I agree, they should've given him a lot more scenes and tried much harder than they did to fool the audience into thinking Brio was the Big Bad and Cortex was reformed to make Cortex's true motives more of an actual twist. And yeah, a boss battle at some point would've been nice.
I would get Game Overs often enough that I'd feel so bad when Cortex said "no no no, Crash... i said bring me the *CRYSTALS!!!!!*" (and yes, I left some caps out to signify his volume. :P Like a parent scoldling you.) But now I find it both intimidating AND funny. XD
For all the flak we can give Mind Over Mutants for, it actually gave us the most wicked Cortex and the only time we ever see Cortex get one over Uka-Uka.
The idea that Cortex falls off the airship with Brendan O'Brien's voice and then continues to fall with Clancy Brown's voice has always been funny to me
Crash Bandicoot 2 was my *_VERY_* first Playstation game I have played, back in that time, I couldn't understand what the heck just happened on Cortex falling off a blimp, then today, looking at the final battle in Crash Bandicoot 1 ...it finally makes sense now.
How I miss the days when Clancy Brown voiced Dr. Cortex, despite being a family-friendly game, he made the villain sound sinister. Lex Lang, however, just makes Cortex sound like a childish cartoon baddie
That evil laughter in the end always sends shiver down my spine even though ive watched it since i was 11 when it came out. And the disappointment sound from Cortex when he foiled his plan was so genuine. Makes me always dismiss Lex, cant take that Cortex seriously
I wonder how the sound is pitched up in this PAL version. Even the music in Cortex holo scenes is pitched up. I thought this only happen in movies. Only the main soundtrack remains normal.
Clancy brown nailed cortex voice! That laugh at the end was epic! He was the best cortex no doubt. However, I think Lex Lang makes a great cortex too. Lex does the funny cortex well but Clancy is the best evil cortex no doubt haha.
Cortex: "No, no, NO, Crash! To save the world, I need crystals. CRYSTALS!! One more time, they look like this. Crystals, Crash! Go back through one of those doors and bring me crystals!" XD
"Look above the doorways! Above each, there is a big... _CRYSTAL..._ shaped slot! Clear all five Crystal slots in this Warp Room by retrieving one Crystal from _each_ of the five areas! Only after we have filled every slot in this room can we continue... on our quest! ...This is the _last time_ I remind you."
I think that was the reason why Clancy Brown was replaced by Lex Lang in 2004 The parents’s think Clancy’s Cortex Voice was to Mean for the kids. And they wrote letters about it.
@@Pablo-312 If so, I don't know what those parents were expecting from the VILLAINS. And they're not supposed to be friendly villains either. And it's not like they have so much humanizing depth that they're not supposed to sound mean.
This is the game where Dr. Neo Cortex was at his most intimidating in the series. You couldn’t exactly take him seriously in the first game with the funny voice he had from Brendan O’Brien. Cortex spent most of his time in Warped being either cowed or possessed by an even greater evil. He was slowly slipping into goofy ness in Wrath Of Cortex and Nitro Kart. Twinsanity definitely cemented Cortex as a hugely comedic idiot villain ever since (which I do enjoy). But this game is definitely where you can recognize Dr. Neo Cortex as a terrifying threat (the holograms and Clancy Brown especially help)
I know people often like to think Crash was just easily tricked by Cortex, but I like to think that Crash only helped Cortex because he liked how shiny the crystals looked and wanted to keep them for himself for a collection. It helps give an explanation as to why he attacked N-Gin at least, Crash didn’t want his new shines taken away from him. XD
I remember my older sister and I couldn't understand most of the dialogue, we grew up in a noisy house lol. When I was little I asked her what the story of this game was about and she told me "I think Cortext is going to kill Coco if Crash doesn't find the crystals"
Mr. Krabs and Dr. Cortex have several things in common 1.) Same voice actor (Clancy Brown) 2.) Obsessed with one object 3.) Manipulated the main hero for selfish purposes.
I think my favourite thing about this game is that you get a sense of how lonely and scared crash must have felt. Crash gets mysteriously teleported against his will into the dark warp room 1, being told to collect crystals from unknown areas of the world by Cortex's holograms, with Coco's transmissions getting cutoff as she desperately tries to warn crash. As the player, you feel Crash's confusion, not knowing whether cortex is the bad guy or if Brio is. Then once you make the unavoidable mistake of collecting the 25th crystal, you finally find out what's been going on and it's down to you to stop Cortex before he enslaves the world. It really put a lot of weight onto the final boss battle and made it super panicky, which I think the N. Sane trilogy missed out. Playing this for the first time as little kid on the ps1 in your bedroom with the lights off was truly the most amazing way to experience this game. 8:18 still gives me goosebumps now.
Same as a kid there was so much mystery with who should you trust. I felt Crash in Crash 1 had it tough. Fell off the window and washed in a beach. Had to to fight through 3 island go up the castle. All for Tawna who broke up with him.
@@cuccamunga The fact that Tawna's nowhere to be seen despite the fact saving her was the point of the first game; Coco's apparently Crash's sister despite the fact she was never seen or mentioned in the first game; and the fact there are even more mutated animals running around despite the fact the Evolvo-Ray and original Cortex Vortex were destroyed. And that isn't even half of it.
@@LuznoLindo If you beat Crash 1 with 100% completion, the credits tell you that Tawna chose Pinstripe over Crash. I don't consider Coco's introduction to be a plot hole because it's the first thing that's established in Crash 2. Just because we weren't told about her or are kept in the dark about her origins doesn't make it a plot hole. A plot hole is when something in the plot contradicts abother element to the plot or is a crucial missing element to piecing together a storyline. Learning Crash has a sister between the first and second game was never relevant to either game's story. Also just because the evolvo ray or the original Cortex Vortex was destroyed, doesn't mean Cortex, N. Brio, or N. Gin didn't have access to a supply of mutated animals that were already finished. And isn't there an obvious time jump between Cortex falling off the blimp to Cortex being on the new Cortex Vortex before the game starts regardless?
I've always like how abrupt the games of the original Crash trilogy begin. The way this game starts is a perfect example of that; no introduction, no recap, just immediately starting with the end of the first game's final boss battle.
That is true until crash collected all of the gems and deliver them to n brio to start up his laser and fired the laserbeam that destroyed the cortex vortex forever
4:06 the only Cutscene removed from N. Sane Trilogy, because the "Save/Load" walls from the original, have been replaced by the Boss Battles and riding the platform does no trigger them, which make sense. Also I don't understand why N. Brio is on Crash's side, maybe I'm missing something...?
I think in some unused dialogue in one of the games he mentions Tawna convinced him to be good and break away from Cortex at some point during the first game
Brio was always pushed around by Cortex in the first game despite being the one that actually invented most of their stuff while Cortex took all the credit and didn't listen to him.
10:55 💥💥💥💥💥💥 It’s funny, because in this version of the cut scene, it’s a lot more explosive when the laser touches the vortex, but in the insane trilogy, it’s more like it’s just cutting the thing in half and then it falling back to earth🤔
1:39 No, no, no, Crash… I said bring me the CRYSTALS! Now, get. Back. In. There. 1:49 No, no, NO, Crash! To save the world, I need crystals. CRYSTALS! One more time, they look like this. Crystals, Crash! Go back through one of those doors and bring me crystals! 2:05 Look above the doorways. Above each, there is a big CRYSTAL-shaped slot. Fill all five crystal slots in this warp room by retrieving one crystal from each of the five areas. Only after we have filled all of the slots in this room can we continue on our quest. THIS IS THE LAST TIME I WILL REMIND YOU. 8:05 AARRRGHH!! WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM, BANDICOOT?!?! I WILL NOT ASK YOU AGAIN TO *BRING ME THE CRYSTALS!* Obtain the remaining five crystals, Crash, and BRING THEM TO ME! You’re welcome.
@@jesusmedina6751 Crash might be a bit stupid but I don't think he's stupid enough to mistaken N.Gin for N.Brio. I think it was more of Crash thought N.Gin was another of N.Brio's minions like the previous bosses. You have to take note even though Cortex told Crash to give the crystals to N.Gin Crash has never met or seen N.Gin up until this point cuz N.Gin didn't work for Cortex in the first game so he has no idea what N.Gin looks like and probably thought N.Gin was trying to trick him. Yes his mech says NG on it but I don't know for sure if Crash can read.
My very first videogame from my childhood❤. I was 5 when i played this in 2002. But to be honest as a kid i could not speak English neither writing or understanding. But as an adult i completely understand the story. And i must say that the story and gameplay are amazing. I've always wondered where N. Brio is staying if he is not with Cortex and N. Gin on that space station.
