The rarest of the 421 Super Duty Pontiac's is the 63 Grand Prix 421 SD. Only 3 ever built. But any 421 SD Pontiac is really scarce. Im a Mopar guy first but also a big fan of Pontiac. Especially the full size Bonneville's, Catalina's, and Grand Prix's that also happened to be fast. Mopar and Pontiac always seemed to be more performance oriented than any other manufacturers. The 421 Super Duty cars are the meanest ever produced by Pontiac.The street version of the 421 was no slouch either...the 421 HO. Even the 57 Bonneville and the 58 Bonneville with the 370 and Tri Power or the really rare factory fuel injection setup were some of the fastest cars on the street in their day as well as the early 60's Grand Prix, Bonneville, and Catalina with the High Performance 389 and a 4 speed . My favorite Pontiac's ever made are the 62 Catalina bubble top 421 SD, the 65 Catalina 2+2 with the Tri Power 421 HO and a 4 speed, and the 69 Grand Prix SJ with the 428 HO and a 4 speed. All 64-67 2+2's and 69-72 GP SJ/SSJ's were really nice cars. Would love a 69 GTO or Firebird Ram Air IV or a 70 1/2 RA IV or 73 455 SD Trans Am though. Really any 64-73 GTO or 67-74 Firebird or T/A would do. Pontiac built some of the fastest and coolest cars on the street and on the race tracks from the late 50's up into the early to mid 70's...and even a couple in the late 70's...the 77-79 Trans Am 400-4 speed(not the Olds 403/auto) and the 77 Can Am also with the Pontiac 400. Any T/A or Can Am sold in California automatically got the Olds 403 because the Pontiac 400 couldn't meet California emissions standards anymore and the 455 was discontinued after 1976

Who needs a radio when you have a Pontiac engine singing beutifull music?

Nothing like the sound of a 421 SD with the exhaust cutouts open. What a monster

Awesome. Prolly worth $150k by now. Takes me back to my youth. I sold my 62, 348 HP Grand Prix in 1965 the day before I got drafted. Bought another on this week 56 years later.

I read in a magazine that back in the day they used an accelerometer inside the car and ran the numbers it these cars were closer to 450 hp from the factory.

I saw one of those (1962) at a car show 10-15 years ago and they started it up, it was deafening, but a good deafening! 🤣If I could have any muscle car it would be one of those.

Pretty sure it is worth way more, original super duty catalinas from 62 and 63 are worth as much if not more in most cases than judges. Can easily get 6 figures out of this car... literally the holy grail of Pontiac Motors

I was just looking at a 63 Bonneville 389, non factory 4 speed on Columbus Ohio Craigslist. I'm a GM guy through and through, but except for the 68 69 70 mopars, I don't like that body, I love them all. Even Fords, just don't tell anybody I'd drive a Ford...

The downside to these cars was that the "Swiss Cheese" frames often developed earlier-than-intended stress cracks causing frames to shatter at the rear. Another problem was the aluminum headers which would melt after continued use. Overall, they made impressive runs but had horrible durability.

A stock 62 421 SD Catalina would annihilate a stock 62 409 Chevy Bel Air. The 421SD made about 80 more horsepower than a Chevy 409/409 did. I've witnessed it on an engine dyno

I have a Video of these cars racing Max Wedge, Hemi, ford 429's, chevy 409's. SD 421's. In the end it came down to 2 Max wedge's and one 421 SD. The 421 ran High 10's but was beat by a Max wedge that ran 10's also.

@JusticeYouWant2010 You man, know your facts! I can't afford any Pontiacs on my wish list currently. They are, in no specific order... 1965 GTO, 1965 Bonneville or Catalina. All of couse with a Tri Power and 4 speed. Convertible or hardtop. I saw two beee-uteeful 65's at the next Musclepalooza, both owned by same fellow. I vidded him leaving the event. One lite yellow, one Iris Mist, (Evening Orchid, Chevy color too!) I've got a late 50's Corvette on the list too, and a 409, and ....

@jeremythompson9122
@jeremythompson9122 5 лет назад
Mopar built a 426 Max Wedge in 63 with 13.5:1 compression. They also had an 11.0:1 version that was a bit more streetable. I believe the Pontiac 421 SD had 12.5:1 compression

Nah I have to say once the racing Hemi came out and the GM restrictions came out that limited GM performance overall. Remember with Mopar you could buy a factory dragster if you had the cash but if you wanted one from Ford or even the racing engine you where put on a list and chosen from that list and had to be a sponsored Ford racer. GM as far as competitiveness after the 64 ban didnt really come into its own until the 70's

@johntempest267
@johntempest267 4 года назад
No 409 could touch this thing. The 421, 426, and 427 are why Chevy dropped the 409 and designed the 396. The 421 SD made 488 hp on Butler's dyno in factory trim. Chevy wouldn't equal this motor until the debut of the L88. (In '67)

That's why I dislike the Purest like I do... they should have there own car show away from the guy's who actually built there car's to drive and enjoy what a waste of machinery
