“I first discovered Motörhead on an old cassette in 1977,” recalls Tezz of crust/ hardcore punk pioneers Discharge. “I was blown away; I kept playing it over and over. They were, and still are, a massive influence on me. As the drummer in Discharge I was influenced by several drummers, but definitely Philthy ‘Animal’ Taylor inspired me the most with his speed and technique. The band turned the ‘punk scene’ upside down and cleared the way for bands like us.”

For a young'un, you're doing a great job. As an OG UK punk and now OAP (old aging Punk) I love that you're keeping the spirit of the scene alive, and that's important! Loving your videos, reminds me of my youth, albeit a shame history has sought to label it this and that, when in the early 80s it was just punk, Hardcore and Thrash. Keep on burning the flame sir! 👍

I grew up in Ipswich in the '80s which was pretty much the capital for Crust Punk, I hung out with Phil and Pete from ENT and saw bands like Napalm Death, Doom etc in a local club, gigs went on most months with the place filled with crusties, it was a great time for Punk, I was a proud crusty.

Sorry, I don’t have time to wade through the comments to see if someone else stated: but in regards to Skarp, the only update is that their drummer Joe Grindo is still pretty active in the extreme/brutal music scene. He’s been playing with the band Theories for a few years now and helping to organize the annual Northwest Terror Fest. I’ll ask him what came of the other members next time I see him. He’s been in a number of great bands starting back East when he lived in NYC. Great to see other punx being active here in the PNW. First time watcher and I definitely subbed. This genre was very impactful in my growing up and I still hold true many of the philosophies that were maintained by this scene. Like you, I was a young crusty that was very nihilistic in my approach to the world and my place in it. But, when I gave up the train hopping, substance abuse/alcoholism, and the flagrant disregard for myself, I found my taste and mind expanding. Thankfully is wasn’t Jesus Christ (more like Jesus Crust amirite?!) that simmered me down. I still think the same ideas are as relevant now as they have been since the inception of the scene, but I try to work within my community to help make the world at least a little better than I found it. Cheers! Up the punx, and Oi!Oi!Oi!

Oh funny anecdote; I saw Aus-Rotten play back in 99? In Portland at the Paris Theater. There was a big burly skin in the pit causing a bit of a ruckus. Dave stopped the show, hopped into the audience, picked this dude up, carried him in a bear hug, and dumped him on the sidewalk outside. Dave don’t play! Lol

Very cool introduction to the genre!! nicely done. I would just like to add: A very influential band from Japan is "Battle of Disarm". "Mincecore" is a subgenre of Grindcore that has more political/punk lyrics and ethos. Agathocles and Haggus are mincecore bands. The Lead singer of At the Gates is also the lead singer of Disfear, another notable Swedish Crust band. Members of Tragedy were in His Hero Is Gone. Blackened Crust, a fusion of Norwegian Black Metal and Crust punk was coined by the Canadian band ISKRA. Martyrdöd is also well-known Blackened Crust band. Inepsy is the quintessential "Motorcrust" band. Cool bands I like: Detestation, From Ashes Rise, Auktion, Nasum (grindcore), Avskum Great local bands: Dahmer, Saccage, Napalm Raid, Khan, Hard Charger, Sights of War and Soil of Ignorance.

2 years ahead of me at school was Mid (Rob Middleton) who went on to be a member of Deviated Instinct. I never let him know I existed, but I was in awe of him. Snapa (Bass in DI) was also a close friend of some of my mates at school. Gotta say I clicked on this being ready to tear it apart, but dude, you got a lot of it nailed. I will say that on the east coast where I grew up we called bands like Aus Rotten, Nausea and Final Conflict political punk. Sludgier bands were often what we called crust. Well done! Definitely see more punks at the grind shows and that is definitely the genre I've more gravitated towards. I think it's honestly the natural evolution of punks. I pretty much went from regular 77 style punk, to hardcore, to crust, to grind. While I still listen to pretty much everything, grind pretty much dominates my Playlists anymore. In my opinion some of the punk subgenres get boring after a bit and I want something like punk but more technical, faster, and different, and by and large grindcore is probably the most non-music music by today's standards.
@upsidedownnoise

Grindcore and crust came from the same UK Hard-core scene and virtually the same influences in the mid 80's. It was only after the naming of sub genres that they became something other than UKHC.

Crust punk originated in Bristol UK with Disorder, Chaos U.K and the Amebix. Back in the very early 80's, before any of the bands you opened up with were deemed 'crust' (Chumbawumba for example showed up supporting CUK at their second gig outside Leeds, dressed in casual smart clothes in comparison) these three were living in filthy squats and had merged with the 'convoy' traveller scene. Ditto with a few bands from Bath. Most other punks including the anarcho scene were pretty clean cut at the time. The Bristol triumvirate meanwhile having no money, no homes, no work, practically lived on the streets, wearing clothes they tore to pieces from charity stores. I have a glut of pictures from the era showing just how 'medieval' and fucked up Bristol was. On tour these bands would often get stick for 'smell' and looks of disgust as they didn't fit into the punk rock athestic, yet played some of the hardest shit for the time. This eventually began to catch on within the larger scene itself. The word 'crusty' originated in the local Bristol traveller scene, when a Bristol newspaper called them all "crusty travellers." The fascination with drinking and cider within the scene also started there. It's all well and good making these videos, but get your facts right. Edit: Chaos U.K. also took the look and 'smell' to Japan in 85, influencing that scene as well.

Just to say that Chumbawamba members were and still are real anarchists till this day. They started as an Anarcho-Punk group of squatters who formed a band and never sell out, you must search and read more about Chumbawamba mate!! They even said that if you don't have the money to buy their albums to steal, and always made albums extremely cheap to everyone. Take a look of some interviews of them and you'll see that they still the same anarchists as in the beginning.

Another honorable predecessor of Japanese crust is Gai. The very noisy, low-fi, grunted music predicted what would come. And Disclose is huge in that scene for sure. They definitely influenced and played alongside the crasher crust bands, Gloom included. They set the precedent of turning everything on their guitars up to 11 and creating a wall of noise. Crasher crust is a very niche subgenre, but it’s become pretty influential on crust and D beat as of late. Swedish bands like Dropend and Honnor SS play in that style.
