Rear oil seal on the auger gear box was damaged from debris being caught on the impeller axle. Replaced the seal and refilled with 80W-90 gear oil. While I had it apart the customer wanted me to change the belts simply because I already had it apart. Also had to change out the auger bearing as it was noisy.
Customer is one of the better ones as he religiously drains the fuel every year, no carburetor issues with this machine. Refilled it with some Trufuel 4 cycle for testing so he wont have problems when the first snow of the season comes in the few months.

Feels weird servicing snow equipment when it’s 100 degrees out, although winter-related parts such as shear pins and paddles are cheaper in the Summer, as are electric plug-in starters.

GREAT JOB..Reaching in should you be able to spin the impeller freely ? And the augers not move ?

No they should be locked by the brake

I'm currently tearing down my Troybilt 3-stage. Something is vibrating in the auger system after a huge stick got stuck in it. Visually the axle going across the front looks straight while spinning but the gearbox and the accelerators are jiggling around like crazy. I'm guessing the worm shaft is bent. The stupid sheer pins didn't do their job, they only half-sheered and stayed in place and instead stalled out the engine before I could shut it down. Bad vibration ever since.

Sorry to hear. I'm guessing that the shear pins are not all created equal a lot of the China aftermarket use lower grade metal which it should be a grade 8 instead of a grade 5. Grade 8 will just snap off cleanly after so much torque. Others may hold on a little bit longer. Once you get the auger assembly out removing the worm gear replacing the seals and reassembling isn't too bad but it is a decent amount of work

I wish all people would take care of there machines in advance like this costumer is . This is one of the things of small engines I do not like .

I 💯 agree! Granted it keeps guys like us in business to fix these machines all the time but as mechanics ourselves it's tough for us to see a machine we spent good hard-earned money just waste away because we did not do proper maintenance intervals. Such a throwaway society we live in.

Not off the top of my head no but if you look up the model number on partstree.com you should be able to search for the oil seal on the auger assembly diagram
