Albion 2023 is part of Sydney Bus Museum's fleet. Few drivers today have the experience to use the Albion's 4 speed crash gearbox. This short video is part of the training now availablle for suitable drivers at the Leichhardt shed. 2023 will be part of the Museum's fleet circling Sydney on Australia Day 2015 as part of CARnivale.

Good video. I got to drive a mixed bag of vintage buses when I worked for a small bus and coach company here in the UK a few years back. 2 old hand drivers taught me a couple of tricks....1, with a crash box you can change from first to second without double de clutching, a block change. 2, driving a 1960 Bristol FLF bus I was shown how to float the gears in without the clutch, going up and down the box, as in the video above. To put you in the picture, the company I worked for specialised in vintage bus hire in south London. There were 2 other crash box buses, a Bedford OB and a Guy special ( GS ) . I tried to change on both without double clutching, but they would not have it, lots of crunching noises. Some buses/coaches/lorries you could, some you could not. Seems to me the motors you could change without the clutch were mostly the slow revving Diesels?

Great video will help us as we continue to get to grips with our crash box!

Now that's a skill I wanted to learn. I have a huge enthusiasm for classic cars. My friends think I'm weird for liking pre-WWII cars, or the older pre-WWI cars.

good to see the skill i learned at 20 on AEC Militants. please spread this knowledge to all those attempting to drive vintage vehicles. makes me wince when they grind the gears and blame old vehicles

Lovely smooth double-declutching - beautiful sound from those straight-cut gears and the hefty EN series Albion engine!

Nice video. I passed my manual PCV in a crash geared Leyland Leopard. Hard work bit I appreciated the opportunity to drive them.

Great to hear old Albion engine noise, very similiar to Leylands , very slow revving engine, easy for clutchless gear changing, once u get used to sound of engine.

It is a Pity that they don't teach youngsters who are interested in buses that have there Psv Driving license how to drive these as it would help them a lot.

Lovely clean changes and wonderful engine+gearbox sounds! Have those Sydney Albions got the 9.9-litre engine? I owned a 9.1-litre Venturer from about 1968-70 here in Britain and the engine sound was lighter---reminding me of a big petrol engine. I'd have given anything for a nice clutch-stop the other day, driving a Dennis Loline whose 2nd gear wouldn't engage, so straight from 1st to 3rd with no way of slowing the input shaft. Hate to think what the passengers must have thought of the grunting change. Fine video; many thanks for posting.

Do you recommend trying this on a Manual gearbox bus such as a coach to get the hang of it or what would you suggest.
