The Guest Johnny Carson Couldnt Stand
Johnny Carson reigned supreme as the King of Late Night during his 30-year tenure as host of The Tonight Show. While Carson was known for his affable charm and easy rapport with guests, even he had his limits.

They didn't tell the whole story of the Joan Rivers feud. She called Carson sexist but the reason that Carson was so mad at Rivers was that she took a show on Fox opposite Johnny Carson at the same time trying to take his viewers away. That's not sexism. I've been looking for years for a unique episode. Early Robin Williams, great opening act (as usual for R.W.) and Robin is invited to have a seat, and a bit of his hilarious impromptu with Johnny. Next guest is Bob Hope, and it doesn't matter who follows Robin, no one can hope to compete. Now I understand the how & why of this night's show. Robin sits tight when Bob has his time with Johnny, I remember Bob's first line to Johnny as "Thanks alot Johnny". Robin was doing all he could to contain himself, sits still, quiet, clasped hands, but several times throughout Bob's chair time Bob would say something to Johnny and Robin would burst out in a 20 second manic riff, sit back down again, and Bob never knew what hit him, but Bob was, talent wise, hopelessly out classed. Been a lifelong quest hoping to find or run across that bit one more time.

Johnny was one of the classiest late night show hosts ever. I didn't care for his obvious chauvinistic views, but I guess he was from that era. But other than that he said a lot of wise things, and had a lot of wise observations. He also cared about animals very much, which I loved about him. And I remember the show, for some reason, after his son died in the car crash, where he ended the show by showing his son's best photographs, you could see the pain in his eyes and hear the pain in his voice like I'd never seen, and I realized he was a very private person but also very deep. It is sad he had to forego being a family man for his career. But, I still think he was a very smart and elegant man. I don't think any other late night host can hold a candle to him.

I saw Charlie Callas appear on The Tonight Show when Joan Rivers was guest host. Johnny was on vacation that week. He did a funny bit on drums making his signature sound effects. It was clever and he was a surprisingly good drummer. The night Johnny returned Ed Shaughnessy, the regular drummer in the band, performed an identical comedy bit making the sounds we associate with Charlie Callas. Johnny introduced it then laughed and complimented the performance but made no mention of the identical bit being done by Callas the week before. It was very odd and I wondered about it for years. After Charlie Callas passed away I read about the incident when Charlie shoved Johnny. He was banned from appearing on the show when Johnny was hosting. I did as much research as I could and found records of when Callas appeared while Rivers was host and Johnny was on vacation. Anyone officially part of The Tonight Show denied the snub took place. They might have not liked one another much but when Charlie shoved Johnny he was offended and felt disrespected. Johnny had earned the throne as King of late night television and it makes perfect sense that Johnny went out of his way to snub Callas.

Callas was a musician before he became a comic. He started out as a big band drummer. His comedy bits were quite funny for their time (comedy was a lot different back in the sixties) and the notion that Carson didn't like him is bs. I'm sure Carson didn't appreciate the disrespectful shoving but nobody would have appeared on Carson's show more than 50 times if Carson didn't approve of their talent.

when i was stationed a Nellis AFB, on Friday nights, we would go roller skating at this shopping center. after 10pm you had to show you were over 18, as there was a curfew to keep minors of the strip at night. one Friday, Mr Johnny Carson and his wife came there to skate. no one bothered him, and he was very nice to everyone. and bought everyone a drink of their choice, for the way we treated him and his wife. he didn't seem to have any problem making small talk to people from time to time. they were with us for at least two hours, and yes he did some slide of hand, lol. one of my fondest memories from back then.

After watching hundreds of Carson shows, it became obvious that he didn't like guests who did not make the show work. It was basically a comedy show wrapped in a friendly upbeat energetic mood. When film actors or models came on and sheepishly whispered about their current film or project, Carson couldn't stand it, because they were not entertainers, and the show lost energy as the viewers lost interest. He loved energetic upbeat engaging guests who the audience also liked.

I don’t remember how great or not great Bob Hope was on The Tonight Show, but I do recall that he was terrific when entertaining American troops overseas many times, hosting his specials on NBC, and hosting The Academy Awards for many years. His monologues and banter on Oscar nights were outstanding! A true American legend who should not be ostracized for his behaviour on Carson’s show. Johnny should have simply talked with Bob about any issues he had with Hope’s appearances, instead of hiding his frustrations!

I see them showed Jason Bateman as if it were Carson’s son. I remember watching the Carson show with my dad and sister when we were younger. Probably too young to really be watching him lol but my dad would make a bowl of popcorn, one of his favorite snacks, and we would sit there and eat, popcorn, and tell stories that we made up and watch Johnny. The way we would tell the stories was one person would say a sentence or two, and then the next person would add onto it, and then pass it onto the next person. We will go round and round. We would have the craziest made up stories. One of my fondest memories of my father. There’s a lots of them, but that is one that really sticks out in my head. My mom worked third shift so my dad was at home in the evenings with us.

I saw the Carson show in the 70's and during a commercial you could tell he and Freddy De Cordova (the producer) got into a little tiff. I think they resolved it before the commercial ended. Carson was his usual GREAT host but he barely engaged the audience, probably because he was so painfully shy. Still, the best night talk show I've seen. Runner up is Letterman.
