Hands down, I am a minimalist concerning people. Nothing can clutter and complicate your life more than people. I can do the social sprint but have no interest in the social marathon. The mailboxes for my block are in front of my house and I can be as friendly as can be with neighbors I meet there, but virtually none of them have ever been in my house and never will be. My life is my own and I like it that way.

Hi Jen, I’m fairly new to your podcasts, but I knew I’d struck gold when I saw you for the first time. My husband of 53 years died suddenly last year. I love where I live on acreage with trees and garden…good neighbors…very quiet area. “Friends” told me a widow of 81 surely must plan on selling and moving because it would be too much for me. I’m not moving, but I did divest myself of friends. I’ve learned so much from you as I’ve struggled to accept and adapt to being alone. As an introvert, I’m learning to love being here with few people in my life. You have addressed so many of the practical issues I have faced down and I look forward to hearing from you. Because I have limited ability to walk, I have an electric cart and my vegetables and flowers are all in containers. Your vocabulary, excellent presentation and joy in your life have helped me to find joy (a tiny bit at a time) in my new life. Thank you so much. PS I adopted a marvelous big wild rescue cat who has made all the difference. Gave me a reason to get up and get on with life.

Thank you so much. I love the smell of a book as well and can even identify a book from another by this. As I don’t have any relatives ( I am a child born in between two generations, don’t have a spouse or children) I can only rely on my own. I didn’t know I did this throughout my life. Referring to people in my life I can step back and ask myself “ wait a minute..” I don’t need things anymore to create kind of safety. It’s not safety, it’s a burden. I am on my way downsizing ( I am a collector, who has not been allowed to give away anything ) and won’t keep things dear to my mother or anybody else but those you mentioned as valuable to me. If I can’t make a decision right now, I leave the item in my sight, makes decisions more easy and the result of it more valuable- to me. As someone used to be giving throughout my life in order to be “ right”, I’m changing. I used to be a worrier, mostly about others. I learned within the last eight months where this comes from. I am glad to have found the origin. Change doesn’t come overnight. At first I called myself a “ failure” but realized this what I was thought of by my parents and my two husbands in order to control me. I was so tired and couldn’t manage anything. Changed . I am good towards myself and think of me I am more than simply sufficient which I never have been before. The good thing is I couldn’t be totally broken down. I am 67 by now , a long journey of misunderstanding. The person I don’t want to miss anymore is- me.

Pam here…..you encapsulated the essence of what minimalism should be. Emotional minimalism probably the most vital. Always boggles my mind the drama and chaos that people invite in to their life and then go on to create themselves. Choosing to discard negativity, gossiping, or even insinuating bad motives or intentions of others is so freeing. So many I know are caught up on ‘overthinking’ disease….where they can’t stop ruminating about what others may think about them or that everything another says or does is a ‘message’ to them. Thanks for your succinct analysis of what truly creates minimalism in your life!

I'm slowly working on being more of a minimalist. I'm in my upper thirties and had previously never taken stuff to goodwill.....never gotten rid of anything!!! In the last month, I've taken 5-7 boxes (mostly of my daughters old clothes) to goodwill. I want to be in better control, my house is so cluttered with stuff I don't need or use. Slowly but surely I'm gonna get there

Lmbooooooo Jen! I just said yeah Stacy, you are a recycler and not a minimalist. My home is almost 4000 ft.² and I promise you that there may be 10 items in my entire house that were brand new. I never buy anything brand new. I bought oops paints from the paint store for a dollar a gallon to paint the inside of my house. I got exceptional paint for pennies. I use all of it to refurbish furniture and give to my family and friends. I think it is so wasteful to keep filling up the dump with perfectly good items that just needs some care. I buy all my books used. My library sells books for $1-2 dollars each. I’m with you on getting the books, because eventually this electrical grid is going to crash. Anybody that is self-aware can feel it. Change is coming. I don’t do it because I’m trying to be thrifty, it was just the way that I was raised. We didn’t have a lot of money. And I’m so grateful for it now. I really appreciate you posting your videos early because I am always up at the crack of dawn. I agree it’s all about quality and the old stuff is definitely better! Thrift stores are the bomb! Have a great day Jen and all others!

Hi Jen I totally agree with everything you said. Frankly, I never thought of myself as a minimalist. But, hearing what you had to say on this topic has made rethink that. About 15 years ago I decided for my own peace of mind to "simplify" my life. I have taken steps in many ways to do that. Getting rid of stuff that wasn't serving any purpose and/or had little or no meaning to me anymore. But, thoughtfully considered the things that did. I kept those and got rid of the rest. I shop very little these days I choose something I do need and/or has value to me. I thoughtfully pared down my schedule and put some things into life that brings me pleasure or makes me smile. I am far more comfortable and peaceful in my home now. I also re-evaluated the people and relationships in my life. I exited or excised those relationships because they were yoo draining or toxic. The people in my life now, add value and bring me joy. So, after pondering tour words I came to the realization that simplifying my life was a form of minimalism. So, yep, guess I'm in that camp after all. 😂 Thanks so much for another insightful talk. 😊 By the way, that is one of the main reasons I faithfully watch your vlogs. Because, they add value to my life and so do you. I do try to thoughtfully comment every time which I hope adds some value to your life, as well. Hope you have a great week and see you next week. 😁❤️🙋 --Paula in Ohio USA

As someone who has followed the minimalist movement for many many years, I must say I have rarely heard such a logical and convincing approach to the topic as yours! And I certainly identify with you on the book issue. People who say having 30 books should be enough have always puzzled me… And thanks for your words on people who love „nick nacks“ (as we called them when I was a child) - I think I understand my husband better. It‘s a shame I live on the other side of the globe from you (EU) - I‘d love to run into you in the woods with our dogs.

Great video! It hit home for me and opened my eyes even more. I have an aging narcissist (sick) in my life. He is the most negative person I've ever met. I'm about to watch this video again!❤

As a single, solo, of 57 years, I have found a useful, and minimalist, set of pots. It’s a double boiler/steamer. That gives you two pots that nest into each other, plus another pot with holes in the bottom that nests into either pot. They don’t take up a lot of space in a cupboard. Add to that, a frying pan, and you’re all set!

You’re absolutely correct in stating minimalism is about control. I wonder if you were to ask minimalists if, during their younger years, they felt they had no control over anything in their lives, they were dismissed, put down, pushed to the side, always felt second best, how many would say yes. It took me six decades and an excellent therapist to realize the “why”s of my life.

I went through a people-weeding phase! I've also thinned out my wardrobe, big time. I give things away, usually to charities. And thus year I mostly succeeded in simplifying my garden flowers (the annuals) allowing more room in pots for the few to grow and expand on their own, not over stuff them! I took a week long, solo van camping trip and tested out the "one fork /one spoon/one plate/one pot/one pan" thing - and loved it!!! Thanks Jen.👍😎🇨🇦💫

I also been watching video here on RU-vid about self-care. For example, Diane in Denmark on some of her Friday videos called weekly planning self-care gives four self-care assignments/ideas that one can choose from for the week and in those videos she mentioned ideas like spending time in nature, creativity, new recipes, listening to music. Also Mariane Cresp mentioned in her boost your mood video about creativity and music.

I used to have lots of books, but decided to downsize due to the availability of books online. However, electronic books can be “disappeared” or changed. Now I think it is inportant for physical books to be maintained and passed along to future generations. We have put too much trust in the “just trust me” people. Technology may turn out to be a curse.

Thank you for this wonderful video. I subscribed to 3-4 minimalist channels for the last 6-12 months and recently unsubscribed from all of them. Like you, I have many passions: reading, gardening, baking, sewing, quilting, collage, knitting, needlework. Pursuing my interests requires quality tools, materials, space and financial investment and time. A blank space that reveals nothing about an individual gives me anxiety; a space filled with warmth, lovingly cared for, with objects that reflect the owner’s personality and interests piques my curiosity, whether it’s books, art, houseplants, antiques, travel mementos, etc. I may be a maximalist, but a discerning one or an intentional minimalist. As long as you are being true to you, no labels are needed.

Didn’t realize it, but this is my style of minimalism. And for the things that bring me joy but have no purpose (like my collection of pig things) I put the collection in a container. So I have a pickle jar full of wee pig statues. I have a bag full of bubble wrap collected from things sent to me, I have a box of wool socks, and a dresser of yarn. This is my minimalist.

Thank you Jen for another great video and insight. I agree that many people's definitions of minimalism will be different from others. I personally find having a lot of "stuff" adds a lot of "static and noise" to my environment when I am looking for clearing and clarity. I have zero problem decluttering things that don't serve me but I do like to keep things that as Marie Kondo would say, "bring me joy"-as long as it's not looking cluttered and claustrophobic to me. I like books, but I do clear out ones that don't have some personal meaning to me after awhile. I do have a few I have kept for many years. Funny enough, the book that I have owned the longest is a book by Elaine St. James called, "Living The Simple Life" (1996) which I happen to be about 80% through re-reading 😂. We may have different views on book collections, but I stand united with you on kitchen implements 🤣 and it's all 100% okay because we are bringing ourselves happiness through what minimalism means to us.

I am grateful my husband and I have the same taste and he does not have a collection of anything lol I pretty much have a cottage core look in our home. It was not intentional, but just ended up this way. I am an artist and appreciate original works of art from other artists too. So our home is mostly of art and items from our parents who are not here anymore. But not a lot of things, just meaningful items to us.

Also, I have books in every room and I’m definitely not letting any of them go. I have always loved books. Other things I’m learning to let go of, but books do smell lovely.

Thank you for a meaningful video. I (woman, 57) recognize a lot of myself in what you are saying. Going through a decluttering of my home, your kind of minimalism is close to what I am striving for. By the way, you actually can buy a microwave that lasts for 30 years. I got mine in 1993 and it is still working perfectly fine.

I’m not sure why RU-vid suggested one of your videos to me maybe because we’re close to the same age… But I really like your content and, for some reason, I have binge watched most of your videos today. 😂 Good job. 🎉🎉

I absolutely LOVE this episode! Especially when you talked about removing a negative person from your life (we can do that??) All of us either fondly related or gratefully learned something from what you shared. For me, it was both. ❤ Thanks!

My place is pretty minimal. I have all of the things I want around me, but it's not cluttered. The strange thing is when I have my washing hanging up over chairs and a pile of books and papers on the table, I feel more relaxed. It's like I can see that a human (me) is existing and living in the space, proof that I'm here. Giving myself a quieter life, with fewer people in my orbit has given me more peace of mind than anything else.

I'm a happy maximalist, LOL, but I think your minimalist definition (pretty much) works for me, as well--because everything I have brings me joy. I'm sitting at my kitchen table right now, looking over my very full family room, and can honestly say that every single thing in it (except the God-awful, ugly brown couch I got coerced into purchasing when our last one finally broke down after 15 years and will be replacing as soon as $$$ permits) brings me great joy, sparks wonderful memories, and has been curated over a lifetime. Everyone in my family is engaged in at least one type of artwork or another, so we have photographs, drawings, and paintings on the walls and in frames on flat surfaces, crafted items and books published on shelves, knick-knacks from events and travels, and collectibles from my many passions and interests. My fridge is COVERED in magnets! :) But they're all meaningful to me. My TBR pile is towering. I have multiple full bookcases in every room, including my complete sets of Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden mysteries, which started me on my path as a reader when I was 8 and are now nearly 50 years old. I have finally, sadly, purged a great many books (to my everlasting regret, but I was out of room), but not those ones. I feel cozy, comfortable, and content, and surrounded by beauty and fun.

Thankyou for such a thoughtful and interesting post. From my pov what you are talking about is more essentialism and mindfulness. There is the essentialism book which is quite heavily business orientated but does look at all aspects of life. I enjoy your confidence. I am only just learning to have confidence in myself. ❤

Good poiint! Minimalism is about control. In psychology, it's called internal locus of control. Basically, you realize you have control, you define it, and you exercise it. You presented this really well! Thank you! (Oh, and bibliosmia. You just taught me a new word!)

Regarding relationships… My former spouse didn’t bring joy so I had to say goodbye to that relationship. I am trying to practice minimalism regarding television watching… Political programs haven’t been sparking much joy lately, so I’m making a conscious effort to turn them off. Thanks for this episode… PS: Gentle Podcaster, methinks you might be a watcher of Bridgerton.

I kind of think minimalism is in the eye of the beholder. I'm very mindful of what I buy, and where it's going to wind up. That wasn't always the case. So true about being around negative people - if you don't have to. Even if they are really nice, I avoid the ones that only want to talk about "gloom and doom", and I also don't want to hear about all of their medical issues in excruciating detail (unless there is context for such information). On a social basis, I prefer escapism such as discussing movies, TV series, music, etc. So, I'm a minimalist in people that I have a choice to be around or not. :) Thanks for another thoughtful video.

You make a lot of good points. For myself, as far as books and how many, I would say my limit would be determined by the amount of space i have for them. For me, it becomes clutter, when they end up in piles on the floor or on every surface. So, I like the "a place for everything and everything in it's place" approach. The same goes for clothes. I am still working on the best capsule wardrobe for me considering my current needs. But whatever I have has to fit in the space I have. When you live in a small space, you have to make choices. The same should apply to larger spaces as well.

Ahem, Wuthering Heights from college? Finallally *completely* fell apart about 5 years ago (heartbroken 😂)...another copy (or two), also falling apart haha! Favourite book ever - and it's not just the story, it's the book and all the memories of where it's been with me, where and when I read it, who I was with... And, I firmly believe if it (whatever 'it' might be) doesn't bring me joy, I don't need it. William Morris was 100% right.

Sometimes you need to take the trash out, look at your area(s), and go, WOW, I can breathe now. Be it persons or things. Great info Jen, and I am with you on the books. Books are like brain candy to me; that was why I was in the printing and publishing industry for so long when it was a craft career.

Hello Jen, a couple of days ago, I came across your channel and realized that a lot of things resonate with me, so I have subscribed. Yes, I am also an introvert, loving QUALITY in everything and everyone, books that still have meaning to me, even those that I bought at the adolescence stage (which was a long while ago), cards and gifts dear to my heart, no matter how old they are. I can wear some clothes for 30 (!) years since they are perfectly clean (I am quite an accurate person), still are comfortable and look beautiful. Cooking is my passion, especially after moving to a keto diet, as a result, I need a bit more kitchen stuff than before, and I simply LOVE it! I make very careful choices about things and people; apparently, I can also be called a minimalist😊. Thanks for your thoughts!
