In this week's episode of The Leather Element, Chuck gives us a first look at his new suit of armor he made for Dragon Con! Chuck explains what weight leather he uses and how some of the pieces come together. He also shows us a closer look at the armor in his shop that you see in all of his videos.

As usual, this is another inspirational and instructive video by Chuck Dorsett. Whatever Weaver Leathercraft is paying him, it's not enough. IDEA FOR A LEATHER ELEMENT EPISODE: Tell us what all those incredible tools are on the tool board in the background. That armor is beautiful! I created a leather chest piece and shoulder pauldrons around twenty years ago when I was in high school. It was my first big leather project. I based it off of a Roman tab armor design I found online. I still have it in a storage box in the garage. It is all moldy and nasty - I need to take it apart, clean it up and put it back together. Chuck was right though; it is the most rewarding leather project I have ever completed, and I have worked on a lot of different projects.

I made a (mostly) accurate historical leather armor for a con this past year- I say mostly accurate because it's a lamellar armor, and the originals would have been lashed together with linen or silk cord where I used the paracord I had on hand, and the originals were tied over the shoulders with the same cord, but for comfort I made shoulder straps. It's also sized up a bit because I'm a big boy, but stylistically, it seems pretty accurate. I had to base it off of a handful of written descriptions and some painted soldier figures from the period, but for a 2200-year-old armor, it looks pretty close to the painted figures. 10-11oz baked leather pieces. It was a peasant's armor, basically only being a cuirass, but it's definitely a fun project(and handcutting all the pieces so they line up properly when they overlap). Not nearly as pretty as yours, but I'm looking to do another (mostly) historically accurate leather armor from around the same time that's a step up from the one I made already.

@TheTrunks340

@@WeaverLeatherSupply yeah, it's definitely interesting looking into these historical armors. After this next one, I plan on jumping ahead about 1500 years in time and go to some Japanese ashigaru nerikawa(Japanese leather) armor. What's interesting with those is they often sewed iron or steel rods into the leather so it wouldn't lose its form over time. The nice thing there is we have some extant examples I can reference for how thick the leather was, size of the rods they sewed into it, even how they laced together. Only major issue is getting enough disposable income to get the leather(and some of the tools) to make the armors- good leather isn't cheap, as you know :p but my work schedule is starting up again, so I should be able to get enough leather for my next project in time to have it done for the same con next year.

After finishing the color, is it first polished with "carnauba creme" and then coated with "tan kote" for protection? Or is it protected with "tan kote" first,and then polished with "carnauba creme"? Knights don't wear fuzzy boots. You should do up a simulated armor gaiter to complete the look. Also try changing the fur on your cloak for a fancy patterned leather trim. It will be cooler on hot days and look just as good. Plus lidded tankards are much more practical than horns as they keep out bugs and dust and also can be made from leather. I did Faire's and living history for almost 30 years. Plate armor gets heavy. Leather is light. Trust me on this.
