The CPKC Final Spike Steam Tour is commemorating the merger between the Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern Railroads, which was approved by the STB on March 15, 2023. The Steam Tour, features the recently rebuilt Hudson type 4-6-4 #2316, called The Empress. The locomotive was built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in December 1930. Two EMD FP9A locomotives, 1401-4107, are on the train as assist locomotives. The train is making a tour of the system between Calgary and Mexico City.
In this video, you'll see the train at different locations on the old SOO Line railroad between Minot, ND and Glenwood, MN. Enjoy!

I wish someone had thought to bring a Canadian flag to wave for them. Nice of our neighbors to the north to send the Empress south for a visit.

This is absolutely outstanding. The photography is just incredible captaining not only the train but those puffy clouds and the flat and beautiful North Dakota landscape. I love those old Canadian Pacific pusher engines and the brown and yellow paint scheme they used back then. Damn that would fun sitting in that Dome car going along for the ride. Much appreciate for taking the time capturing this and posting.

@@antonchigurh7227 Thank you very much! More of a diesel fan, I too love those old FP9s. I would love to tour the interior of the train, but like you would love to ride them especially the dome car. I saw another film of this train and the photographer was invited on board. He filmed the interior of three of the cars. I could spend a lot of time in the lounge with a full bar!

The whistle on that engine sounds like an electric air chime. Wonder if that was the sound they were trying to copy?

Forget the details but she has two, both steam. One up front basically on/off and a more traditional quillable one nearer the cab which is nosier for the crew- hence the usual use of the one up front.

Thank you very much! Still plenty of chances to see it out on the road if you can swing it.

That sounds like an electronic whistle, not steam. Obviously, there are the occasional air horns, but why not use the steam whistle?

There are two whistles on this locomotive, one near the cab which is definitely steam, the other at the front of the locomotive behind the stack. I'm told it's also steam, but I agree it sounds electric but when it's sounded, steam emits from it. I've heard them use both, but most often they sound the whistle at the front of the locomotive instead of the one near the cab. Probably a crew preference to save on their hearing!

Who is the idiot that keeps blowing the horn on the rear car? Do we really need to hear that?

There were CP officials on the train, it seemed everytime they saw people out to see the train they blew the horn at them. Not too much you can do about it.
