This terrific film, made just months after we went to War, is a gem. All the respect for our Nation and all its promise is secured in the line of duty by THE GREATEST GENERATION.
One of Tyrone Power's best movies. It does get preachy at the end about the US Navy fighting World War II, but that's because the war's outcome was still in doubt when the film was being filmed. The ending wouldn't have been like that if this film had been made in late 1944 or early 1945, when the Allies knew Japan and Germany would inevitably be defeated.
Very good film. It is only 1:45:54 h long. May be the love scenes are stretched out a little much for us modern audience. But during the war time (1943) it must have been relaxing to the audience, a temporary relief from wartime worries. The commando scene is incredibly well done, and the fire on the sea too! ... even better than 'die hard' scenes!!!! Thanks for uploading.
Fun facts; both Dana Andrews and Harry Morgan never served in the military during WW 2. However both made several war pictures. Actors who enlisted into military during WW 2 often had their rank and branch of service in the screen credits. Tyrone Powers birth name was Tyrone Powers III. Whats funny, his son was Tyrone Jr. TP retired from the USMCR as a major. Anne Baxter is the granddaughter of Frank Lloyd Wright. You might also know Baxter for her iconic role in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. Director Archie Mayo also directed THE PETRIFIED FOREST. Dana Andrew's younger brother is actor William Forrest Andrews AKA Steve Forrest. Navy had black cooks in WW 2 movies; THE CAINE MUTINY, MEN OF HONOR, PEARL HARBOR, U-571. There was another movie with the same name made in 1997. Here are other sub movies that won Oscars; CRASH DIVE, THE ENEMY BELOW, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, TORPEDO RUN, U-571.
When I watch these movies it does remind me of the brave men and woman who fought in all wars for our great countries , both the Uk and the U.S , now I look at these country’s and wonder what the hell has happened to them , so many ungrateful intitled brats and weak leaders. Such a shame .,
Dana Andrews who wasn't able to serve in the War tried to make up for it by doing these War pictures. This culminated in The Best Years of Our Lives. That was a picture he must have done research or took a ride in B-17 in the States to get an understanding of being a Bombardier.
Poor Lt Ward, seems like every time he gets settled he gets thrown into another type of vessel and to be sent back to the first place he served seems so unfair, I think “uncle Bob” won’t be very popular with his family, most dangerous post in the Navy.
Decent movie. Skip romance stuff and go to sub action with is good. Has a surprising thing dine by the captian that have never seen in movies before. Nifty.
The XO was a lieutenant when he met his captain , when he met his girlfriend he was a lieutenant commander quick promotion 😮😮😮😮😮😮well that’s the Navy🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊
Despite the other ‘conservatives’ Comments this movie is real life and I Love Jesus and I love life as He said I am the way the truth and the. Life. Great movie Tyrone Lowe I never liked until now
Where is that America??? Beautiful people both men and women! Clean, well manned! Beautiful English! Dignity and honor! What is wrong with our country today?! Are we doomed?!
Not just "doomed"....but ready to IMPLODE from the $34 TRILLION DOLLAR SLAVE DEBT system designed towards a so-called 'Great Reset' for the New World Order, consider the 'U$$A Experiment' as finished!
The CSS Hunley during the War of Northern Aggression was the first submersible to successfully sink an enemy ship. German U-Boats were feared during WWI and WWII.
U.S. Torpedoes were defective. The American Mark 14 torpedo was highly defective and not fixed until around September 1943. For almost two years of war it had a huge combat failure rate of like 50%+. It was a very serious issue that had three causes. The causes had to be identified and fixed one by one.
Have you got it yet look at the picture AI generated it says Tyrone Power at the top and above the womens head it says Dana Andrews I know who they all are and what they look like
Or manover to torpedo it surely. certainly not just sit on bottom to be depth charged. smoking no less in air that can not be freshened for who knows how long. not quite realistic is it?
Hollywood. So predictable. Always a beautiful woman for the main character with a romance stuffed in. For Pete’s sake it’s supposed to be a war picture but Hollywood always has to add romance all the time. At least it had morality back then compared to today’s graphic sexual scenes and guttural language. Many actors did actually serve in WW2. Kudos to them all. Still liked the movie though. Ann Baxter is very easy on the eyes.
I liked this film when I was younger Tyrones character is a slime on rewatch he blackmail the girl constantly pushing himself on her what about her current he's not a bad guy or evil but I can't stand ward as an adult.
25:22 Maxim Litvinov, before he became Russian ambassador, was USSR Foreign Minister. April 1939 he made a formal proposal to the British ambassador for a triple pact of collective security between Britain, France and the USSR. The USSR wanted to forge an anti-Nazi Germany alliance which would have prevented WW2, but both Britain and France were not supportive of Litvinov’s proposal.
Where was the cannon that hit the sub after it cleared the net when the sub was in the harbour? if it was undamaged why didn't it sink the sub then? oh Hollywood what a charmed world you live in.
The movie was shot in technicolor at 00:49. There were some movies at this time shot in color. They were few and far between. This isn’t a colorized movie. The color looks pretty good. This was a good movie to shot in color during the war. Besides the romance there is the propaganda element. A PT boat sinking a submarine with depth charges. This wasn’t standard for a PT boat. Even though PT boat training was conducted on the east coast, PT boats were mostly used in the Pacific. Then there was the pitch to uncle Bob about how all the different ships support each other at the end of the movie. Tyrone Power was a dashing figure. Loved him playing Zorro. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
@@martingreenberg870 I saw this on a weekend at a small local British cinema back in the mid-'50s and I can still remember its vivid colour that made it superior to all the low-budget, black-and-white British-made pictures that were shown there most of the time.
@@None-zc5vg black & white are far superior to the unrealistic color films of those days. Much much sharper & more defined than the phoney colur film stock that was available
I want Washington DC to send the five-star general down here that I met with so he can straighten out in North Carolina that's doing me so wrong in the country. He said he fought in the desert wars or at least he was a general during that time Congress send him down here back in 2002 to Spruce Pine to meet with me his help is needed desperately in North Carolina.
