Can you turn a cheap £150 guitar into a professional, road-worthy, custom-shop-style guitar for £500… ALL IN? Well over the next couple of months, that’s exactly what we are going to find out. In each episode of this guitar build challenge I am going to change, mod and quite frankly butcher each individual part of this Harley Benton and hopefully make something really special. All the way from the pickups, hardware and even the finish. But I had to set myself a budget, because otherwise this whole thing could get out of hand quite quickly. So I have £500 to spend including the guitar!
In this episode I will be completely stripping off all of the factory paint, refinishing it with some proper nitrocellulose and finally attempting my very own custom-shop relic.

Glad to find your video. I’m doing the same thing with a cheap Guitarfetish Tele body. I even chambered it. I am now in the middle of the second color because I’m going to do a color over burst relic. Thanks for sharing.

Cool video. I actually built this kit. I was pretty happy. I cut the headstock myself. Kept the kit bog standard so far. Painted it in powder blue nitro and that turned out ok also. I’m pretty sure it came with P90s or something like that. It sounds and plays great.

This is awesome. And the production quality and commentary are all top notch. Tempted to try this at some point. Am I crazy or did the actual paint job not take too long? I feel like I’d seen videos before where people took weeks to cure the finish etc but I don’t know why that’s necessary. This look awesome.

From your experience, do you think you could have stained and varnished that body rather than painted it ?

I see that you didn't clear coat. Is it not necersary? Im planning to do exactly this to my strat but I can't find anyone who talks about whether or not to clear coat at the end. Im thinking that an aged 'relic' would of worn through most of the factory clear coat anyway. Might help to make the paint fade better. Cheers

A bit late here. Yes clear coat. Check out brad angrove's channel about going guitar finishes with spray cans.

Ha ha click bait it’s shows green and it is not green 😮 lol Just kidding Jackson you did a great job spraying it outside, so luckily no flies landed on it. T cut is awesome ehh, use it on anything that stuff. Also that wadding works too I can’t remember what it’s called, oh yeh, brasso!! Proper English stuffs. Anyhow love from a Brit Toronto. BTW.. So sad about Mike ehh, he was an inspiration for sure 😢

Nice Video, doesnt Harley benton do a plain wood body to finish yourself, so you can save the hassle of removing paint
@JacksonBrooksby
@JacksonBrooksby Год назад
Yep and that would be a great option! I wanted to show it could be done with any old guitar though

The reason for using nitrocellulose is that it is supposed to be more porous to "let the wood breathe". Then you put a waxy polish on there? Seems counterintuitive, but perhaps it doesn't matter in the long run.
@markntexas8265
@markntexas8265 Год назад
FYI every nitro guitar gets waxed in fact he skipped the clear coat and did more of French polish technique remember it composite body glued together with God only knows what

Absolutely wear a respirator when using a heat gun and these highly toxic finishes.There are zero health and safety standards in China & Indonesia, and you could be breathing anything. Having been doing this for a while; If it's already finished, just lightly sand and refinish over the top with nitrocellulose.(Nitro can be applied over polyurethane, but not vice versa.)Fender actually did just this on custom orders, frequently using burst bases as they required better quality wood.On many real relics, you can see the original finish color . If you want to start from scratch, just buy a unfinished body ,- they are inexpensive.Use all nitro products following manufacturers guidelines. Always,- ALWAYS, - protect your breathing.Sanding, spraying , - all of it.Spray in the right temps outside, or in open spaces like porches or garages.All of these products are terrible for your lungs. The nitro naturally relics and ages, and lends itself to all kinds of techniques.I particularly like freezing/heating, to cause finish cracking.( This doesn't work on poly). Successful relicing is all about building up repeated stages,- add, take away, add, take,etc. - slowly incorporating, blending the damage.If you find yourself rushing, - stop and check your head.The result will be only as good as the patience and effort put in.

Clicked off after watching you remove the paint with a screwdriver. Should be a tutorial for what not to do...🙄

Heat gun is pure danger. Chemical stipper is USELESS. Use a ultra sharp knife that has a thick, blade. Set the knife on the surface & pull it toward yourself. The paint comes off easy, dry & leaves no scratches, no burns. Sand the body now to make it perfect and proceed.
