A little tip. Wet sand it with 1200 grit. Polish to a inconsistent gloss. Meaning, leave it dull here and there. Then finish check it. Be very careful not too go overboard wet sanding. Your essentially wanting a worn look. So wear it down. Just a tip. It worked incredible on my Tokai LP.
Just be careful not to melt the wax your pickup is potted with. You could end up with a microphonic Pickup. Also remove any of the plastic parts just in case the heat warps them.
A soaked Tea bag works in place of the coffee. But if you want to keep with a dry method black snap line chalk works the best its a very fine powder, also works aging a neck , rub it on your fret hand and play ....
What’s up that was a great video! I’ve always been wondering how to do that. Anyways could I get the link for that sticker, or where you got it? Thanks!
Nice work man! My pelham blue junior came with natural checking thankfully. But I can't deny the temptation is there to finish off the whole thing haha!
I love that nobody cares about the PJ sticker, but so many ask about the pinup sticker. Probably because their last great album was in 1998. They live on their foundational success legacy at this point.
I also have a 2011. Whoever had it before chipped some spots which doesn’t bother me but you can see where they had stickers and it reacted with the yellow. That bugs me. I thought of getting it refinished but I might nut up and try this. I’ve got 8 LPs I think but this is the only one I’d dare try it on
So I have a guitar I really want to check but I don’t think this way does a very good job for one reason. When the guitars naturally check the lines are 99.9999% always horizontal across the guitar (perpendicular to the string direction if horizontal doesn’t make sense). Do you think it came out looking “real” or just came out looking different? Cool vid regardless! Thanks!
I'll admit to being surprised that the lines came out horizontal. That being said, I've since seen pics of plenty old guitars with prodominantly horizontal check lines.
Yes I guess so! Sorry I was imagining the guitar the other way. I've seen plenty of pictures of old guitars with the lines going the same direction as the strings too
Nice! I have the very same guitar assuming it is a 2011 model, and the nitro finish started to crack naturally in the back and in some parts on the front, also the finish in the corners started to fade from all the rubbing from playing, I would have not done it artificially but gotta respect you for doing it haha great video tho!
I have a love/hate opinion of guitars with a "reliced" or checked appearance to the finish.. Genuine checks in the finish of a old guitar due to years of play and moving gig to gig is cool. You know that the guitar has a history and endless stories.. However to pay hard earned money on a guitar, then essentially ruin the finish so a new(er) guitar looks old and worn hurts my wallet and stomach to see. also in my opinion makes a guitar a fraud.. If it's your thing, then go for it. It just isn't for me.
Dipswitch Demos sorry dude I saw after you’d mentioned, would buy but pricey and coming from Canada :(. Does the transfer come off when you cleaned it?
I don't see why this appealing or why. I hate old looking things - especially when they're brand new. I just buy mine brand new and inflict my own damage. This way it ages naturally and it looks better and has better flow and I know where all the dings came from. Relic guitars are horrible since the don't really look convincing after owning guitars with real natural wear and aging.
