I don't know who's reading this right now, but this is my dad's favourite song. He's currently in a coma from a severe heart attack. Who ever reads this, please keep him in your prayers. He means so much to me ❤
@@AllAboutRU-vidrs13 I agree wholeheartedly. Go out and buy the best headphones there are, spare no expense, and blast this tune for him. Music can be the best medicine there is
@@AshleySmith19912 I even read one time a Rabbit did the same but I can’t work out how. Maybe the person was a life long Rabbit lover or something. And they’ve helped patients recover from things too by playing etc with them. But this TUNE Could Work Wonders
@@michellealexander-nolin154 Hiya! How are you? Thank you so much for your kind message. Yes he's thankfully still with me, but unfortunately he's been left with so many complications. Very sad but grateful he's alive 😊💜
Strange melody! Stranger lyric! A voice that is the antithesis of rock criteria! It shouldn't work at all, but it does! In spades! As it says.."I couldn't quite explain it!", but there's no doubt that once heard, never forgotten! It gets under your skin! It's haunting! Truly a classic!
I didn't understand the lyrics until now (that is: I understand them now), but I found the melody and the harmonization exceptionally beautiful! Years ago, I learned to play that song on the piano for that reason!
One of the great pop recordings of the era. Known by engineers for how well it was done. Very unusual song structure, topic and chorus and it works. I've always loved this song. Be thankful for what you have and be empathetic of others is what I get out of this song.
@Michael Dollar, OMG!!! I was just having a typing battle with a bunch of knuckleheads that Alanis Morrisette's Jagged Little Pill was probably the best album of the 90's. They kept arguing commercial success & I was TRYING to explain to them it goes beyond commercial success. Like this song, JLP was MASTERFULLY engineered from top to bottom. And IT WAS a commercial success to boot.
@@bonusbaby801 JLP was also one of the first commercially successful albums to be recorded on the Alesis ADAT machine (which was aimed at the prosumer) I think it contributed a sort of mid-range harshness to the sound of the album which made it stand out even more. I love when massive hit albums are produced using less than perfect equipment and procedures and still come out on top. I think in this case the songs were just so good that it wouldn't have mattered if the album was recorded in a shoebox! :D
I am a very eclectic musician and I've heard a lot of music. But this song touches me in a very special way especially when it moves to the chorus with MMMMM in those minor chords it goes right through me. This piece draws attention away from the chorus with the hummimg and gives the listener pause for reflection on what was just said. Extremely effective rhetorical device. The range and inflections of the vocals make it stand out as unique in memory. And the angelic voices in the end is gorgeous. Uniquely creative; I applaud Crash Test Dummies.
It's March 2024, I don't know why I still like this song after all these years and gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it but after reading your analysis, now I understand, thanks (btw, I'm Indonesian so it's kinda hard to understand the real meaning of the lyrics)
If you need to think about what's the moral of the story then i think you haven't experienced much bad things in your life when growing up, so good for you.
holly sheed! The first and only song that can still, by the first notes, tie everything wherever there is ...is always. This song has already united millions of people with its first notes for 20 years. Glory to her and to you. cheer for you!
WHAT A MASTER PIECE!!!! ONE OF THE BEST LYRICS EVER HEARD IN A SONG IN MY LIFE!!! I first heard this song when I went to my senior prom in high school, 1994.
I can relate to the girl, I have two webbed toes on either foot and had a hard time dressing down in gym class because of it and when my classmates found out about it they were very kind to me. I never forgot that.
William I was gonna say if they were mean to you that kids may be mean but people get to accept and understand you through time but I'm glad to hear that I really am. I'm Darren I have cerebral palsy since birth no walk in the park either you get tired a lot lol 😊.
@@erinnelson434 my immediate thought too, but guessing not and sure hes sick of hearing that but I think most people would find it more interesting like that than anything to be cruel to another human about. Guy at my school had near lobster claws with conjoined fingers but everyone was chill
@@onslaughtmma5110 My best friend had an extra toe until middle school when she had it removed. She was always so embarrassed about it. But what I was getting at with the question was because I know one would not be legally allowed to have their toes or fingers webbed if they were trying to become Olympians, so I always wondered if people who were naturally webbed would be allowed. I would have considered myself a professional swimmer if mine were webbed. 😊 But I LOVE swimming.
This song takes me back to my teens in winter rainy days... don’t know why. I’ve always liked the rain and storms so this song just gives me a very pleasant nostalgic feeling.
I'm no music expert, but I believe certain melodies affect the brain in a way that causes an immediate and lasting emotional response. Based on the comments, I think that is what attracts people to this song. Add the lyrics that can be interpreted in a number of ways and you get this.
Just rented the movie "Tag" and I had to re-listen to this awesome awesome song - it just flows!!!! Loved my trips back and forth to Charlotte when this was a hit - radio station 106.5!!!!
I think we all can relate to this song as a kid we all was scared of what other people might think of us if you looked different or had something wrong with you
@@akaxju66er Is worst* than that... It is the "Latent power of the soul" (as described by Watchman Nee in the so called book) *Not that aren't evil and deceitful spiritsits spirits envolved.l
If you wanna have some more fun with it, check out Weird Al Yankovich's rendition. Hilarious, especially if you were around for the topical news references of that point in time.
For some reason, hearing this song always makes me think of Martin Lawrence on SNL. The Crash Test Dummies were the musical guest, but Marty Mar's monologue got him banned from NBC for life! LOLOL. I was working that night, and when I got home, I asked my sister how Martin was, and she was like "I thought he was hilarious, but the people in the audience weren't too amused". LOL. I asked her who the musical guest was, and she was like "some white people singing about car crashes and shit"! LOL. She ONLY listened to black music (R & B, and SOME Hip-Hop) but I listen to everything, and this song is still one of my favorites from the 90's!
Omg. I used to just love this song! I just loved the name of it! "Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm"! My sister shared it with me on FB tonight. I was simply like, "Omg. That song!"
Been trying to find this song for a couple of years off and on Its really hard to find when you dont know the band or song name, and had only ever heard it at work alongside heavy machinery that drowned out every single lyric, i didnt even know that the chorus was just "Mmmm "mmmm". So for a couple of years ive been asking people "hey do you know that song from the early 90s with that guy with the deep voice", of ten theyd ask me to hum it but i cant sing/hum in tune (its in tune in my head) so i'd just make this unrecognisable noise and people would say "uhh no never heard that" and theyd back slowly away from me... So anyway, massive relief now ive found it, not entirely sure i even like it - though i dont hate it, but its nice to finally put this mystery to bed
It sounds like you've never seen Dumb and Dumber, which is how you could have cross referenced to find it. If you haven't seen it, check it out, definitely a classic.
Thornspyre Same here! I heard this song a few years back and the melody was stuck in my head. Unfortunately, I didn't catch the lyrics, I thought I heard "bright lights" (after reading the lyrics it was "bright white") and kept googling those words on and off. I also asked people, tried to hum it for them and even googled things like " top country music songs from the 90s" (not even sure if the genre was country), hoping I would stumble upon it. I'm so glad to chance upon it blaring from the radio today; heard and googled "once there was this girl who" and now I'm here!
underrated song, one of the best. this song has such a sweet ending who agrees I first heard this song when I went to my senior prom in high school, 1994.

Early g.morning all. It's 6.30 am, I'm in bed now schools I'm teaching in are closed for bad weather...warning. I am just relaxing by listening to this masterpiece...
One of those songs that superficially is so stupid it's brilliant. Brad Roberts more or less deliberately gives his voice inflections a "dufus" quality that is sorta of endearing -- but the chord progression and harmonics in the middle and at the end is unique and gives the song a sort of melancholy relevance to what is real life to some people. it ain't *_Everybody Hurts_* (R.E.M.) but it's in that realm.
Whenever asked how are you. It's common for most to say good how are you. It's a courtesy to reply your doing well. No one ever divulges the stresses in there life to those whom there not closest with. Be kind to others.
There’s two ways to take this song: 1. A realization that underprivileged people live a life you couldn’t possibly fathom. 2. Oh…well…pardon me Mr PERFECT!!!
