This is a video where I talk about how we created a short documentary on an Island in Maine, USA. The film follows Amanda Devine of the Maine Coast Heritage Trust on a day in her job as she battles to retain biodiversity in our ecosystem. The short doc is worth watching first, but here's what you can expect from this video:
0:00 - Intro
1:00 - Gear Talk
3:45 - People (choosing a subject)
5:00 - Technique Tips
7:05 - Tip 1: Less Gear
8:35 - Tip 2: Audio is greater than video
9:28 - Tip 3: Interview mid-project
10:17 - Tip 4: Be familiar with your subject
11:05 - Tip 5: Bring food and clothing
12:18 - Conclusion
Gear used to make this talking-head:
Sony FX6
Sony G 20mm f/1.8
Sennheiser MKH 8050
Edited with:
FCPX
Color Finale Pro
Izotope RX9

Preparing for the shoots is so important 👍🏻 sometimes when you are a one man show it is so hard 😂 best cinematic greetings from a german FX6 filmmaker

You're totally right! It's the least fun part for me, but pre-production is so important and can make your film day so much better.

Hey! Very informative video, appreciate the in depth explanations. Was any of it shot using the FX6's autofocus? -- If so, how did you go about the FX6 not having continuous AF at true 24p? Thanks!
@MaineMountainMedia
@MaineMountainMedia Год назад
Hey thanks for watching. We did this video entirely with manual focus. We do shoot autofocus sometimes but we record in 23.98p or 59.94p and we haven't had any issues. Just testing now it looks like true 24p still has continuous autofocus on my FX6. Maybe with an older firmware AF was disabled at some frame rates?

Great vid, you mentioned just using one pelican case. Where do you put your fx6s then? I am now running into the problem of having to travel with my fx6
@MaineMountainMedia

Hey great question. We had plans to film the boat ride as well so we just kept them fully rigged and held them in our hands on the boat. The ride out to the island was calm so we filmed and the ride back was a little more rough so we wrapped them in rain coats and set them on our lap. In the car we have a plank of wood with tripod mounts screwed in so we mount the cameras to the board and they sit fully rigged when we drive. Thanks for watching!

Love this type of intricate use-case knowledge. It really shows a deeper side to the pros/cons of the gear and unique situations. I try to provide a similar perspective but vlog style. New subscriber. Keep the content coming. Especially fx6 related content.

Love the behind the scenes info / commentary.. Q: I'm not familiar with the FX6..as far as stabilizing your footage on the boat.. did you consider using a gimbal or does the Fx6 have internal stabilization? thank you - this is an important message...
@MaineMountainMedia
@MaineMountainMedia Год назад
Thanks for watching! The FX6 does not have any stabilization. This project was an exercise in minimal gear use. We didn't want to complicate the process with gimbals. We also wanted to stick with our Rokinon lenses without any stabilization. We felt the natural shake of the camera would help the viewer relate to the bumpy boat ride as it is in real life.

Does the FX6 have a max SD size restriction like the a7siii? Because I’d love to get the new angelbird CF Express Type A 1TB in there..
@MaineMountainMedia
@MaineMountainMedia Год назад
I don't know, I've heard reviews coming in of people who got early production models of the 1TB from Angelbird so I'd assume it can handle 1TB CF express but No idea on SD max size. We usually use 256gb and haven't tried anything larger yet.

Great Information, thanks for sharing! I am thinking on purchasing an FX6. Can ask How many GB you got from the main camera from that day? I am a bit afraid of the Giant files because the FX6 doesn't have 4K Long-op. How do you manage with that? Thanks!
@MaineMountainMedia
@MaineMountainMedia Год назад
Hey good question and a very valid concern. We shot 400GB for this entire project with both cameras. We do shoot in UHD 4K Long GOP. The FX6 has a setting to shoot in 4K Long GOP HOWEVER it is in 8-bit not 10-bit. So far, we have not had any issue working with 8-bit, we are very pleased with the resulting image and we hope the footage speaks for itself. We highly recommend this camera, so far we have been loving the FX6.

Great video! What is that low-profile, thin XLR cable on the FX6? It looks really sleek and out of the way but I can find one that short online.

as a pro how do you feel about the wireless go lavs? They seemed liked the budget alternative and less reliable, but i just did a shoot and used that, a senn g4 and a rode link kit and the go sounded best. Is it good enough for higher end work or do big clients ask for something different?
@MaineMountainMedia
@MaineMountainMedia Год назад
I can imagine some clients would disapprove of the Wireless go system, if nothing else purely because of the stigma/price. In my experience, the sound quality is good and self noise is relatively low! I have had issues with it and it's not a system that is great for troubleshooting on the job. But there are two transmitters so you can swap out if it's a single interview, and with the built-in recording, I've been able to overcome problems quite easily so far. It's worth noting that I nearly always have my lav as my backup audio. I primarily hardwire a boom mic for audio so the lack of confidence that I may have in the go system is not a concern 90% of the time. Full transparency, I'd love a higher-end wireless system. The UWP system from Sony integrates into the MI-shoe (smart shoe on the camera) so it can leave the two XLR inputs still available. Transmitter packs are larger and don't have on-board recording though so every equipment decision is a trade-off. The dream would be an A-20mini from Sound Devices but I have to be realistic. For now, I'm content with the Go ii but every time I bump into a problem (batteries cannot be replaced, signal cannot be manually switched, recordings being corrupt or not exporting properly, cannot adjust internal gain in transmitter, etc.) I consider alternatives. Thanks for watching!
