FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

I was the flight advisor for our local EAA chapter. Our chapter members were building a total of five RV’s. Before I did my initial first flight I called Vans. I talked to their test flight manager for over an hour. He gave me VOLUMES of critical advice. I took notes as fast as I could and after hanging up I typed up four and one half pages of vital information that (each time) kept me and the airplane safe. This approach revealed numerous builder induced flaws I would have never caught on my own.

Having an aircraft checked and approved by a certified mechanic was a process I understood, but a test pilot validation is all new - it makes a lot of sense, especially for an aircraft like an RV, where everything LOOKS as it should but may actually have flight characteristics that are not ideal or worse. Smart step to do this 👍

In my younger days as an aeromodeller, I would seek out one of our club's instructors to maiden my newest bird. As most all of my models are built by me over several months or even years, the emotional investment can be overwhelming. Better to have a trusted, competent pilot who is more detached. Now that I'm older and a bit saltier, I just do it myself. "If I build it, it will fly."

@@krotchlickmeugh627 I've always maintained that anyone can do this, but it's not for everyone. And model aviation sure isn't what it used to be. Lucky for me, I got started when we all built our own models and had a club instructor. And, with all of the satisfaction that comes with that, I can't imagine not building my own models. And no foam! Model aviation, it's lifetime of learning. P.S. In the interest of full disclosure, I do own one ARF, a Hangar 9 Christen Eagle. I just could not resist! Okay, I also have a foamie, a UMX Beast. It was just too cute to pass up. Next up is a 40'' Stinson Voyager from a Dumas kit. Always something on the board... P.P.S. I love fixing my fleet and updating them all the time. I also have some eflite jets from modern day because they are amazing. I also have almost every single UMX airplane horizon ever built. I dont mind foam. Its the people that make them i dont like. Horizon hobby single handedly destroyed the hobby. Buying up all the competition and not reproducing their planes. By making cheap foam crap but thats just it. For a long time it was cheap. Now its like $900 bucks for what used to cost us $250. Then amazon and google come along and lobby the FAA and regulate the hell out of our airspace and our fields. I grew up in the balsa arf era. The world models and the like. I taught myself how to repair and recover my crashed planes. Taught myself about battery chemistry and tuning engines. Actually led me into owning my own business and having a career in powersports repair. Im only 26. Im soon buying a quicksilver ultralight and also have 15 hours in a Cessna. This hobby is the greatest thing that ever happened to me and im losing it to government over reach and corporatism /monopolization. Looks like you and your RV are in good hands. When I did the test flight on my plane after the engine rebuild I had a lengthy list of things to check, as did the shop who did the work. Indeed, their service manager came with me on the first flight to confirm the engine's performance and the plane's rigging. And that's with a certified plane, not a homebuilt.

I tested my own KR2 as a 60 hrs total time pilot sel with a 1915 CC VW type one . The KR2 is a true delight to fly and has no bad habits . Its really a very strong sporty little plane and handles great . It flew with finger tip control. The really demanding part of the flight was the super sensitive elevator or pitch sensitivity during landing. This was compounded by being a taildragger on a very stiff main gear . I made all wheel landings . After flying the KR2 the spam cans were very labor intensive and were not fun like my little agile aerobatic toy . The Type 1 VW by Steve Bennett never failed me for the 850 hours it flew . My first flight as was the case for many 1st flights started as a high speed taxi test . It seemed the only limitations the plane had was the pilot.

The builder/maintainer hat is very different from the pilot hat and they are often at conflict. It is very difficult to go back and forth and you have to be able to fly the plane without being distracted by that builder role. There are different opinions on who should do the initial test flights - a lot of people think that if you built it, having someone else fly it is akin to getting married and having someone else take your new spouse on the honeymoon. Personally, while I really wanted to do my first flight, I thought it would be best left to someone with a whole lot more experience and no emotional attachment to the airplane. No regrets about that decision. I rode along, left seat, but didn't do any of the flying on the first flight.

It's hard to believe the Titan T-51 Mustang was totalled after that landing. I thought he did a great job of flying and editing the video of it. It's pretty clear that automotive engines with non-redundant ignition systems and reduction units don't belong in airplanes..
@arthurvilain7270
@arthurvilain7270 2 года назад
I'm not that surprised to be honest. The prop struck the ground, which probably damaged the whole engine assembly. The entire belly and right wing dragged on the ground, likely causing quite a bit of structural damage all over the airframe. Could it have been repaired ? Maybe. Would it have made financial sense ? Probably not.

Modern technology is orders of magnitude more reliable when integrated correctly. The fact that there were multiple isolated failures in quick succession indicates that there were fundamental problems upstream from the power-plant. I'd speculate that the bent landing gear put a very high (and unanticipated) load on an electric retract actuator that pulled down voltage in the only electrical bus. The engine ECU, ignition and EFI were then starved. A small and lightweight li-po battery pack wired as a redundant/isolated engine electrical supply could've given the pilot time to line up the plane and destroy it on the centerline instead. Any psru failure had to be related to the prop strike.
@daniellewis1789
@daniellewis1789 2 года назад

@Mammux
@Mammux 2 года назад
I think when you watch the ES videos you see that he is really really reluctant to jump out, or do anything else that will damage or destroy the airplane. At the expense of his own safety. Personally, if I was in a plane where the engine had stopped at altitude, I would stop caring about the plane and start caring exclusively about my survival and not hurting innocent people on the ground. I guess that´s one of many reasons why people don´t hire me to test flight their airplanes :D
@billbrisson
@billbrisson 2 года назад
perhaps "Jump out" might not be the best course of action, but I agree, a test pilot with much less "skin in the game" as it were, would be more likely to perform an emergency landing in a manner that will save his own hide as apposed to trying to "save the plane"

Having done first flights and test flights on several RC aircraft (some my own design, some with complex systems and costing several thousand dollars) I can only just begin to understand the stress and anxiety that must come from a project like test flying your own RV. My RV6 has just over 500 hours on it when I got it, and feel quite comfortable flying it, but I would be a nervous wreck with an aircraft like that Delta amphibian :0 I'm sure there are a few of us who would like to see more about that Delta project, Has it made it's first flight yet?

What was causing the lean cylinder? Leaving me hanging. Can't just go flashing spark plugs at people like that.

I'm really curious why Dave has a working 486 SX 33 PC in his lab. Also, given its age, it's remarkably clean!

@@c1ph3rpunk yeah for me it was Steve's trip to the Reno Air races. As an engineering student in glad Steve featured him, as Elliot is an engineer I'd like to learn from and work with some day, even if it's just hiring him for advice on a kit plane.

@@deSloleye 30 year engineer myself albeit in a different field, IT and security, the mindset you take into anything is critical. It still amazes me how when in “the crap” you don’t realize you’re there, you go off pure training and instinct. His experience, instinct and pure gut kicked in. But .. at the same time we can learn from these situations. If you’re so arrogant you think you’ve learned it all and know everything I won’t fly (or work) with you. This is what creates instinct via experience.

@@c1ph3rpunk his debriefs are riveting. The next trick is to incorporate those lessons into the instinctive parts of your brain so they're applied when it goes south. The astronaut adage of "there's no problem so bad you can't make it worse" warns not to just react, but you still need to do smart things very fast.

Now that I have watched further into it, this looks to be a seaplane, similar to an R/C model that was popular in the '80's ( ok, watched it through, confirmed based on Dyke Delta )

You know, oddly enough it was much easier to get back in November when I bought it. It took monitoring the Stockdrops discord for a while but 3090s were attainable, at retail prices (still stupid expensive, yes). Now they seem to be totally unobtainable. The sad part is I use it like maybe once a week. Too busy.
