On today’s episode of Wisconsin fisherman were after some jerk bait crappies! Fishing for pre-spawn crappies up here can be a real thrill, especially when you're using jerk baits and your Humminbird side imaging. First, get your fish finder all set up and tweak those side imaging settings so they match the depth and clarity of the water. Then, start scanning shallow bays, points, and any submerged structures-these are the spots where crappies like to hang out before they spawn. On your display, you're looking for little white dots or clusters of them, which are usually crappies. Pick a jerk bait that looks like the local baitfish and cast it past the school you found, using a twitch-pause-retrieve method to make it look like an injured fish. Mix up your speed and cadence until you find what makes them bite. Keep an eye on the water temp too; crappies are most active between 55°F and 65°F. If jerk baits aren’t doing the trick, switch to small jigs or soft plastics. Sneak up on your spots quietly, using your trolling motor as little as possible so you don't spook the fish. By using your Humminbird’s tech and some good old jerk bait action, you’ll up your chances of landing a nice haul of pre-spawn crappies.

Great video. At 5:07 when you saw the crappies, you caught them off the right side According to that Side Image though wouldn’t they be behind you a little more behind you?

Great vid Kyle, Man that'd be a great lake to drag a small beetle spin and hammer those craps.

If you don't mind me asking, when did you film this? I was just up north last weekend and decided not to fish because of the weird weather. clearly, I should have gone out!

I switched to crappie fishing a few years ago in WI cuz I got tired of how Yuppy the walleye fishing got. Seeing people with $80k boats, side imaging, Livescope....who possess zero fishing skill just spend more $ and ask people how to catch them. Aarrggh...Anyway its been rewarding with my little swimbaits and cheapo 2D graph actually learning where crappie are in the summer, and why. Not many people around here know how to so after the spawn I have them to myself. This past week they were just under surface, all over the lake chasing mayflie and damsel fly larvae.

Aren’t pike (and to a lesser degree muskie) the biggest problem with this technique though? Especially since you're throwing a bigger lure out. I know there’s ways around their teeth but it doesn’t help with catching crappie.
@Wisconsin_Fisherman

I only caught one small pike doing this. I made a really far to shore cast and got a snake. However since the crappies are suspended you’ll get less pike
@PrimalFlamesPCE
@PrimalFlamesPCE Месяц назад
@@Wisconsin_Fisherman fair point, I suppose it depends on the lakes you fish too.

I had that problem this past weekend. Any fast moving lure would get destroyed by hammer handle pike. Wasnt a complete fix, but using small 2" swimbait fished as slow as possible prevented most nuisance pike and also got a few bull bluegill doing that.

@tieoneon1614 Yeah it's kind of hard to avoid the little hammerhandles when everything is keying in on weed edges in May, (at least in the shallower WI lakes.) I've thrown out 3/4 inch tube jigs on bobbers that have been hit by pike.
