Really good info but hard to see your subject matter with your dark set up. Constructive feedback: I recommend setting your camera on a white board (or lighter color surface) and bounce lights into white cards (or use soft boxes) off camera to lighten up all the pieces and parts. Even wear a light color shirt for some contrast.

I love my FX6 but if there is ONE thing that angers me about it?....why in the Hell did Sony not give us a 10bit long GOP codec? All of their recent Alpha cameras have this but for some reason Sony forces us to go into a large all-I CODEC to get 10 bit? They then left us with 100mbps, long GOP 8bit. WTF Sony????...you can't shoot log in 8 bit!

Totally wish they included that. And I would actually love an mp4 codec for my run n gun clients who need immediately workable files not in an mxf wrapper. The annoying part is I know that the fx6 can do it bc the proxy files are mp4. So just give me a little thicker file at 4k and it would be so convenient.

I bought the small rig shoulder/VCT plate which has the same option of sliding the plate whilst leaving the VCT on the tripod. I bought the lanparte grip relocation arm though which, for me, is the better option as I keep my grip as close to lens' side as possible, allowing me to put my left hand to rest underneath my right elbow. It also means its end point is the same as the lens making sure on a wide angle, your right hand/grip isn't in shot.

@@davidmorefield Not directly though the camera no but i found out that you can monitor live from the app while recording! There is a slight delay though. I might have gone with that option if it was around when I purchased. However, I think the limitation of not being able to hotswap is actually a benefit bc I don’t have to think of two different battery levels and bring two chargers. Of course, if you NEED hot swap then that’s a different story. But the camera can reboot so fast, it’s not an issue in the field. and if I need dc power then I unplug the vmount and use that input.

So I would personally disagree on the arm positioning bit. I’ve found through injury (golfer’s elbow) that having an ENG style grip on the lens puts a lot of strain on your elbow over the course of a 10hr shoot day. Moving my hand properly down to a 90* position massively helps prevent this injury and then lightly rest my left hand on my Nano which is mounted directly on the left rod of the VCT, still within reach of the zoom ring on my lens.

Speaking of different styles. I'm always slightly amused by people optimizing their rigs for speed speed SPEED, 2 seconds maximum to power up your camera and be rolling at a moment's notice, how dare anyone take more than half a heartbeat to get a certain shot... Been there, done that. Now that I'm older, I'm optimizing my rig to intentionally decelerate workflow. Yeah, you read that right. The world around us has gotten so damn hectic and everything has to happen at all once, so that inevitably quality will suffer just in order to be as fast as possible to cram as much production as possible into just one shoot day. For me, that's just wrong. Quality takes time. If I need three minutes to set up my camera for the next shot, I'm taking those three minutes. And guess what? In the long run, it will eventually produce a higher-quality end result. Again, that's just my style that may differ greatly from other's. There's benefits to all of them, but this one works the best for me.
@davidmorefield
@davidmorefield 9 месяцев назад
Totally agree that quality takes time. However, I have yet to see how taking more time to set up a camera increases quality. I have seen how taking more time to compose, light and speak with the director/client has improved quality. I just don’t see the value of slowing the production down for tasks that could’ve been done beforehand. I would rather my auto mechanic spend an extra 10 minutes diagnosing my problems than getting his tools in order. I don’t see the net positive in your workflow when it pertains to getting the camera in order. But if you are alluding to an overly fast paced production in general without room for thought and reconsideration, then I totally agree.
@JulioBHJ
@JulioBHJ 9 месяцев назад
@@davidmorefieldTaking the time to properly set up the camera forces the client into the actual mindset that quality takes time. In my previous years, I've had a fully rigged out camera ready to go out of the bag just like you do now, and as soon as I switched it on, the client frantically asked if I was rolling yet because "we need to get the shot quickly so we can get by with only four hours overtime". This combination of a jam-packed schedule, extremely poor planning and therefore rushing everything is counterproductive to a quality piece of work that I strive to accomplish. So I stopped having the camera ready to go, and while I set it up, the client could tell me exactly what he wants, we discussed how to achieve that and so on. The deceleration in my workflow is to slow down that feeling of "we don't have time to discuss blocking, lighting and framing, just get the shot!" most clients have, and forces them to accept that blocking, lighting and framing need to be discussed, therefore improving quality. However there are some clients who already know this, and with them, I also try to prepare everything I can beforehand. My gripe isn't with speed and efficiency in general, but with hectic schedules and panicking clients who would sacrifice quality for amount of shots accomplished. Sorry, could have been clearer on my part in the first place.
