Hey Jimmy! Excellent tutorial and very well explained examples. Much respect for your professional knowledge and your experience. These teaching videos are packed with info and you excel at getting your points across. The whiteboard presentations are the mark of a BOSS who knows his industry and equipment. Work safe, hope your weekend is going well! Doug@ the "ranch"
i finished crane school LAST November and well almost a year later I finally have my 1st job, I LOOOOOVE this video its an amazing refresher, now i just gotta be slow, steady and easy on the controls, and just get better each day.
If you don’t mind me asking, how hard was crane school and where did you go? I’m looking at going to crane school and figuring out if it’s worth it/find a job after/how difficult the math is, etc.
@@barryhansen6854 we had a good time. We went to Universal Studios and Kennedy Space Center. Lots and lots of walking. Also, lots of driving. Hence the reason I look tired in the video. I drove straight through from Florida to home yesterday and today. 22 hours of driving is now my new record. Lol
Excellent video brother!!!!! Every crane operator should carry a cheap little calculator with BIG buttons in the cab with them at all times. They are or will soon be on sale too right now for the back to school specials. Our phones have a calculator in them but would you rather drop a cheap calculator or your phone? Trust me,,,,,you will drop them too,,, from the cab,,,,, most phone screens will NOT survive that fall,,,,, Stay safe out there guys!
I never came across the deduction for parts of line not used, like you said it is crane specific. We deduct all of the line parts for the net capacity. Usually a small number (in the order of a few hundred pounds) when compared to a lift weighing thousands of pounds. Also the weight of any below-the-hook lifting device ie spreader beam etc must be considered. This would be included in your rigging deduction though.......reading the load cart notes is a great piece of advice! Great video!
Hello jim. I agree with the stowed jib, erected jib etc deductions from gross capacity. As stated in crane charts and notes. However i have allways considered headache ball, hook block, rigging and spredder bars etc to be part of the load. Added to the load rather than deducted from the gross capacity. You get a completely different calculation of % of capacity. I humbly sugest you look into this. I know from experience of 44 years that this is a commonly misunderstood concept in lift plans. Kelly.
At 6:40 you say 1# per ft. I was taught 10# per foot. Looks like you measured boom length for weight. They told me to measure tip of boom to ground. -nccco2019 Very interesting. Great video amigo
Do you have more videos on this? I operate a Kobelco CK850 III. I’m getting ready to take my written exam and I’m having trouble with the math among other things.
hey jimmy , long time listener first time caller I've been watching your videos and have definitely been interested in cranes. I see you're in my union. I'm on the east coast as a c branch member of 542. Just wondering how you got your start? Currently i'm studying for my nccco to get my boom truck and rough terrain. and obviously my core. I have learned many things while doing load charts. The more i've done the more comfortable ive gotten with them. i never realized that there's so many deductions with rope and making sure that you have the block correctly reeved and that you arent using too much line as to overload and use as a deduction. is there any hints or tips you could give out ? My grand plans are to get with a crane rental company maxim, amquip, or maybe even thackray. I'm 27 years old and already have my class A . I just have to re certify on a stick 5th wheel truck and i'll be good. have a great weekend your content is really good. especially when using crane terms and seeing them applied in video so i can accurately figure out whats what
Thank you for all the information. I am from Québec Canada and i want to go to school for oparate Crane... They have a psychophisiologic test for selected the best candidat. I wounder if you can make a video of all the basic math and important knowledge so i can practice a bit more before the test. I see you talk about simple calculation like addition and soustraction etc. And more specificly Pi r2. (thank you for this information) But do you have any more specific calculation?? Thank you again, and good job!!
I know this is a very old video & Someone May have asked but do you mind specifying a few cranes that you know or have experienced that you DO in fact have to calculate for unused parts of line ? Or types of work/ Safety officials that require such practice ? I love your comprehensive clarity on the specifics It’ll be a great asset to my understanding if I had that insight
@@ToTheTopCrane I have often thought that if you, ron pratt, lets dig 18, and brandon (and many others) got together with Mike Row works and put together an online university of the trades. it could show that working with your hands is fun, cool and exciting. we need to get more young people to take up building things.
Hey jimmy that was a great job explaining it!!! 👌🏽 I have a question...What does the jib do for the crane does it increase its lifting capacity or just extend the boom more?
So IF you forgot to add in the extra part line, where would the breakage be on the crane? or would the computer simply say "Not gonna happen" Thanks for another great vid
Most of the time we know what the rigging weighs beforehand. A stowed jib makes a big difference sometimes. So, it definitely has to be accounted for. It gets missed by lots of people though. So much so, that some jobsites remove the jib completely. Many thanks for watching! 🙂
Please make video on Calculating values of : Lifting Gear , Equipment weight of Tools and Plants ? Load on each leg (in Ton) ? SWL of D-SHACKLE , Bow-shackle ?
We are supposed to understand our charts and be able to do the math and know the weight of our picks and not rely on the computer. Our lmi is an operator aid not a replacement for understanding what we are doing.
Crane Fan I understand that. But I have seen some of jimmy’s videos where the estimated weight was different than the actual. It would seem that without the on board scales and equipment it would be easier to exceed your capacity.
Agreed. What I’m emphasizing is that as crane operators we need to develop and maintain our skills to make the calculations manually, and not end up like the person that blindly follows their gps into the lake and drowns
Is there a standard calculation formula for the crane capicty I mean if I know the radius and the main boom length can I figure out how much can a crane lift without the load chart
Not to be picky but, in a triangle the horizontal is "A" the vertical is "B" and the angle is "C". So, A square + B square equal C square. On your crane you said the boom was 200' long, the vertical leg or "B" is shorter, or C square minus A square equals B square. (If memory still works on my end) Thank you for a great whiteboard lesson.
This is good great job, can you go over more questions, I'm in school and I failed this part of testing because I didn't understand can you guide a little more
Did you end up graduating school? Was it worth going to? I’m looking at going to crane school. Just nervous it will be hard to find a job after and that the math will be too much for me
While gross vrs net I am well knowledge on However!! I was not aware of the extra weight limitation... An extra calculations... If I am plated for 80,000 an the rig weighs say 37,000 tare my Net weight would be 43,000 load capacity. If you know the load your hauling an manufacture load capacity say it is 42,500 .. your 500 under right? ""Wrong!!"" Most equipment manufacturer weight is given and dry terms. This is not allowed for the weight of fuel or oil or coolant or grease or mud .. an then we haft to add in the weight of chains and binders. Dot weight master lives to get into my billfold! But I see there more calculations then just gross, tare and net allowed involved and setting up the crane for a lift....That was a great video even for an old fart like me ...Thanks !!
