@@3DPrintingNerd 'oh, that part breaks during shipping' - but we haven't fixed it (with a 50c connector) 'oh, the filament path jams all the time' - but that's impossible to access without stripping the extruder... and we haven't fixed that either. Not being funny, for 4 Grand they should have immediately replaced the lot. Not left you fiddling with a screwdriver... almost any Cartesian with dual heads is looking rather competitive, at around 1/4 the price. And pretty much guaranteed to actually work, rather than just guaranteed. . The obvious question. How many other stupid corners have they cut? Cos you've not even done 100 hours, let alone 5000.

I have to say, the comments of people saying they also had problems is really concerning - the problems seem to run way deeper than we were made to believe. I have no doubt they are improving with time, but what happens to the early adopters (who aren't YT'ers and get overnight parts and a full spare machine shipped).
@ScubaDaveCCR
@ScubaDaveCCR 3 года назад
I can tell you what happens. They do everything to make it right! They overnighted parts to me, spent hours on the phone with me. Your Not that special! I got one of the first machines in the US and I had more issues I think then any of you two are having plus crazy firmware issues. I was not trying to pump out a video so I can get paid for it. I took my time... figured out how this machine worked, what the issues were and learned from them. I got this original machine working great with full help from HQ of CB whenever I called. These Flow IDEX printers are great machines, but the learning curve is steep I agree. When I bought my second Flow IDEX I set it up no problems at all, and it worked out of the box. Yes I have 2 now both working 16-20 hours a day.

David Lawrence I was one of the first customers ever that received the Craftbot 3 when it hit the market. I can copy paste what you have written. My first machine was finally exchanged. The second machine then only had a mal functioning stepper motor which was kindly exchanged very quickly. Eversince the printer is working fine. Yes, the printer has a steep learning curve. I would clearly not recommend it to someone that is a total beginner when’re comes to 3D printing (CraftBot 3). If I had the chance I would love to compare it to the new Idex Flow generation. I could really tell which improvements have been implemented in comparison to the CB3. But as I am a small RU-vidr I don’t get that chance as I can’t afford a second machine. Their problem is quality control. The machine itself is really well built. And I really question the knowledge of those guys that are in charge for firmware on these machines. I had to go back to older builds several times as the updates left me having nothing else than problems.
@jsullivan05
@jsullivan05 3 года назад
@@ScubaDaveCCR You guys keep saying "steep learning curve" and I don't think you know what that means lol. If I bought a laptop and had to replace several parts in it before it worked, I wouldn't say that it has a "steep learning curve", I'd say it was broken. Steep learning curves are things that have a ton of features or do something in a totally new way or are just overall complicated, this machine isn't exactly what one would call "innovative" for 4K$ lol, it doesn't have a steep learning curve, it's just horrid QC on their end and a giant case of "lowest bidder/you get what you pay for", also from what i've seen you guys are right about getting help, they seem to know that their machines are garbage on arrival so they are probably doing extreme damage control.
@ScubaDaveCCR
@ScubaDaveCCR 3 года назад
Tabris no what I mean by steep learning curve is there is so much packed into this machine that it’s hard to grasp out of the box. And in setup if your not paying attention to what the directions are telling you you can really get lost in the process... like Joel did during the manual step in the calibration and several other steps he didn’t do which I can see now was totally wrong. I was not referring to the steep learning curve as to the broken parts. This is a very heavy printer 2-3 man moving and setup job. At the beginning oh his video they slam it on the counter sideways and then roll it up right. Obviously if he actually paid $4000 for this machine he wouldn’t be treating it this way I surely didn’t. And I will say the tech-support in the US is not impressive at all! But the Tech-support and service I got from a Craftbot HQ was exemplary. And as far as QC the machine is nicely built. I think they need to switch from the shipping carriers they are using in the US because the other country’s don’t seem to have these issues. I own 2 now... one was one of the first in the US and I had issues with it. The second was plug and play... It’s kinda hard to talk about something you don’t own! 🤔

We have one of these since 2 months ago. Spent a lot of time to get it commissioned. They clearly have quality control issues, our machine had the set screw for the right extruder filament gear overtightened (hex slot ruined). Also one of the right extruder hot-end hex screws is eating its threads and will need replacement. A few other practical observations: - Despite the automation, this is not a beginner printer. You need considerable expertise to work through eventual issues. There are apparently only a few users as there is not much help online. - Overall the machine is built like a tank and you can see quality design touches everywhere. The automatic calibration is a must-have. - Extruder shroud re-assembly is delicate work. Think of it as attaching the display flex cable of an iPhone. If you misalign the shroud and use any force you will get the results in this video: bent pins and de-soldered guide pins. That is not shipping damage but forced assembly. - Don't think the nozzle is pre-clogged, there's just some filament left in the feed channel (filament was unloaded cold after factory test?). Just heat the nozzle and use one of the smaller hex keys in the kit to force the filament into the nozzle (after releasing extruder gear pressure) - When you swap a steel nozzle to print non-toy materials, it will be higher than the brass one. So swap both of them even if you use the right extruder for support. If the nozzle heights differ by more than 0.1? mm you need to move the right extruder manually. It does not work like in their instructions (gravity drop to the bed), you need to actually force push it down to touch the bed. - We have had nothing than trouble with PVA supports. All PVA we have tried has been flexible enough to get stuck in the filament sensor aperture. Results in terrible clogging that needs extruder disassy to clear. If you release the extruder tension it does not extrude properly. Just use HIPS for support. - Firmware (latest of course) has weird issues with the whole printer freezing with no apparent reason (just stops and extrudes a biig blob, or makes weird moves and the freezes completely). Suggest power cycling before a longer print. - The remote UI does not (yet) replicate all the features of the touch screen so you cannot really adjust the print job remotely. And the camera is too low resolution (cheap?) - Our biggest gripe is the lack of z fine-tuning. The automatic calibration leaves z too high. To get stuff to stick to the bed we currently need to apply a global gcode offset in S3D - Get spare silicone socks for hot-ends (they break easily when you swap nozzles). Also get spare bed probe pins, the machine eats those whenever you crash the left extruder

This makes my $1800 T-Rex 3 IDEX machine look amazing in comparison. 400x400x700 build plate and I upgraded the extruder to use BMG dual geared drives. The stock extruders worked great in a 24/7 environment for 3 months straight.

I wonder if someone bought this printer, if they'd have the same experience you've had with Craftbot replacing it completely? This is why I struggle with stuff like this, I have had very differenct experiences with custom support than what youtuber/streamers seem to get. For $4000, that is a riduclous price to pay for something that just..doesn't seem to work right. I'd expect that from my $300 QQ-S or $200 Q5...not from a $4,000 IDEX.

@ProtonOne11
@ProtonOne11 3 года назад
the spring pins are fine, the problem is that alignement pin was not properly soldered in the first place (looks like it was hand soldered, at least the blob of flux residue on the PCB indicates that to me), and you need at least 2 of them to properly guide the spring pins and contacting pads to eachother. I wonder if the PCB pads used as contact point are actually gold plated, of if they (wrongfully) think that the ENIG from the PCB-fab would be enough. On a 4k$ machine they hopefully did it right, but the bad soldering and lack of quality control paints a bad picture to begin with.

There is 2 problems here: The design which lets this problem to occur (the alignment pin shouldn't be able to detach from the solder if other fasteners hold it well in place); I don't fully agree that it's a shipping problem The fact their replacements had problems already. I suspect that filament in the nozzle is a higher temp material hence why it didn't budge when attempting to extrude; the fact it wasn't removed prior to sending it makes it seem like the replacement was done rapidly for damage control rather than quality control in mind.

I have one of these. My print bed is actually warped (bowed up at the left and right edges). After calibration my first layer z-height is perfect near the center but the nozzles actually scrape the surface at the extreme right and left edges. This has happened gradually. It did not do this when I first got it. Craftware initially blamed it on a faulty BL-Touch calibration. Then they told me to downgrade the firmware. I finally sent photos of a straight-edge laying across the bed to show the bow. After a week, they have not responded. I really want to love this machine, but... I hope they get their act together. It is a beautiful piece of hardware when it works.

Having to strip the extruder down to the gearbox just to clear a jam inside said gearbox is bad design. It's $4000 not $400, there is not much excuse for that sloppy design. Suspect the right extruder jam sensor is connected to electronics with some minor manufacturing fault, eg wrong resistor in a certain place. Will this be the first 3D printer to catch fire, due to Joel getting so fed up he set it on fire himself ?
@fuse3d
@fuse3d 3 года назад
Joel didn't have to strip down the extruder, all he had to do was adjust the extruder tension from the top of the extruder, this would also have fixed his issue with the filament slipping and trying to correct a non existent jam. This is a 30 second adjustment
@3DPrintingNerd
@3DPrintingNerd 3 года назад
I did have to strip down the extruder. There was a big filament ball in the gearbox I had to remove. That’s why I took it apart and showed that in the video. The tension had nothing to do with it - the tremendous heat from the heat creep caused the PLA to melt in the gearbox. For the screw at the top, what is proper tension? I tried various depths of the screws from all the way in to all the way out, and a few levels in between.

I own a Craftbot 3, where is the IDEX printer before this one. It wasn't available for long, but it has/had the number of trouble you had. Like others have said, Craftbot didn't seem to send me a new printer like you received. I had to deal with these problems myself, and it wasn't as FUN as your experience. But here is what makes me VERY mad. They haven't updated the firmware since the new printer came out. Check their website if you don't believe me. And my printer still has lots of firmware bugs. Good support, yeah. By the way, I get those clogged filament problems ALL THE TIME, and unlike your printer, mine DOES NOT have ant sensitivity control. I would NEVER go near CRAFTBOT again with a 1000 ft. pole. Even if their new printer is great (It isn't) what about just abandoning all those with the previous model? Glad you could get them to keep sending you new replacement printers, but for normal customers, they don't.

Highly doubtful the pins were damaged in transit. There is nothing for it to snag against and the other pins would show some signs of damage. $4k for a pile of broken garbage is steeper. If they can't even compensate for shipping handling, they should get out of the business. Frankly, $4k is ludicrous in the first place. 3D Printing Nerd yes, upon arrival the exchange nozzle was jammed with sandblasting medium. Luckily I had some of those needles for clearing nozzle jams that Pooch once gave me. So I was able to clear it out. I took a picture because otherwise no one would believe me. I investigated it using my microscope. As a dental technician I know that it must have been: aluminum oxide sandblasting medium. Oh, I forgot to say why I had to exchange the nozzle on my new machine in first place. I kept on having filament jams continuously on one head.

@@choschiba Since I'm really curious... I wonder what part of the manufacturing process on a 3D printer involves sand blasting? I've received DIY 3D printer kits where the box had lots of aluminium swarf floating around because they must be cutting V-slots/V-rails right beside where they pack the printer components. That lead to swarf getting inside the hot end assembly and jamming the nozzle right out of the starting gate.
