I think Koreans tend to have a mentality where women are expected to show your best sides and act very perfect in a relationship, so since sooyung is so straight forward and speaks her mind, when they were younger they probably didn't think she would be the typical Korean man's ideal type (iirc did Tiffany once say she thought sooyoung would suit a foreigner?) But she met someone who accepted and loved her for who she is and is someone who she can be her true self with, which is definitely a contributing factor to them being able to have a long lasting, healthy relationship
