My thoughts on the new steel. We'll see what happens when we give it the BBB treatment.

Dude, you need to make more videos about Steel. I learned more in this one video than I have watching five other videos of other nerd knife guys who try to be all proper and nice. This video is amazing. Good job.

I would love to know what kind of computer programs are used by the steel industry to predict what properties they think it will have . After testing the steel and looking back on those predictions and improving the programs . I'm sure it's a process but it's always fascinated me . Being an old welder , pipe fitter and plumber all my life . I've admired the old blacksmiths and blade smiths . Watched an old video on Wootz crucible steel . I've always considered it an art as well as science . I think it's awesome that someone like you is learning this stuff . I'm sure many have helped you but your passion will carry you far . It bodes well for the next generation of knife makers . I look forward to your videos .

I enjoyed reading up on the history. Understanding why the decisions were made in the past is kinda cool. For the most part I've enjoyed the production samples I own in s35vn in respectable bte geometries. No saving grace when that is out of hand. Fine grain structure is enough for me to put my excited pants on for s45vn.

Thanks a lot for yours videos, i like them very much. It seams that steel makers finally get to fine microstructure and not only to tones of carbides. How good can perform old steel with fine structure show 12C27 . If S45vn has a good microstructure and high HRC that will be great. It will be interesting to se what HRC is on Spyderco knives .

REALLY helpful video. Has anyone figured out the Rc Spyderco is getting from it? I just received mine and its got an angry aggressive edge...love it. Splitting hair from the factory. So much better than say the CRK S35VN that CRK offers from the factory which is just so uninspiring. Looking forward to your findings as time goes.

LongTime knife collector (was a scout in my youth) but am just recently starting to learn deeply about steels. So in all my years of using knives, at the top of my priority is TOUGHNESS with RETENTION and/or SHARPENABILITY interchangeable in 2nd. Here is a newbie question, if youre saying that the END PRODUCT S45VN of the different knife companies will be different due to their differring heat treatments, (dare i say) what makers/companies are those that have good heat treatment. Or putting it differently, what knifemaker makes optimal use of CRUCIBLE steel? Thank you sir

Looking for a fixed blade at the moment, and looking into the different steels, what's best for my applications, etc. It's like a roller coaster. Lean this way, find new info, lean another way, new info, on and on and on. Nonetheless, it's interesting. I love the details.

I am thankful for your explanation of what's going on in this new steel. I'm excited to see what custom makers do with this steel and the end products of them experimenting. Overall, where would you place this steel as to edge retention? Is this going to be in the Elmax realm? Obviously it is an upgrade to S35VN but, how far of an upgrade? Comparable to M390/204P/20CV? From what I'm gathering, this should be somewhere near M390 but, easier to sharpen?
@FearNoSteel
@FearNoSteel 4 года назад
its a tier above elmax for me
@FearNoSteel
@FearNoSteel 4 года назад
the big issue is you'll apply that to production knife and we have no idea what hardness and HT they'll run, so it only applies to my work.
@luddy2009
@luddy2009 4 года назад
@@FearNoSteel Sure, that's understandable. I take all of this with a grain of salt because we cannot compare different products across different makers. If anything, I like to base my research off of one custom maker and the same HT process across different steels.

@patrick_g350 4 года назад
As discussed on Bladeforum : what are the advantages compared to M390 at 61.5 RC? According to Larrin's article M390 is more wear resistant, more corrosion resistant and at least equal in toughness.
@FearNoSteel
@FearNoSteel 4 года назад
The Carbides are finer, the m390 might only be tough because it makes soft gummy clumps of Delta ferrite in the microstructure due to the HIGH chromium,raw toughness and edge Stability are different things. This s45vn should be able to run harder and have a more stable matrix but less wear resistance since m390 has more M7C3 volume. There a lots of details you can pick up on in the article on s45vn. You can read about Delta ferrite in the H1 steel article if you don't know the difference between martensite, Austinite, ferrite you can find all that information on knifesteelnerds too.
