My two worlds collide in this super fun project using vintage book illustrations and polymer clay! With a minimal amount of supplies (less than $20) and no experience needed, you can make beautiful DIY wall hangings, tags Etc. with professional looking results. It's fun, it's creative and it's addicting. Polymer clay bakes in your own oven or a toaster oven, so it's a project anyone can do at home.
This is typical of the type of class I run at Wild Salamander Arts Center & a perfect project to do while stuck inside during a worldwide pandemic. ;-)
I found the images you see on the Public Domain Website:
www.biodiversitylibrary.org
*IMPORTANT NOTE:
YOU MUST USE IMAGES PRINTED ON A LASER PRINTER
USE REGULAR PRINTER PAPER - NOT PHOTO PAPER
If you have an inkjet printer, watch my video and then adapt the project using one of these techniques designed for inkjet printers:
• How to Transfer an Ink...
• Foolproof Inkjet Trans...
• Image transfer to poly...
Materials Needed:
Shape Cookie Cutters
Sculpey original white clay ( I recommend a 1lb box or a minimum of three 2oz bricks)
Images printed on regular printer paper (not photo paper)
Water
Toothpick or straw to make holes and/or pop bubbles in clay
Ceramic Tile (from Home Depot, Lowe's or any big box store)
DuraClear Satin Varnish and brush to apply it
Twine, string or yarn
Optional Materials
Nail Art Stylist or any ball tip stylist
Acrylic Paint - Metallic
Gilding Wax
Cheap Metallic Eye Shadow ( in place of wax)
Beads
Natural Elements with holes drilled in them
BioDiversity Library can be found www.flickr.com/photos/biodivl...

I've created a follow up to this video using this same technique to make Holiday Ornaments and Tags. A FREE DOWNLOAD of images is available too! Come check it out at • CHRISTMAS BOUNTY! DIY ...

This project and class is perfect for Adults and Teens, and I believe a parent could do this with a younger child as a parent-child activity, however this video was not intended as a child class.

Hi Everyone- After over a year of answering amazing questions and receiving incredible support, I really need to address the most re-occurring question. CAN I USE AN INKJET PRINTER? The answer is always going to be NOOOOO! I don't say that in a bratty way, just in the most clear way possible. The way an laser handles ink vs. an inkjet is why this technique works. I've personally troubleshot behind the scenes and every single time it has been the printer! Some people don't know the difference between inkjet and laser and that causes confusion. Please know what kind of printer you have because that will make all the difference. If you don't know what type of printer you have google the make and model number of your printer and ask the question "is my (insert make and model of printer) an inkjet or laser printer. The answer will usually come up. Also Laser printers have big distinct ink trays and a drum...if you don't have that you probably don't have a laser. There's a lot of great content in the comment section from people who have added to this discussion. This is an amazing way to transfer but certainly if you are using air dry clay or have an inkjet it's not for you. BUT having said that, there are videos for transfers using both, so even if you just get inspired to make the project, don't fret, you can still make it, just find the best way to transfer the image for your printer or your clay. Thanks for your comments, participation and support. This class has been so wonderful to share with all of you. xo- Michelle

These came out beautifully!! I was worried that the ink was going to rub off when you put them in the water and wipe to dry. ( also noticed at 2:08 the video repeated itself when you mentioned the brush) But aside from that the inks and print are so pretty! I didn’t think the image could transfer like that. I was so invested in the video I just noticed it’s an hour long, but I did have it sped up. Amazing work! Very crafty!

I don't use these outside but if I did, YES I would varnish all of it. This technique is not for an ink jet, however there are channels that show inkjet methods, so you could apply their methods and this project idea.

Is the clay baked/cured already? Are you working with polymer? I guess not knowing exactly what type of clay you use ...I would say this... image transfer is something that can be applied to all types of clay and substrates, but it takes different techniques to get images to transfer based on what you are transferring to. Knowing it can be done is the first "ah ha" part, then figuring out how to use transfer in your project is the second. If you are a polymer person, then as long as the clay is raw and uncured this should work. If you are working with a different type of clay (air dry for example) you would need to research image transfer with that material. RU-vid has a wealth of image transfer videos for all kinds of materials so hopefully if polymer isn't your medium you will find a transfer that works with yours.

This is absolutely beautiful and one of my favorite tutorials..can you do one where you show how you shaded the edges of the other ones you made and show? I love the darkened edges..do you just blend in some white and brown or copper paint?!

Thank you Miss Mary. Actually my favorite way to do edges is with Gilding Wax. It comes in a tub and you just rub it on. It comes in all kinds of metallic colors and is so easy to add to raw or baked clay. You can find links to the product I use on my Favorites page in the info. box. Thanks for your kind comment, I'm glad you like this project.

I love this! So beautiful! Do you happen to know if it's possible to apply this same concept of transferring images to premo or souffle?
@MichelleRaeLandry
@MichelleRaeLandry 3 года назад
Kristine S of course, both are polymer and would be perfect, just make sure the clay color is light enough to see the image.

These are beautiful! Was wondering if you can do the same technique on air dry clay? TYIA 🤔

I don't know the answer to that... I'd say do some experiments. Maybe there are videos? It would make them lighter that's for sure. Thanks for the question wish I had more info. on paper clay.

Thanks for the video! These are super cute! Do you also seal the edge and back of these with varnish?

I do. I find it protects and it makes the colors pop a bit more.

excelente video ...LIKE.. PLEASE, will the transfer work even on already dried clay?
@MichelleRaeLandry

Once the clay is dry you won't be able to transfer this way...however look up the channel Nitsa Creative Studio ... She is the EXPERT on every kind of image transfer there is. There is bound to be technique of hers that would work.

I love these! Is polymer clay heavy..as in will it weigh down a Christmas tree branch do you think ? Ty!
@MichelleRaeLandry

It doesn’t weigh more than other ornaments… definitely do-able.

I don't work with air dry clay so I don't have this answer... but I believe there are videos on youtube about this. I believe there is a technique, so with that said once you find a way to do it you can still use the project idea. Thanks for watching!

Wow that is amazing. Thank you for showing this technique. I’m in the UK and wondered if there are any free image domains here that you might know of?

You can use the free domains from all over the world...with all the Historic Museums & Universities I’m certain there must be!

Thank you so much for this awesome video. Would you be able to share which laser printer you used? Thanks in advance!

I'm sorry for my delayed response. I have a Brother Laser printer that I bought probably 8 years ago on Black Friday for a few hundred dollars. It's a workhorse and still going strong. I find it to be reliable and I can get off market laser cartridges and I can't believe how cost effective it has been.

Love this video! TFS. Can you bake the air dry clay like this or is it best left to air dry? Never knew to add a bit of water to revive my waxes like those! Thank you for that tip as well. New subbie 🤗
@MichelleRaeLandry
@MichelleRaeLandry 3 года назад
Thanks for subbing! I have never used air dry clay... can you believe it? So I don't have an answer, my guess would be just let it dry as recommended. I'm glad the wax tip worked for you, I use all of mine until the last drop is out of the container. ;-)

If you bake air dry clay it will dry quickly but become cracked and distorted. The issue is that air-dry clay shrinks up to 30% (though I've never experienced more than a couple %) so any uneven drying pulls away from where it's still wet/damp. You can still do this technique, though, just without baking. Most people peel of the paper when they can see the ink had transferred since wiping away the paper with water will reactivate the clay and smudge everything. Hope this helps
