We have this old 220V twin cylinder Craftsman air compressor. We couldn't leave it on because it leaked so badly from the regulator it cycled on and off almost continually. Nothing like being rattled awake by this thing kicking on at 2am... So we got a replacement regulator from Harbor Freight and fixed it. Its working perfectly and is a true workhorse of a compressor for larger projects.

If the leak is near the pressure switch, we can say the tank pressure is not being held back by the one-way check valve as one reason. Craftsman was smart to get these made sealed for profit marketing on fittings. You can not open the A19712-Check Valve, service the rubber stopper for debris, to increase spring tension and flatness for sealing the seat or rubber. It's only the check valve with the snap ring retainer clip capable of being inspected. The second leak reason does occur from the air regulator diaphragm is ruptured. The third rupture point is under the pressure switch monitoring the actual tank pressure. It's best to use soap bubble test. Thanks for the find!

My dad told me the Teflon tape trick and I’ve always remembered it. Hold the threaded piece in your left hand. Start the tape on the bottom side of the threads and wrap it clockwise.

Buying a direct replacement Craftsman valve from Amazon would have saved you time making the existing old gauges useable again. The cover wouldn't need modification either. I would have been cheaper in the long run with the Craftsman valve.

I just bought same model off marketplace, replaced the regulator, worked fine, but went to adjust the switch and im missing the plastic cut-off screw...so now it just leaks once it gets to a certain pressure right out of that cut off screw hole. tried to look for a new screw adn the parts for it are absolete so guess now I will be buying a whole new switch along with pipe/fittings if needed....thought I was getting a steal -"$50" but its gonna end up costing more than I assumed...live and learn! on the flip side, I now feel like I can buy any used compressor and fix them with ease!

One question. Did your pressure switch work properly with just the tank pressure gauge by itself? I have the same compressor. I made the same mistake of putting both gauges on the regulator and now the motor won’t stop. I’m leaving the shop now to go get another gauge but wanted to also ask.
@CopperBarnHomestead

I have same model, my dad gave me. I think its leaking out the manifold. Not holding air, compressor motor seems to be working ok. Or could be the regulator, I told the old on apart didn't seem to fix it. I will get a new one like you did and see if that is it.

Good video but honestly, I think just buying the original Craftsman part would’ve been a lot easier, cheaper, and less headaches with all those additional parts you had to buy.
@CopperBarnHomestead
@CopperBarnHomestead 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching and your comment. That is possible, I never even checked to see if that part was available, we got that compressor from Sears around 1992 or so. I pass 3 Harbor Freight stores on my way to work and they have the stuff on the shelf. I’m positive Craftsman parts would not be cheaper even if you could find them. For me sometimes finding another way to do something is enjoyable as well. On the other hand having something as it came from the store working as new is also cool and makes a case for finding original parts. Thanks again for watching and the comments! I have this same compressor. I have a couple leaks that I tried to fix with Teflon tape. I am trying to figure out why it builds up pressure,but will never cycle off. It is constantly going no matter what I set the tank pressure to. Any idea of what I need to do?
@CopperBarnHomestead
@CopperBarnHomestead 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and your comment. I honestly don’t know and am not an expert on air compressors at all. If I was looking into it I would see if it is leaking at any of the fittings or the drain valve or pressure relief valve even. If it never builds enough pressure to shut off it might even have a leak in the tank itself. If it builds enough pressure to shut off but doesn’t it might be the pressure switch but that could be a very dangerous situation so use extreme caution even trying to diagnose the issue. Sorry if this wasn’t as helpful as you hoped, good luck with your compressor but above all be safe! Thanks again for watching and for your comment! Have a great day and be safe ❤️
@any0n378

Constantly going, meaning it just keeps on building pressure and bypassing on the emergency relief valve? Sounds to me like your pressure switch it faulty (does not close the power circuit when setpoint is reached).

Thanks for watching and your comment. Yeah that is a problem. Not sure where to begin sorting through that issue but obviously, it needs to be wired correctly and then check for leaks. Does this regulator change/ alter the scfm capabilities at 40 or 90 psi?
@CopperBarnHomestead
@CopperBarnHomestead 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and your comment. Actually thats a good question and I don’t even pretend to know that answer. The compressor still runs everything it did before the change if that helps. Have a good one and be safe ❤️
@tommyshaw2420
@tommyshaw2420 Год назад
The SCFM is a metric that mostly means "how fast can the compressor refill the tank at a certain pressure" the regulator itself will regulate the air pressure out. For example, this compressor can continually push out 6.4 (standard)cubic feet per minute at 90psi. The regular will adjust how much PSI you want it to let out.

@CopperBarnHomestead
@CopperBarnHomestead 2 года назад
I don’t know of any adapter that would allow you to run a 220v motor with 110v. If there was one it would probably be more expensive than either running a new 220v line or buying a 110v compressor. Ymmv thank you for watching and your comment, be safe ❤️

Just change the plug in ends
@alanshaw4655
@alanshaw4655 5 месяцев назад
@@waynegrant7338 its not that simple, each wire that leads to motor is wired for 220 volts, if he does not wire them correctly at the plug end ?, he will burn the motor up. now, he '' should '' be able to re-wire the motor itself, as most of these motors will let you convert them from single phase ( 120 ) to two phase ( 220 ). all depends on the motor ?.

Hi, thanks for watching and your comment. Other people have said that as well. The name plate says 240v and it has the factory plug on it. I found this on Amazon that looks identical.
