks similar to the knit wrap popular in Outlander for the female characters. So I may play with that. My next couple jackets will be a ‘60’s style bias collar jacket and make a lightweight spring/fall jacket out of the tea gown pattern from Black Snail. Someone in Susan Khalje’s sewing group made an opera dress in a similar style. I want to be able to wear it more often. I have a knit ear warmer that I made years ago and I’m going to make a sewn one to match my gloves. So, I’m history bounding but not as far back as you are.

Such cute styles! Too bad it never really gets cold or wet enough here in the desert to wear them. Our winter fashion here is probably what you Canadians wear in the spring. I love that you recycled the fur into something that will get use again. I think it's more disrespectful toward the animals to destroy a perfectly good already-used pelt.

This is a GREAT VIDEO!!! You won't waste fabric! (which I have seen so often on these types of episodes.) and Now You use REAL FUR!! YAYY!!!! The furs are the best source of warmth keeping and insulation. If you are UPCYCLING a Beautiful piece>> You are honoring that animal and also keeping in contact with why you were making this in the first place. Sorry. I understand that the military came up with Gortex and there's also Thinsulate. But they also employ Rabbit fur lined gloves while on maneuvers... BECAUSE IT WORKS!!! I buy leathers and furs to upcycle into many items that will be cherished and well cared for for what they are meant to be. Not a Fashion statement... But A wonderful Warmth Accessory. I don't think this can also apply to the Sporans I've made of Upcycled fur.... But that's another story.

I’m a vegetarian and I do use second hand leather (I don’t buy new one), so I don’t see a problem with re-using second hand fur. Not using it would just be a waste. But personally I cannot touch real fur, it feels slimy, and it gives me weird goosebumps, like fingernails on the blackboard.

I wonder how you keep the hose from falling. Did you add some elastic or attach them to some form of suspender belt ?

And the Canadian prairie (Sask) winter is basically why I am hermit and don't really wish to historical bound outside of the house....if I had a different job slash home more.

for what fur to use, there is still a bit of a debate on what pieces should be kept whole, and which pieces are alright to cut up? it really depends. I made a goat rod-puppet out of some old coats from my aunt's theatre shop in Nova Scotia, all with twill tape and a whip stitch
