John, one of the things I’ve really appreciated about you over the years is that you have avoided any commercializing of your channel - for example selling branded T-Shirts, creating members-only content behind a paywall, etc. It has helped in your efforts of creating a community, and is respectful of the lean budgets many of us have. And your steadfastness is amazing - a good episode every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Thanks buddy!
And the Dude doesn't even monetize so you don't have to watch any ads!! That alone cost him over a couple hundred grand, that's quite a sacrifice eh!!☻
And not poluting the content for commercial sellers or audience. The 'At home in John's Basement' is a beautiful aesthetic that i'd miss if it ever changed or went away!
We grew up at a great time. I learned a lot of history by eavesdropping on my Dad and the neighbors' Dads. They were WWII vets and I learned some very interesting stories. We saw history too. Nice video. Good Luck, Rick
John, Is there any way I came live with you for a month and go on your poor mans flea market with you?? HA A guy could rent a haul truck and drive thru your hood and go sit in a parking lot and make alot of money. Just awesome!!
Great show as always John. The saying is correct, “you can never have enough clamps”. Found that out when glueing up a bench top for my workshop. I think I used nearly every clamp I have.
Of course I enjoyed the show Scout. I probably have the shortest pipe clamps in the world because besides G clamps I also collect all Australian made clamps so my pipe clamps are only 12” long so I can display them. That soldering iron looks like it was hardly used and now looks brand new. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺
Congratulations on the kudo's from Tub O Towels. And honest assessment and demonstration pays off. Well deserved, too, I might add. I never knew I needed a set of the pipe clamps until today. Thanks for the lesson. The soldering iron came out great. Isn't nice when a project works out? Thanks for sharing your time with us, Scout. 👍😀
I'm always amazed at the poor mans flea market. The pipe clamps are a great find, and the LED bulbs are the best things since sliced bread. Proberb waste not want not. Great show thank you
I like the proverbs from Banacek, such as: Thomas Banacek: When an owl comes to a mouse picnic, it's not there for the sack races. The chicken that clucks the loudest is the one most likely to go to the steamfitters picnic. Read the whole library my son, but the cheese will still smell after four days. Too bad that show did not last longer, it was a great one!
John that soldering iron did look new. Great job. I’m in a dilemma about all my clamps. I use to re glue furniture. I made good money doing it. Now I’m going to move and I have to downsize. Witch ones to keep out of them. I’ve had a lot of fun collecting all of my tools. Reality is I don’t use all my tools anymore. I have no one in the family to pass the bulk too. I’m faced with selling or last result donate. Thank You
Jess- Honestly unless you are building new furniture or projects big clamps just take up a lot of room. We could make money renting clamps! That would be a great idea as you only need them once in a while. 😂👍
Loved the Craftsman Soldering Iron. It looks like it could be hanging on Sears Store rack today. Well if there were any Sears Stores.😊 Always enjoy your videos!
Great video 👍 That Poor Man’s FleaMarket is gold 🟡. That was a nice looking chair 🪑, I could see you sitting in it👍. I cracked up when seeing that Santa Claus 🎅🏽 figure 😂😂👍. That was a pretty great score on those led bulbs 💡and those pipe clamps 🗜👍. Those clamps come in so handy for big wood working projects. That Halloween 🎃 pumpkin that they had out was really cool. I seen one store that had a 6 foot plus skeleton 💀man on display for sale, I think he was about $70 bucks. Some of those stores go all out on there displays, but it is really cool to see. That was a fantastic clean up on that vintage Sears Craftsman soldering iron. That pouch looks really awesome! You knock that one out of the park🏟 ⚾️⚾️⚾️👍. It really does look like N.O.S. Now ✔️. I like those tools 🛠 that come with the tool pouch, I think the graphics are pretty cool on them. Again yours looks fantastic👍. Another great shot of Old Glory 🇺🇸 flying in the breeze. Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Friday. Have a great evening. 😃👍👍
On the pipe clamps, I always purchase pipe threaded both ends, I then purchased coupling for every 2 pipes I purchase, that way if I need a longer clamp I can couple them together to make the clamp double length. I have on hand, 2 lengths at 2’- 3’-4’- and 6’, with a coupling for each pair of pipes. It has worked well over the years for me. Nice tip on protecting the pipe ends with cane tips, will be getting those soon. Excellent job on the soldering iron. Thank you sir, enjoyed watching.
Thanks John, great show as always, the PMF is always interesting, that soldering iron came up like new ! Proverbs were big in my family too, and it's true what you say about history repeating itself, sadly it's often the bad bits that get repeated it seems, human nature I guess ! Pipe clamps have always intrigued me they're not such a thing in this country as we don't have the pipe readily available so you tend to buy the two together as a kit and it's generally not so economic !
I knew those lightbulbs were coming home with you, along with the pipe clams. Love the soldering iron. The Halloween decorations are getting out hand these days. Great show!
The saying I heard was freeze the balls of a brass monkey a brass monkey was a holder for cannon balls on old ships and when it got cold the brass would contract and the cannon balls would drop off ha ha crazy stuff great show John god bless take care 🇺🇸🇳🇿🦅😎😱47
Three years ago I was given 8 pipe clamps each on 8 foot lengths of pipe. Never used them. Two days ago I nearly sold them for scrap metal. Thank goodness I kept them. If I had scrapped them I would be sick right now. Great video. What kind of maniac does not have an adapter for their candelabra? Great video. Thank you.
Random thought...I think I remember hearing that you cut your own hair! It always looks good. You should cut it once on camera and when you're finished, say, "we're calling this project done!"
Great show today! I really liked the pipe clamp segment, they're really interesting. The soldering iron came out great. Thanks again and see you Friday
My Dad had a set of clamps. The pipes were 2 ft long. He had the collars to connect them together for whatever length you needed. When done he would unscrew them and store them in a bucket. He would watch for pipes at flea markets and yard sales and add them to the buckets. When he passed away and I cleaned out his shop he had collected forty pipes and ten clamps. Mom said he only paid about fifty dollars for the set. He made tables and doors. There was pipes that were up to eight ft. Long. Some had prices from 50 cents to 2.00 dollars. So don't pass up yard sales and flea markets.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I bought different lengths of pipe, threaded both ends, I also bought the threaded pipe caps, drilled a hole in the center of the cap and inserted an eye hook with a nut ,screwed the cap to the pipes and now you can hang them up to avoid clutter and also protect the clamps, also I was cleaning up some plastic handles using comet, I spotted my bar of Lava soap and gave that a try and it works great also and I believe a little less abrasive that the comet, give it a try.
It's amazing how satisfying cleaning up a vinyl pack like that is....I'd had to get that P-N santa decanter!! And glad ya grabbed those clamps! Can't have enough of those and can't believe everything ya see😳 😅
I was over my Mom's house, she is 88 years old and we watched your video and she was amazed how perfect you did the soldering iron. She really said "OMG that looks amazing"...haaaaa
OK. Scout, that does it! I'm picking up a couple new hampsters and moving to your neighborhood! Also, I heard "Bob's your uncle" used for real in a documentary about the Dapper Don,
Those soldering irons are great. My son found a new old stock Radio Shack one at the store he works at. They had one they use once in a while and he thinks it better than the new fancy models. Speaking of the store when I asked if he could get the Tub O Towels, he said they have them on closeouts. He brought 5 home for $9 a piece. They had bought a case several years ago and couldn't sell them. I can't believe how high black pipe is. I think mine are 5 ft and were $10 a piece. No wonder few people use it. I sure wouldn't have passed that chair up. That said I am backed up on projects.
I believe all comet contains bleach. It’s such a fantastic cleaner and depending on how much pressure you exert it can be mildly or a heavy abrasive. I do believe in the last decade they changed the ingredients because it doesn’t clean my sink as well as it used to, so I believe there’s less bleach in it now.
Great show today and nice job on the soldering iron! I may have to go to Tractor Supply and get a pumpkin 😂. I think my grand children will like it. Thank You for sharing John !
I remember hearing Katherine Hepburn recite a poem. It went something like this. "There was an owl sat in an oak,the more he heard the less he spoke, the less he spoke the more he heard. Now wasn't that a wise old bird?🤔
Also get yourself an inexpensive pipe threading kit from Harbor Freight to thread your pipes for your pipe clamps. P.s. I haven't been to a barber in over 20 years, I cut my own hair also.
I hope that's not your endline box leaking again? Call CE and have them repack the ducts. The Flowbee does a nice neay and tight haircut. Good video and content .😀👍🏻🇺🇲
You could literally buy a house in your area and get all your furniture and appliances off the street with some patience 😂 If I look in the trash here I find used diapers and needles 😂😂
The black deposit on the inside of the bulb is where the tungsten that the filament is made of is evaporating and it condenses on the inside of the glass. Figured you would grab the clamps can't have too many clamps.
Hey John. Do you FloVee or free hand? I'm going to have to start coming with you to the Poor Man's Flea Market. Nothing like it around here. Must be a perk of living in the city. Jim
as always good training video.....like the jorgensen clamps better than pony because of the way they adjust....if you could ....best cleaner for cast iron...vinegar (?%) or Evaporust ? Thanks always learn from your videos
John, if you'd left those pipe-clamps I'd have walked & swam from BirminghamUK all the way to Queens just to give you a slap. I wish we had the 'poor man's fleamarket' over here. BUT if I threw out a broken lamp, I'd make sure it WAS broke, I'd harvest all the good bulbs AND plug myself before putting it on the kerb - waste-not, want-not, am I right? Although I already have enough short lengths of 2phase cord and UK13amp/fused plugs to last a lifetime lol.
An often overlooked use of pipe clamps is as spreaders, just remove and reverse the sliding jaw. Great way to avoid having to remove and plane a sticky door when the house settles.
Looking at the soldering iron I figured the chances of it working were 99%+.............Those vinyl pouches really last year after year as long as they're kept out of direct sunlight.
Remember when stores, like Woolworths, has a light bulb tester with sockets to screw bulbs into before you bought them? Some had a switch (for safety??). Some did not. Talked my brother into sticking his finger in the hole then hit the switch. Stores had vacuum tube testers. We would pole and prod to see what it did. Not the best plaything for kids in the grocery store.
If I had seen the inline skates I would have taken off the wheels. I use the wheels and bearings for wood turning jibs. The wheels can make very good handles for e.g., screws. Very nice job on the soldering iron. As you said it now looks like new-old-stock. I have several Jorgensen pipe clamps. Sad the Chicago factory closed. The brand was picked up by Great Star Tools who also picked up other defunct US brands like Arrow and Shop-Vac. They re-opened the Shop-Vac factory, but not sure which products are being manufactured at this location. Dave.
I don't think Jorgensen makes those pipe clamps in the USA any longer. You've done well buying those when you did. And I'm happy you've took the other two out of the trash, I was a little bit worried that they went to the landfill (maybe just because I wanted them myself 😅)
Alex- Everything is made overseas these days. I remember when every country made their own goods and only imported things they didn’t have or couldn’t make. 🫣
For valuable sayings that are worth living by, try Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richards Almanack. Full of bedrock wisdom. I really liked the GE Brightsticks, partly because they would always work with my wife's oddball lamps. But i dont think you can still get them. I havent seen them at the local hardware store, or big box stores for some time. The soldering iron looks brand new after you get on the job.
I was willing you to take the pipe clamps on the basis you can never have too many clamps (as I often tell my wife when I bring more home from a car boot sale).
Just looked up how much is spent annually. Last year estimate was a bit over 12 billion, mostly costumes and candy. Nice find on tge Pony clamps. Power out today in my part ofceastern Pennsylvania.
Anyone who has worked with those clamps knows that the black pipe can stain the wood that you are clamping. You need to protect the wood from contact with the pipe! Paper between the pipe and the wood is enough. If you over tighten the clamp, you can also squeeze all the glue out of the joint and the joint will fail!
Here in the NorthEast black pipe comes clear coated so they won’t rust on the shelves however I believe there are imported items that come dull and God only knows how they are made there. 😂👍
Never use acetone to try and clean vinyl tool bags. It will remove the printing instantly. Do what John did or use naphtha (lighter fluid) to remove oil and staining.
We're you a watcher of the channel Dothan Alabama Woodworker? I had not seen anything from him in a while so I checked his channel and all his videos are gone except one short and his channel is now a bunch of playlists of other people's content. I think he got hacked. 🤔
I didn’t know his channel but it seems to be up but his last video was 7 months ago- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xmhHwxCkn80.htmlsi=6EFWIhqILqTKO2w_
@ScoutCrafter That is not the right channel. It is called "Dothan Alabama Woodworker". I want to say his name was Darren, and he taught woodworking classes in North Carolina. I wish I could figure it out because he was a great guy, and I hate to see his channel taken over as it appears to have been. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dFILpgUXIyw.htmlsi=DxWLr2ZVZULzzK-k
When you said you wished you'd listened more in history, I could only think of this - history of the Bobcat. Who'd have thought turkey manure would lead to one of the best selling utility vehicles ? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bfgEr-nPCv8.html I'm not sure if this 'Tractor Wars' is worth sitting through the entire 56 minutes of but some of it is interesting ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UgtHQUi8AvQ.html Anyway, no one listens to history at school.
