@@mickstebbings1192 “permitted size for type approval” makes no sense and is not relevant. This is defined as an emergency vehicle as it is being used for firefighting services, therefore it is in the law to use exemptions and blue lights.

@underwaterdick

I'm assuming it's because an aircraft crash may happen off Airport, and the crews are specifically trained in aircraft rescue/fire fighting. If one went down on approach, it would ve beneficial for airport fire crews to attend along with local Appliances.

Why do airport crash trucks need to train on narrow streets in traffic? They spend most of their time on runways and taxiways 5 lanes wide and they don't go anywhere without clearance from the tower.
@Spookyb329
@Spookyb329 2 года назад
Aircraft don't always crash inside the boundaries of the airport. That's why these things are designed to drive through perimeter fences, ditches and hedges (or on the roads) so they can get to a crash quickly. No point helplessly watching a burning aircraft because you've not been trained to drive 500 metres down the public road. (I don't really know anything about them but I would like to think they are allowed to drive outside the airport when needed)
@davesargeant7148
@davesargeant7148 2 года назад
Have you seen the "crash gates" in the perimeter fence of airports? Many people assume that in the event of an "on airport" crash they are opened and the local fire service goes through them into the airport. Quite the opposite. In the event of an "off airport" crash those things, which weigh up to 40 tonnes, come through the gate at high speed to attend the scene. Through being the operative word. They don't trouble themselves to stop and open them, the gates collapse on impact and they are not going to be too fussed about scratching your badly parked vehicle just the other side.
