On today’s episode of Wisconsin fisherman were after some jerk bait crappies! Fishing for pre-spawn crappies up here can be a real thrill, especially when you're using jerk baits and your Humminbird side imaging. First, get your fish finder all set up and tweak those side imaging settings so they match the depth and clarity of the water. Then, start scanning shallow bays, points, and any submerged structures-these are the spots where crappies like to hang out before they spawn. On your display, you're looking for little white dots or clusters of them, which are usually crappies. Pick a jerk bait that looks like the local baitfish and cast it past the school you found, using a twitch-pause-retrieve method to make it look like an injured fish. Mix up your speed and cadence until you find what makes them bite. Keep an eye on the water temp too; crappies are most active between 55°F and 65°F. If jerk baits aren’t doing the trick, switch to small jigs or soft plastics. Sneak up on your spots quietly, using your trolling motor as little as possible so you don't spook the fish. By using your Humminbird’s tech and some good old jerk bait action, you’ll up your chances of landing a nice haul of pre-spawn crappies.
