Craft Fur Reverse Tied Minnow - Underwater Footage! - Streamer Fly Tying Tutorial

These are basically a craft fur glass minnow tied in reverse, then the fibers are pulled backwards to create a spine along the back of the fly. This raises the materials up a bit and helps keep the body fatter, while leaving the tail thin and flowing. This is a great fly for a number of fish. Tie it on a larger hook for large saltwater fish and freshwater pike, tie it on a smaller hook for trout and panfish. This size is great for freshwater bass, and many inshore saltwater species.

All fly tying videos should be like that - materials list, and pop-ups with what’s being used at each step. Thank you for sharing.

I noticed that tying my craft fur in facing the rear usually leads to a profile that’s usually slimmer than intended. This is an awesome tip to get a little extra bulk and movement. Thank you.

Very good description, materials, & different method. Liked how you layered it. This video, and others of yours, are why you are my main tying channel. I've realized that I need to save up for a rotary vise! I can see variations from this fly. Couple of questions. How would you add color to the sides? Like a red stripe. Crystal flash or the hair? Next, could this be tied & be effective with bucktail? Could you put lead wrapping on it for sinking purposes and what size. The ultra thin size? Great video!
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler Год назад
Ok sorry for the late response to this, there were a lot of questions. Thank you btw, I appreciate it. Rotary is beneficial for sure, but definitely not mandatory. It does help a lot though. You can add color to the sides by adding fiber on the side closer to the top head portion of the fly. Check out my split tail shad for something similar. Yes you can use bucktail but it won’t move as much in the water. Great though for a larger version. Yes you can add lead, size depends on your sinking needs Thanks!

What kind of applicator do you use for the Solarez? That thin applicator really seems to make it easy to apply. The kind of thin Solarez I have is in a small tube and is hard to apply due to the thick blunt end of the tube.

Solarez sells them. It’s their precision tip. I think they are like $2-3 or something

Im new to tying flies. Tied my first streamer last night. Most of the videos Ive watched have the hook down when tying streamers. Is there a disadvantage to tying the streamer with the hook up? Wouldn't having the hook up help with not snagging?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 5 лет назад
There are ways to tie with a hook up, look at some of my other videos. I’ve got a few with hook up. But generally they require some type of weight to counter the weight of the hook curve to make it swim hook point up.
@MeGolf92

Thanks for the reply. Im learning how to tie flies with your videos. Everytime I see a new video Im getting more material. Need more boxes to store my stuff. A rotary vise is next. Looking to get the one you use. Thanks again
@johnbmadwis

MeGolf92 When fishing (and therefore tying) think about where in the water column you are fishing. Top? Middle? Bottom? For example with bass, on top you will be fishing/tying poppers and divers to emulate frogs, dragonflies, and other stuff that plops on or near the surface. Hook should be down for that as it's not going to snag the bottom. If in the middle, you are fishing/tying streamers like this one to emulate baitfish - again, not going to snag the bottom as they are fished in the middle of the water column. If you are on the bottom fishing/tying crayfish, leeches, or sculpins - weird little prehistoric dragon looking things you never knew existed - you will be fishing on the bottom and therefore you may want tie the hook up (1) to avoid snagging and (2) to help hook-ups. As those bottom flies often have barbell eyes, you can tie it to (hopefully) ride hook up. Others may disagree, but even for crayfish/sculpins/leeches, at least half are usually still hook down - just my experience. Crabs and shrimp for bonefish and permit are an entirely different topic on which I know nothing other than it looks fun.

Do you have to have the uv liquid for the head or can you just put eyes on there and so be it
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 года назад
Sure you can, just put a dot of superglue. it won’t look as good and the eyes will fall off with the first strike. But it will work. I have a new video where I review an inexpensive UV light. Look it up. It’s a good price. Solarez has a set of 3 of their UV resins for $10 or so I believe. So I’d recommend getting them. But you don’t have to

Does this fly need to be fished on a sinking line?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 7 лет назад
+Jonathan Zambrano (JZ) depends on where you fish. It won't float though, but it's not gonna sink quick. If your fishing deep, then yes, but most places I fish this I just throw a split shot on a floating line if I need more depth. Also you could do a wrap of lead on the hook shank before tying for some more weight though... if you need

@McFlyAngler

+John Campbell I cannot say it's the same, as both are different. What I can say is that I use solarez cause it's better price, and I think it works great. Each company makes similar products, but are both quality in my opinion. I did a review on solarez, check out that video. It might help.

I have many flys and lures for the fly rod in which I love to use catching many fresh water species of fish. But sadly because of health issues i can’t go as much as I want to . If it’s ok I will share my wonderful designs with you. My papa poppers . I use coral floats from Walmart.take out center of long floats. cut 4 or more sections. cut to fit hook shank tie on glue on , add dressings, rubber legs, paint popper head if you want, white with black tiger stripes going down works great for me, when you quick pull the lure it not only pops but blows air bubbles out back . very much inticeing . my second comel float lure is papas flat boy. cut same type long float, long ways through center, cut out 6or more peace’s . glue hooks in center, paint if choice. put rubber legs in lure, add dressing. when cast they bounce like a rock skipping on the water. hope you enjoy and share . good fishing.
