CRAIGH NA DUN - OUTLANDER FILMING LOCATION TOUR

Guess what the most popular request I get for an Outlander location tour is? Craigh na Dun. Since I've already been to the Clava Cairn standing stones that inspired Outlander author Diana Gabaldon to come up with Craigh na Dun, I thought it would be fun to visit the lcoation they used for the filming.
I thought this was funny - top Google searched for Craigh na Dun:
Is Craigh na un a real place?
Where are the standing stones in Outlander?
Outlander is the Hit TV series which features the Scottish clans and is set in the Scottish Highlands. Outlander is a British-American television drama series based on the historical time travel Outlander series of novels by Diana Gabaldon. Developed by Ronald D. Moore and produced by Sony Pictures Television and Left Bank Pictures for Starz.

Shaun Coming to Scotland in June. Going to take the train over to the Fort then up to Inverness for a few days then come back to the states. That thing I posted just a few minutes ago puts a lease on your iPhone. It’s by Moment. It’s their new one. That place with the stones, all around you the mountain’s are beautiful. That’s for showing us Scotland.

We went to the farm to see THE Outlander stones location .... I stood on the mound where they had just removed the standing stone after filming .... we went on a beautiful summer day in August.... and it was STUNNING .... looking over Kinnloch Rannock and the reservoir .... I felt very blessed. There were LOADS of sheep around when we went xxxx

Wow! what a trooper you are! I hope you’re feeling much warmer now!! Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. I’m way over in the US and not able to go visit anywhere at all. I have always wanted to go visit over there, even before I started watching Outlander. It’s a real treat that you can share these adventures. Thank you.

The weather looked liked Minnesota weather, but here it was beautiful today! Ha! The way to beat that chill that is down to the bone is to get into a really extra warm bath until you sweat. I love both Outlander and Game of Thrones. Of course I have been a Game of Thrones much longer, but I read the Outlander books and had to watch the series and fell in love with it. I was a fan of your channel before Outlander also. :-)

Thanks for taking us on another great journey. Too darned cold Shaun. I lived in Columbus, Ohio back in 1977-78. That winter it was -19 with the wind chill of -60 and it seems you were about that cold! How were they filming a few days before? Did the weather turn really bad overnight? Unbelievable drone views! Stay warm. We so appreciate your vlog!! 😃😁

Thank you for another great piece on the Outlander locations. Even though there are no standing stones there, the place looks amazing. High on a hill, overlooking the world. And even though it was windy today, I can only guess how quiet it is, being up there. You braved the seriously cold for us. I got cold just looking at you! Just a little side note. About a week or two ago, Edinburgh hosted one of the biggest fiber festivals. All about yarn and crafting. The podcasts I watch filmed a lot of the area and it was wonderful seeing the streets and sights and even from the hills above, down on the city. Every one of these people were so taken with Edinburgh and the hospitality, they are all talking about going again next year. www.edinyarnfest.com/home-2018 Thank you again, Shaun, for sharing your remarkable, beautiful country with us all.

Thanks for risking turning into an icicle to bring us those beautiful shots and information. Much appreciated! Also I don't think you are being a traitor by watching GOT. I watched all 7 series recently and enjoyed them, especially the last episode in series 7 when all of the leading cast are in the same scene. The sets and costumes are excellent (as they are in Outlander) and I liked the whole show, but if I had to choose one, then Outlander would get my vote. However, they are completely different shows, so I don't really think it is really possible to compare the two.

It was gale force winds when we were there too - but it was June. It was cold then. You forgot to turn around and look at at Kinloch Rannoch. That is where Claire looks out at night thinking Inverness should have lights and comes to the realization she is no longer in her own time. Season 1 Episode 1 about 48 min in. They are just leaving the hut in the rain when she walks out and says "where is it? Inverness - it should be visible from here" - that view is overlooking Kinloch Rannoch. Rannoch Moor was so recognizable even without the stones and you drive right next to the Schielhallion Mountains (Sam's first Munro).

Actually, I'm glad the plastic "stones" weren't there. It's good to see what it actually looks like, in reality! At the first, it looked like you were afraid you'd fall through the cattle guard, Shaun! lol! Thanks for suffering through the cold and blustery winds so you could film the location! P.S. It should be great fun for Moscow Moon to watch Outlander, and for you to watch GOT! I've seen (and read) both of them - there's no cheating on Outlander going, on. So, ease your mind about that! Also, I like your idea for Scotland the Great! Would you happen to have a "Wee Bonnie Box" for someone who may not have much money to spend? Just an idea. (Last thought: I liked your tee-shirt with Jamie's initials - JAMMF. Why not make that jammf.com?

The site of the fictional Craig Na Dun Stone Circle does incorporate the stone remains of a Glen Lyon style settlement or homestead of indeterminate age which is why you see the circular pattern of stones in the ground as well as a low grass covered bank. It is also why the top of the knoll is fairly flat and does make for a great location to build the circle for Outlander.
