Crafting a medieval leather gorget from start to finish. I sell both the pattern and the item itself on my Etsy shop.
You can get your own from my shop:
foxesandravens.com/collection...
You can also get the pattern if you want to try making it yourself here:
foxesandravens.com/collection...
Part One: Cutting and Punching 0:15
Part Two: Wet Shaping 3:18
Part Three: Tooling 4:20
Part Four: Dyeing 6:16
Part Five: Assembling 8:00
Part Six: Presentation 8:34
This piece is great for LARPs, or Medieval and Renaissance Fairs. I cannot speak to the efficacy of such a piece for live steel combat, as it wasn't designed with that in mind, but adjustments could easily be made.
Most of the music is from Out of My Own Light by @LouiseBichan, a Scottish traditional violinist/fiddler. You can find the album on bandcamp at
louisebichan.bandcamp.com/alb...
Her other channel is @fiddlecam, where she posts videos of her playing lovely traditional tunes in front of beautiful landscapes all over the world.
The final song is from Jean-François Bélanger, a Quebecois musician playing and composing Scandinavian inspired tunes on nyckelharpa.
His channel is @JeanFrançoisBélanger

Beautiful work, once again; and a beautiful video. Have you made (or will you make) an archer’s bracer?

Very cool video! I love the gorget and how you filmed this video. I just wish you tooled something on the back. Even though my ponytail will cover the back of my (almost finished) gorget, I tooled some insignias just to be more “complete” I guess. I’ll Be sure to check out your other videos!

Yeah not a bad suggestion at all! I would have to charge more to have tooling on both sides though, so sometimes I try to reduce the tooling to make stuff more affordable.

Excellent work, I'm highly impressed. Your skiving knife is a really interesting design, where did you get it. There were some points in the video that make me nervous as hell though, you seem to cut toward yourself in a few places (though that could be and likely is just camera angle, your fingers were probably nowhere near as close to the blade as they looked) and that made me cringe hard. Still, highly enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks Mike, the knife I’m using for skiving is actually called a Safety Beveler by the Tandy: tandyleather.com/products/safety-beveler I do have to unfortunately modify my hand and body positions, and work in ways I never would normally, so that what I’m doing is visible in the video 🙄 I agree that safety comes first, and all crafters should try to keep their hands out of the cutting path of their knives!

Hello! Is the design you tooled available too? I love the leaves and the little acorn and I thought maybe I could add it to my gorget too. I just bought the pattern

Sadly I haven't had the time to make any of my tooling artwork available for purchase, it's something I would love to do. Hopefully some day!

How big do the buckles need to be? ❤️
@FoxesandRavens
@FoxesandRavens 2 года назад
I believe the straps in the pattern are 5/8", but it could be 1/2" as well: the most important thing is that your straps match your buckles.

What is the width of the head of those rivets? They look about 10mm wide?
@FoxesandRavens

I believe they're 8mm, standard double cap rivets

@tatyanak4304

what size rivets did you use?
@FoxesandRavens
@FoxesandRavens 3 года назад
It's dependent on the thickness of the leather, I actually have several different lengths, between 4mm and 13mm long, but usually I'm using 8mm. They should be about 1-2mm longer than the thickness of the leather they're riveting.

it looks awesome! does it restricts movement in any way?
@FoxesandRavens
@FoxesandRavens Год назад
Not the movement of the head or arms really, but if you shrug your shoulders it will move, and of course if you bend over, it'll probably fall around your ears.
@universe8607
@universe8607 Год назад
@@FoxesandRavens but it shouldn't fall off if you attach it to the vest?
@FoxesandRavens
@FoxesandRavens Год назад
@@universe8607 you would have to do some tests! I wouldn't recommend attaching it to anything, it would be difficult to get in and out of: you have to unbuckle the neck to be able to get it on and off, since the neck hole is smaller than your head size.
@universe8607

@@FoxesandRavens that's true, but it's expected that a multi piece armor might take a while and even help of another person to take it off
