Loved the video, it looks like some of the terrain would have out matched my KLR 650 ( with my skills) . none the less you are an inspiration for sure. Aside from the ignition problems , do you have any regrets on choosing the DR for your adventures? I choose the KLR due to my planned adventures will require more highway commuting to adventure spots than the adventure spots themselves. I understand the DR is more suited for what your doing than the KLR & the KLR is better suited for the long ride home, none the less it's a wonderful video, thank you for sharing them!

The DR has served me well. Initially bought to do the TAT, it since has taken me on many adventures and does well enough on the highway too. Those videos are on the channel too. I’m trying my WR250R this summer for similar adventures as l want to try something lighter but the DR is resting in the garage and has been a reliable machine.

Fantastic adventure Joe, I'm glad that you were able to nurse the DR650 back home for fish, chips and a cold IPA. The area around Detroit Lake used to be beautiful, when I left Oregon, it hadn't burned yet and it was a lush and green forest as far as you could see. Great job riding up that rocky section, it looked tough for sure. Looking forward to the next one. Did you have to replace the CDI?
@jrdepew
@jrdepew 11 месяцев назад
Sad stories told me from residents there. The DR ended up needing female terminals replaced to the CDI plug. Several broken internally. No T700 videos on your channel!
@verbalwidget7267
@verbalwidget7267 11 месяцев назад
Yes lots of T700 footage but I haven’t posted in a long time. I need to get organized and get them out. I seem to work and ride. But it has been an amazing year on the bikes. With cooler weather I’ve been in the garage tending to the neglected DR650 from sitting. Going through the carby tomorrow and it should be 100% again ready to ride. I’d like to start riding sections of the AZ BDR soon as time permits. Always great to hear from you. Cheers.

Allow me a suggestion. Add tips on protective equipment and clothing. I'm 70 years old and I recently had a fall on the trail with my Yamaha 250 and fractured a vertebra in my spine because I didn't have adequate protection. Thank you for sharing your travels and experiences.

I have a Honda CRF250L and even that is hard to lift back up. When you are moto camping the arms get tired that makes it a lot harder to lift. A 650 would be a lot heavier. Electrical Gremlins can be a nightmare on modern bikes when you are out in the boonies. What I find that helps is prevention. About once a year and during repair opportunities I undue all plugs and clean them, and especially all grounds. I make sure all components have proper air circulation over them. And above all, I avoid electrical mods. Mods that change the engineered wiring harness can, and usually are, a homeless camp for Gremlins!
@jrdepew
@jrdepew 9 месяцев назад
Your 100%. I eventually found the issue and fixed it. Video on the channel covers it. I’m very reluctant to invest in the modern electronic driven bikes for off road.

If that road had just opened up, you must have been just before me or after me. I think i travelled that road 3 days after it opened in mid-july during a 98 degree heat wave. It's not a section for novices no sir. I agree with your difficulty rating, high end intermediate, low end advanced. As for the Subaru.. I find they just don't understand risk half the time. they could easily slash a tire, put a hole in their oil pan, or bust a control arm and none of them would have a clue what to do but wait for the next guy to come along and fix it.. i've seen it many a times... they just camp on the road until someone else saves them

Great video JR! I'm going to guess maybe terminal tightness issue in that connector end or internal in the cdi. If there is one thing the bush pig is known for, its the rock solid reliability and ease of maintenance. Glad you didn't get banged up on that get off in that rut!! Looking forward to the next one man!
@jrdepew
@jrdepew 11 месяцев назад
Terminal tightness loss due to 3 female pins broken. Not the pigs fault. The Mosko fits partly across the rear of seat and over time compressed the pan into contact with the CDI connector. Stress results.

@@jrdepew 10-4! Glad you got it sorted! Can you space that down or make a little guard for it maybe? Been servicing these bikes for a long time, the DR350, 650, and the XR400 and 650L would be my choice if I didn't want to walk way back out of there!!! I've got over 20k on my old 350 and boy has it been a good one! 15k of those were on a farm nearly!!

Sorry you had to cut the run short but discretion is rhe best answer. We get wisdom along with gray hair! Let us know what the root cause of the electrical issue turns out to be. The only electrical issue I've encountered with my 03 DR in 50k miles was with the sidestand switch but that is not what you have going on based on my experience.
@jrdepew
@jrdepew 11 месяцев назад
It took some trial and error but it boiled down to metal fatigue breaks in the female plug to the CDI caused by seat pan compressed onto the plug from luggage load.
