This is an absolutely amazing concept! The idea of a tag platform fighter is genuinely really cool and implementing other mechanics from trad fighters also is really interesting! I honestly think a series on this could be really cool, going over different potential characters and their movesets or other aspects of the game in closer detail! Incredible work as always!
Fantastic video as always Astral, you sure would be quite the game dev I think that some of these ideias would complement this game For the roster, it would be cool if it was made in teams, kinda like what KOF does As cool as team making in figthers is, it could be pretty underwealming for someone playing for the first time, since they still don't know what type each character is, so it makes sense to make it like this And for story mode, there is a lot that we could do, but I think that since Astral is a big smash fan, she'd definetly would favor a multiverse setting, since that way we don't need to worry to much about making every theme fit in a same world(I mean, as cool as like, Samurais and Cowboys are, it would feel off to see them living in the same place, don't you agree?)
so as a follow-up you have always been someone I've admired for delving deep into games and picking them apart to see what makes them tick. Your vision shows such passion, but it's clearly rooted in everything you've learned from the games you love and hate. Hearing the way you walk through the aspects of the game is a lot like the seperate pages of a design document delivered in a conceptual pitch, and you have a lot of professional flair alongside your bright enthusiasm! Maybe someday you should try your hand at creating a game of your own, I know it would turn out amazing!
I think the airdashes and Bursts are not necessary for the system. You should rather focus on the Tag Team aspect of it because that idea already needs a lot of mechanics to supplement it. For example, instead of health regen on tagged out characters, what if they built up their super meter when in the backline? So the player doesn't get a way to stay in the fight longer with a character, but they'll get a stronger attack instead. Adding supers to a Platform fighter is difficult because usually those games can only accomodate powered up versions of special moves because the designers usually don't want a dedicated Super button or doing motion inputs. So maybe pressing the Tag button with either the Attack or the Special button would have your tag partners do their supers, the buttons determining which teammate's super is used?
Considering customization being based on Soul Calibur, I assume the roster would just be basically a bunch of humanoids? If so, that will demand either making them look like the Mii Fighters or really reconsidering a lot of aspects of platform fighters because humanoid characters can be tricky to design for in that space. Also the idea of having 60+ characters each with their own custom moves fills me with dread.
