i taught my mom how to make these over 30 years ago. She LOVED it that the people who she gave or sold them to could never figure it how she made them!
I’m watching this at 2 AM! I haven’t sewed in quite a while but just hearing the sewing machine makes me want to get up and start sewing again. Great video. Thanks for the inspiration!
Last year I sorted out old towels. thick ones which had turned thin - layered they made the perfect batting for potholders. My mother and friends were delighted and I use mine all the time - no special plastic needed, just some thoughtful upcycling. The piggy print is absolutely cute!
I know I’ve commented on your pricing before...you’re very talented and $6.00 isn’t enough to pay for fabric, batting, thread, your time and packaging! I think $10-12 should be the price. If I saw this at a show, I wouldn’t hesitate to pay that and be very happy. Great project and I can’t wait to make a few of these for myself. Thank you for a beautiful tutorial!
I love this idea! I have been using my friend's scraps from her grandmother to make her things, such as table runners, quilts, pillows, and now I can use the leftover scraps to put together some great hot pads for her! She is going to love the variety of items that were all born from her grandmother's quilt pieces. Many thanks for this idea!
I love the pig fabric! It is sooo cute!!!..... And I like how you did the zig -zag top stitching at the end, to secure the fabric on top to the fabric on the back. What a great fast and easy project to sew. I think I'll make a few of these to give away to some friends of mine. Thanks for sharing this project! :)
If you want sharper corners you can leaving your batting to insert and fit inside after you've stitched, trimmed, turned and ironed it but before you top stitch it. Cut the batting a wee bit smaller so it fits inside the seam allowances. This removes bulk from the seam allowances. When you first stitch your seams take a diagonal stitch or two across the corners (which means you do two 45-degree pivots at each corner rather than one 90-degree pivot). You will have a couple of stitches at each corner that line up with the corners you trim off before turning. Depending on the thickness of the fabrics you choose and your stitch length you might need a stitch or two more at the corners.
I’ve been making these for years. I make them in different sizes. Small ones (around 4”) for coasters! Medium ones (around 6”) for pot holders and those get a layer of insulbrite for heat resistants! I never thought of selling them.
Absolutely beautiful. I can tell these are made with high quality fabric. I love these. Great tutorial! Great Christmas gifts. Thanks for sharing! 🐈🌸❤🌷💐
I have done this technique with 5 inch squares for coasters. On those, I don't sew the centers down. You can put the base of a goblet inside and the coaster goes with you.
I like this a lot. I’ve made several phot pads similar to these and will give for Christmas gifts along with my jalapeño cheese dip and tortilla chips wrapped in gift bags. Simple and fun to make. 🎅🏻🤶🏼 🎄🎁
This is such a great project! I'm teaching my 13 year old to sew and now can make some for Christmas. We can use up some material and play with decorative stitches too 🙂
Those are so cute, and you can also use them to put under cold things as well so they don't leave puddles on your table, like pitchers of ice tea etc.Work great.Tfs
I love this! I once made coasters in this way but didn’t think about making bigger ones for hot pads. So I was thinking if you add one more 10x10 and sandwich the batting you could leave off the top stitching and maintain the folded fabric effect! Thanks for sharing 😍🤩😍
I’m not sure what you mean. Are you suggesting adding the additional square and batting when she is doing the second top stitch and then turning your work? Sorry, my tired brain is drawing a blank 🤪
I remember when you made these last year. I'm so glad you did a refresher on them because I've been thinking about making a few. I'm just going to have to find an early craft fair this year because I'm having shoulder replacement surgery on November 20th. I won't be able to use my right arm very much for awhile if I understood the doctor correctly. I was glad to hear your Mom continues to improve. I will keep you both in my prayers. Thanks for Sharing this again with us.
So glad I found your channel! I did one craft fair a couple years ago and sold zilch! I had no idea what I was doing, did not have enough stuff I don't think. So with your channel and advice I hope to do better from here on out! Thanks so much for sharing what you know!
I made one for Christmas party swap n put the layers wrong. Have to watch again. I made with chicken fabric n going to include a recipe for chicken spaghetti. Yum
What a great idea! My mom will love the Thanksgiving set I'll make for her. Seems like we're always short on trivets and these will be so pretty on her buffet.
Ms. Deanna I just made 2 of these. Oh they were so fun to make. I used the heat proof batting and made pot holders. I just love them and can't wait to make a few more. These were so fun and so simple. TY I will share a photo on FB.
I just made one and now I want to make one for EVERYONE! And I showed a friend and now they are looking for your video so they can make one! Inspired! I put my hot pad on Pinterest and linked it you your site so that people know where I got the idea.
I saw your Jun 26, 2018 Craft Fair Idea # 25 about a month ago & tried it as my 2nd sewing project...I love them! I will make a few & try them in my upcoming fairs. Thank you :D
ffstew, the reason it can not be used as a oven hot pad is that it needs a heat insulated piece of batting. You need to put insulbrite in it. It can be purchased at most fabric stores.
Hi Deanna, I’m a new subscriber! A sewer ,quilter and crafter too! Liked your hot pads. I make 4x4 coasters the same way but never thought of the hot pad! How funny is that! Great job, excellent instructor! Tyfs 🤗xx
Top Stitch. It pays ti increase your stitch length to a 3.5 or larger. Your seam stitch length is usually best set at about 2.5. Top Stitch is purely ornamental which is why you can use a longer stitch length.
I guess Im asking randomly but does any of you know a way to get back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb lost the login password. I love any tricks you can offer me.
@Simon Sam I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im trying it out atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
OHHHH, how stinking cute are these!!! I can't wait to make some of these, they look so nice. Thank you for this awesome tutorial Ms. Deanna. Hugs to you friend!!!
Love this idea, looks so easy to make. Just subscribed, you explained everything so completely well!!! I love that you also put a suggested price...now to watch for fabric to go on sale and dust off the sewing machine!!
Im gonna make some of these today - thank you for sharing a super easy item AND I appreciate you telling us what you sell these for - that was going to be my question.
I WISH you would put all your CRAFT FAIR VIDEOS in a play list .... I have been trying to find all your videos on the Craft Fair ideas and I am having a hard time
