My dad played congas with Charlie Parker once in Chicago and it was one of the highlights of his life. I grew up hearing and hearing about Charlie Parker.

I have a Bird LP with him playing in his own apartment. Probably my favorite as the window to the street was open and you can hear the City below.

Ken. Finally someone discussed Charlie Parker in the light he deserves. He brought so much to modern contemporary jazz. This will be one boxset that will be in my collection. No these are not the RVG recordings from Englewood but nevertheless in my opinion essential in learning and understanding that this was the foundation for the commonly known greats in jazz. He is truly a Bird flying free in the slipstream of jazz music.

Absolutely right. Charlie Parker is the source the fountainhead. I've also got a bunch of Bird 78s. Phil Schaap spent 40 years keeping the flame.

Preach! Every jazz lover should have some Parker in their collection! Also, I was in NYC two weekends ago for the first time and didn't have time to make it to JRC, but I was able to catch a set at Birdland!

What a great review! Thanks for taking us through the contents of this box, Ken! It's possible that your camera is looking for faces and that's what it wants to focus on, I bet if you hold up the artwork in a way that briefly obscures your face, it will know what you want to focus on!

It so satisfying to listen to someone who is knowledgeable about jazz who also back up his exposure with chapter and verse to illustrate what he is talking about. This channel is worth following and something to kill for. To the new baptists of jazz the channel fill the gap of knowledge due to their recent arrival in the jazz scene. The era of Charlie Parker is the centre piece of jazz to the development and progress of the art and need to be appreciated all over the world by past , present and future jazz collectors. Jazz without Bird would be a nightingale without a song.

It is very sad that today's jazz lovers have forgotten about Charlie and Dizzy and what they did to establish this great music; Not much is ever mentioned about Sidney Bechet either?
@Labor_Jones

it's because Charlie's recordings to most of the people I have heard talked say making a Pristine copy are nearly impossible... I had to order (and got) Hot Peanuts when I was a kid... but it's gone... I'm on my 4th Collection now.

@@DorianPaige00 I buy Charlie when ever I see them, but at least in my parts I don't see Charlie or Dizzy or most of the REAL GREATS and not those who saw and loved and took it from there (Charlie's and Miles and Dizzys) amazing break throughs. I'm not a completest kind of Music listener. I search for the pivotal musicians like Louie or Bill Monroe or any Genre where there are some like DUKE or Hank Williams crack the eggs before them, scrambled them and came up with a new omlette. Thanks for writing :) Peace!

@@Labor_Jones You can't discount the independent and smaller catalog artists. The way I'd recommend building a collection is listening to songs by streaming or radio and then buy what you like. Jazz allows you to build a collection through sidemen. On Discogs you can just click and find nearly everything a bass player played on. With other styles it's labels, songwriters, and producers that you can look for to find more of what you like. When I started out collecting cds in 1996 before streaming, I took a 3 fold approach. I bought focused various artists compilations that had songs from artists who didn't have cds yet but the discs covered a given scene. That gave me variety yet I would still most likely need these discs in the future. Secondly I bought what I thought was hard to find and going out of print. Finally favorites both new and old was the third approach.

I once put on a couple of CDs from the Mosaic 'Complete Dean Benedetti' set as background music while I did some work around the house - endless snippets of Bird solos. I actually got into it after a while. The Savoy and Dial stuff is probably the best Parker, but I do have a soft spot for the 'With Strings' records on Verve...
@nohandle54

I didn't know about this boxset - looks like something I need. I have the Verve Charlie Parker 10" boxset, maybe not the most astounding of reissues, but so nice to have those recordings in one set.

one reason I think Bird is not huge with todays collectors - most of his important recordings were on 78rpm before vinyl was invented - so we are left with a lot of mediocre transfers and compilations. yes, people should be listening to more of him - I've got tons on CD.
@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455
There are dozens of great Parker records on vinyl and not from the 78. I showed just a small handful of them. Even the verve recordings with their sappy strings are great.

@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 yes all great playing - but todays vinyl collectors are who are obsessed with audiophile sound quality arent going for these early recordings.
@derosa1989
@derosa1989 Год назад
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 I think he was referring to the audio quality of recordings made before tape. The early stuff was cut live to 78's, so all the source material for any format today is a transfer from those discs.
@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455
@@VinylRundown absolutely nothing wrong with Fidelity of the early savoy or the record store day Parker of about a year ago. Or any of the Verves. Plenty of fine Fidelity recordings. If any jazz collector limits himself to pretty sounding audiophile Pressings, he needs to throw out all his records and start over. It’s about the music not about the Pressings.

Gotta say, I was going to pass on this offering, but I came across a good deal on this set so I picked it up. To hold out for a possible all analog version of these older Savoy reissues is probably wishful thinking. Also, we have to remember that these were never sonically great recordings, so I can't imagine that a "from files" source is going to be distinguishable from the analog tapes. I have to agree with Ken, these LPs sound great, considering the age of the original recordings. 👽👍

That is an impressive boxset. Too bad all the music is pulled from files. Do you have OGs of any of the LPs in this set to compare (sonically)? Also, are you trying to start a new fashion trend by leaving the XL tag on your shirt? 😉👍
@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455
I don’t have it, but I’m sure Dan the Jazz Shepherd does. Coming from files doesn’t automatically means that sounds bad. The very first set craft ever did, the monk in coltrane set was from files and sounded fantastic. It depends who’s doing the files.
