We visit Ruckersville, VA and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Vehicle Research Center. IIHS is crash testing the 2013 Volvo XC60 in one of their newest tests - the small overlap front test. On this episode of The Downshift, learn why this kind of front overlap impact has such a reputation for killing cars and their passengers, and find out if the Volvo XC60 passes the test.
The Downshift appears every other Tuesday on the new Motor Trend channel.

As a life long volvo fan this brought a tear to my eye. The car my parents drove me home from the hospital in after I was first born was a volvo 360. As was the first car I done any work on, was a volvo 240 turbo (age 3, changed a head light bulb - my Dad told me how to do it and he done the dangerous bits). The first car I drove was a volvo 740 turbo. Next year I will get my driving licence and hope to buy a volvo (unfortunately however after looking at quotes for not only volvo's but various other cars, I've learned insurance companies - for some obscure, sick reason - tend to charge young driver more for a safe car than they would a shitty little death trap. *Cough cough, 1998 vauxhall corsa*). But regardless of cost (even if I have to hold back a year or two), my first car will be a volvo. As will the first car my children will be on, and so on...

My grandma has had only volvos her entire life. she's on her ninth right now and 2 of those 9 have been totaled, from a head on collision and hitting a bull moose in northern NH. both crashes she had only a few scratches and bruises. volvo makes amazing cars and if you care for your safety I highly suggest a Volvo because I believe if she was in any other car it could've turned out very differently.

Very well done. Volvo is probably the only manufacturer that didn't get less than perfect marks in 2013 when the small overlap first came out. Almost everyone either failed or marginally passed, Volvo did it with flying colors on day 1.

I know. It's amazing that they built such a safe vehicle that wasn't redesigned to pass this test. It shows that Volvo thinks ahead. I watched a documentary about Volvo, and apparently they send investigators out to research every crash in which a person died in a Volvo vehicle. That's dedication.

I have a 2010 XC60. It is a superb car. Extremely comfortable, lots of storage space and elegant styling. Very reliable after 4 years of ownership. My other Volvos a previously owned V70 and a current S60 are also very reliable. Volvos are great cars and compared to their German counterparts, a complete bargain in the US. Much cheaper to service too.

Yes, I agree. Volvo's are less expensive to maintain than Jaguars or Mercedes. My very old 760GLE has close to 400,00kms on it and the engine has never had any repairs. I service it once per year, regardless of kms.I had also survived a minor bump with a Kangaroo and sheep with no body damage.

'This was a legal way most of the time it isn't.' Kindly explain how this time 'it's legal'.. whilst most of the time..it's not? Actually the question is not 'is it legal'.?. but 'Is it ethical'.. i.e.- Is it good business practice..when you take the hard work and research and investment time and dollars of one company that are experts in the business and sincere in improving car safety for the sakes of less deaths and serious injuries on the roads and simply buy it all because you're flush with money to improve your own sales figures, and because you have failed miserably at producing safe cars without any concern for the ethos and principles of that company..?? I think this is just 'new money' buying up and benefiting itself for sheer financial gain without doing any of the hard work for it and having invested NOTHING in the company's ethos. Legal..maybe..Ethical..never. Cheap trick really, cheap trick.

We had a 1993 Volvo 850 for awhile, it was almost 20 years old, had 200,000 miles and hadn't been maintained so it ran pretty rough but it was by far the most solidly built car I have ever driven and it handled pretty awesome as well. I'm sure it wasn't as good as these newer Volvos of course but I'm willing to bet it would fair better than some other new cars.

The new Subaru Forester and Volvo XC60 are the only two small overlap tests I've seen out of new small SUVs today where the driver door stays intact and barely bends. Looking at reviews the XC60 is overall a fantastic car and I see now why Volvo has been called the safest brand. They were making small overlap crashes safe for their customers before IIHS made it a mandatory crash test. Even luxury BMW failed. Think we'll be getting out of the CR-V for this one

IIHS's small overlap test, like the one shown in the video, is conducted at 40 mph, according to iihs.org. One thing to keep in mind though, is that in this test, only 25% of the vehicle's front crumple zones must do all the work of absorbing the crash energy. In the majority of other frontal crash tests, at least 40% of the front of the vehicle collides with a crushable barrier. In this test 25% of the front of the vehicle collides with a rigid barrier. This is an extremely challenging test.

This was a very unique video, I like that. Thanks for the inside look. I'm pretty sure the left headlight ceased to exist, it just disintegrated.

The IIHS tests at 40MPH for both the moderate and small overlap tests. The IIHS tests side impacts at 31MPH.

I would have absolute confidence in having a crash in a Volvo. More so than any other manufacturer. Very Impressive.

it's a 2 ton car that survived a small overlap, there were the big cars normally fall apart due to the high weight small surface load. shortly: Excellent work VOLVO!

It's always "YOU are the one that cussed me out" rather than "I am the one that cussed him out first." Like I said - you take after Bill O'Reilly. He does the EXACT same thing. It's ALWAYS everybody else's problem FIRST and HE has nothing to do with it. Papa Bear would be proud of you. He's taught you well. You learned it from the best person you could possibly have gotten that characteristic from. Congratulations! You're Bill Jr.!

That's because NHTSA's 55 mph SOMDB crash test isn't released to the public in the FR yet (to be implemented in 49 CFR 571.200-series.) Note also that IIHS is NOT a federal NCAP requirement, but SOME companies do it on SOME cars anyways irrespective of that. And they work and engineer and develop their car to pass the SORB crash test anyways.

I think they are looking at specific crash results and testings. They might have taken it out so they can see the what the head does in its forward motion upon the impact. In this test, the head rest simply might not be a constant they are considering in this test.

its good to see that volvo's safety mantra isnt all just marketing spin. even after decades of advancements in safety from other car manufacturers it seems volvos are still the safest cars you can buy

At volvo, we have vision 2020. Its not about creating a driverless car, we've already done that with our self drive convoy in spain where the cars connect to each other and effectively 1 driver can drive many cars. Vision 2020 is that no one will die or be seriously injured in a new volvo by 2020. We are working towards systems to prevent the crash altogether in most cases, and minimise the impact every time. The new safety cages and physical measures we have will ensure the occupants safety.

This was a very well done video, just plain excellent! Congratulations Volvo! This has just got to be nerve racking and excruciating for the manufacturers and testers. It is so good that Volvo reps were there taking an interest and working in what appeared to be in a collaborative way.. Good work all!

That is what this test simulates; if two identical cars crashing into each other, each crush zone will dissipate the same amount of energy, so a single car crashing into the barrier is a good model for the test you propose. It has been done elsewhere on RU-vid with identical cars (Daewoos, I think) and there wasn't a lot of difference between the damage to the two-car crash and the damage to a single car barrier impact at the same speed (half the closing speed. Counterintuitive, bit it worked.

Charlie I got tee boned on the left front door and a pillar at about 70k's by another 4wd. it had more damage than my xc60. the front left door opened as normal and no intrusion into the cabin. the other cars door required a bit of effort and looked like it hit a pole ive got another xc60 now.

There is a lot of pre-production computer aided design and testing to see in principal if the structure is sound long before any metal is formed. Vehicles are then tested extensively throughout the prototype stage so by the time a production model is submitted to an independent body for testing the manufacturer knows it's the best it can be for the budget. Using a computer model exclusively would be problematic due to the number of variables, but they do give manufacturers a decent bench mark.

Today, I was turning at a green light and I had a collision with another lady and it was so fast and traumatic and just plain intense but my sister and I were THANK GOD okay (and of course it depends on the situation) we were'nt on the freeway or anything but in the volvo (and it was a S40 so pretty small) I felt like I was protected in a steal tank and only have slight bruise on my chest from the seatbelt.

you make valid points that i overlooked. they need to has a head on test with a wall of sorts that structurally compresses in a way that would mimic that of another vehicle. I also think there should be a crash test that is standard that has to be done at 55 mph.
