The smell when soaking the willow is normal it's kind of a bitter muddy smell

my mom used to do willow weaving as hobby, she soaked them in big pipes with water also, and apperently the smell is normal, basically fermenting the sticks a little is apperently part of the process, and different fermentation times can be used to give the willow wood coloration for weaving patterns

Very nice build. Willows are easy to grow and it's always nice to have some on hand so you can make things you need around the house. There are a few good channels here on youtube that talk about how to grow them and weave them, keeping the traditions alive. We need more people taking part, though! Also, to preserve the wood, consider a coat of Pine Tar. It's very traditional and would have been rather commonplace in Medieval times as it's a great preservative and was much sought after by the sailors who used it to preserve their boats, ropes, and sails.

2:15 I would wrap a line around the wood and friction cut a groove, then you could cross-thread the posts with the notch as the guide/hook.

Nevermind, all that weaving is holding it quite secure that way XD

Cool! The basket backpack has such great vibes. We were at a medieval market near Bonn and there was a father using a willow basket as a baby backpack.

I want to make a willow backpack to have a more medieval feel while camping and trekking this winter. I couldn’t find a video anywhere till I stumbled upon yours! This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for posting. Subscribed and can’t wait to see more.

Willow bark contains quite a bit of salicylic acid, which is likely the source of the weird smell after soaking the rods. This backpack turned out to be fucking awesome, I love it!

Just got a massive large wicker backpack handmade. I recommend putting a fur on the back for more comfortability and padding the leather straps with fur as well. I put a raw leather as the lid which makes it rain proof

В России есть такая штука называется поняга, и она на много легче, и функциональнее. А еще есть берестянка или торба, она легче раз в 10 и вместительней.

I have so many questions! Did you go on a pilgrimage? Can you talk more about cheese glue?
@TheShieldery
@TheShieldery 7 месяцев назад
yes, I did; I walked from southern germany to jersualem in medieval clothing in 2015/16. I made a video diary which you can access via the playlist on my channel, but I did the videos in german back then. Recepy for Cheeseglue: Casein 1:2,5 water and let that rest over night. Then add 2/3 of the original caseins weight in Marsh lime. You could make casein by yourself out of quark, but I bought it from Kremer pigmentes. Its origins go back to the old Egypt. You can see me use it in detail in the first view minutes of my Pavese video :)

Hello, another great build! But I do not really understand all of the vocabulary. What is the "Flechtmaterial" made of? Could you please be so kind to translate it to German? Have a lovely day! Greetings from Austria

😅 Genau so läuft es (fast) immer bei der Arbeit: 1. Toll! Ein neues Projekt. Ich hab auch voll den Plan. Kann gar nichts schief gehen. 2. So ein Mist. Der Teufel steckt im Detail. 3. Verdammte Axt! So ein Sch$@%#!!! 4. Ok. Läuft! Sieht doch gut aus!

Have you considered adding a belt to take some of the weight off your shoulders?
@TheShieldery
@TheShieldery Год назад
yes, but that would be even more modern and further away from authentic :( .

Such an inspiring project! I can’t wait to have a go at this, I’ve only tried small baskets so far but I want to try something bigger. Did you cover the whole backpack with oil or just the ash? I’m asking as I haven’t oiled any baskets I’ve done before (mostly spruce root) so wondering whether I should
@TheShieldery

Thank you very much! I used it on the whole Backpack. Till now it makes a very good Impression! :)

You could have avoided nailing the straps with leather by just making them a belt that tie in front (belly strap). I think other variations could work without the wooden bottom as well. Other historic designs can be seen in woodcuts and artwork
@TheShieldery
@TheShieldery Год назад
Yes, that would have made it way easyer to carry, too. But i couldn't find a source for this :(

Soaked willow stinks bad. It takes years to get used to and even like the smell. I worked with willow for years and I know what I speak of. Boiled willow smells even worse.
