In todays video we run through a very important reason why you should be extra careful when building an engine without correct knowledge and measuring equipment, things could end badly. We try not to mention the E30 today but get a very exciting delivery, but it’s not the body kit

Hello Lee, Great vlog...l think your find that the oil in the sump will go to the front under braking unless you plan on spinning 180 on the brakes first...😂

Always pleased to see how thorough you are. It's not to surprising to have the clearance close up a hair with a fastener change/upgrade. Keep the E30 content coming! I can't wait to see it burning up the track!

It states quite clearly in the ARP hardware instructions that the housing bores need to me measured and align honed if necessary. I don't even bother test fitting main studs in a block, I go ahead and cut the main caps, install the hardware and align hone the block. Occasionally, you need to drill the cap holes slightly larger if the stud pulls the cap to one side.

Looking forward to the E30 build and pleased to see more bits arriving for the car. You kindly mentioned that you hoped it was nice where your viewers are. At present it is 19 C with a slight NE breeze and not a cloud in the sky at Boyne Island, Queensland.

I rebuilt a Fiat V6 as fitted in the130 back in the day. They were a large Granada size car. All ran well, apart from a small knock from the bottom 😕. I called a Fiat dealer who advised me that if I had the distributor drive 180 deg out, the fuel pump cam, (driven off this) would just kiss the crank on its way round! I turned it 180 and the noise stopped! 😅

Can't wait to see progress on the M3 engine! It will be good because we will then see the engine in the car when you take it on the track! Have you got an estimate as to how long the bodywork and paint will take? If so then you could try and do the engine in that time frame, obviously fitting it in around customers work. You're so close to 40,000 subs! Nearly there!

Plastigauge has its fair share of knockers but it has saved my backside more than once. I am a heavy diesel bloke, I never build an engine without using it.

Thanks for your informative videos, after browsing for a while I subscribed a few weeks ago as I used to be a toolmaker, now retired, and am familiar with most of your machines. When I started my apprenticeship I was even on shaping machines, which is a mystery to most people I suspect. I've worked in lots of places making car related parts like prototypes for the motor industry eventually working on wire eroding machines. We just got back from a meal to celebrate our 51st anniversary and the first thing I wanted to do is watch your latest episode. Thanks again for sharing your experiences. Regards, Bob M. South Wales

Lee, I noticed that on the Golf R there were no threads showing above the nuts and a couple looked like there was a thread or so below the top of the nut. Is this normal or are the studs a little too short?

Why would anybody have an issue with plastigauge? I always use it on bike engine builds when you are trying to match rod grades to journal ID marks, the manufacturers' graphs / bearing colours aren't always exact.

But why are you even using ARP studs? They can't do anything that the stock parts can't do .Except cause problems.
@georgebettiol8338
@georgebettiol8338 Год назад
The OEM provided studs that satisfied the 'stock' power output - and in such cases are more than adequate. The said engine is being modified to generate 450 hp which is significantly more than stock, a situation that could result in permanent 'stud stretch' if standard studs are used. ARP studs possess a higher tensile strength than 'typical' 12.9 Grade studs - so can withstand higher tensile loads.
@1magnit
@1magnit Год назад
@@georgebettiol8338 You're just being scammed by the marketing machine. If you apply the mathematics and physics to the problem the bolt torque translates to clamping force which opposes cylinder pressure. The cylinder pressure translates to a downwards force which acts on the bolts. Take the 2 figures and make a comparison .If you're too lazy to work it out then you're doing nothing other than guessing. You can't even figure out that horsepower has nothing to do with anything as it's just a product of torque and RPM.
@georgebettiol8338
@georgebettiol8338 Год назад
I don't wish to delve into the minutiae of internal combustion igntion engines and the engineering disciplines of stress-strain analysis and fatigue analysis of materials. However, if you are so convinced that the material properties of a main bearing stud and/or big-end (conrod) stud have no impact on its durability, then I recommend that you replace your engine's main and conrod bearings with Grade 2 studs/bolts and see what happens. As an aside, recommend that you invesitage what the 1980s F1 BMW engineers did to ensure the 50's designed 4cyl 1.5 litre (M10) production engine (then designated M12/13 turbo) was suitable for the rigours of F1 racing - where it was estimated to produce 1450hp in qualifying trim - and around 1000hp in race trim. To put it simply, it did not contain M10 'standard' internals and most importantly did not use the M10's standard fastners.
